Malcolm Jamal-Warner and Tracee Ellis Ross have been selected for the December 2011 / January 2012 issue of Upscale magazine. The Reed Between the Lines stars talked about their new show, the chemistry they share on screen and their thoughts on their BET sitcom being compared to The Cosby Show.
On their onscreen connection:
Traci: “I didn’t have a picture in my head of who should be my (onscreen husband) and first moment with him was so palpable… doing scenes with Malcolm does not feel like acting. It’s like it just happens, and I think that’s the magic that people long for.”Malcolm: “If you’re going to be joined at the hip, you want it to be with someone who shares the same vision and shares the same kind of integrity and values..it’s probably one of the best non-physical love affairs that I’ve ever had. [...] We have a great rapport and it’s probably one of the best non-physical affairs I’ve ever had.”
On the constant comparisons to The Cosby Show:
Malcolm: “If we could in any way, shape or form hold a candle to what Cosby did, represented and was, then we have succeeded. [...] This is a show that we can all be proud of. None of us is Bill Cosby, we we’re not trying to recreate Cosby. What we are trying to recreate is the universality and the timelessness.” [Source]
i wathced RBTL. The show sucsk. It is BORING.
Huxtables had me interested bc I learned and laughed.
I did like the speech carol(tracee) gave to her older daughter about not changing her hair for other’s opinion of what ia beautiful. But after that I stopped watching.
I want to support the show but I forget bc it isnt must see.
I love looking 2 MJW( he is cut! Regina King is lucky lady)
but he doesnt draw me in the way Bernie Mac nor Heathclifford Huxtable did.
Ok. I thought it was just me. This show is not funny.

Yeah, the show isn’t great…yet! I feel the first seasons usually leave people feeling iffy, but hey, look at Love That Girl. I love it now.

Yes I’am sorry to say ,but this show is not good at all. I think it is the writing of the show. Because you have very good actors on the show,but it sucks.
Don’t really have any interest in watching the show. I think the writing is lacking. I hate to see Malcolm lose the dreadlocks because I thought they were sexy, but this look is nice too. I think Tracee is beautiful but I hate the bangs on her.

don’t have any intrest in the show neither. I can see how it’s boring, usually sitcoms on BET are always boring. Never watched any, but then again-i stopped lookin at BET a very long time ago.

This show is so wack and forced… The episode about the hair… smdh. So fake! This is one black show I don’t mind seeing cancelled.
We need to support shows like Reed Between The Lines. But they just need better writes, like Cosby, Girlfriends, 227, Living Single, The Bernie Mac Show, Family Matters, My Wife and Kids and so on. Tyler Perry sitcoms aren’t that great and they’ve been for about a few years. Maybe we need to start writing letters to BET and tell them how we all feel about this show or any sitcom. I will be buy this magazine though. Tracee and Malcolm look nice.
The show is pretty wack and not at all funny…She’ll always be Joan and he’ll always be Theo…on another note: Malcolm-Jamal Warner is so damn FINE! That brotha has gotten soooo much better with age…he’s always been sexy to me anyways though!

The show is not funny at all, but for some reason I still end up watching it. I guess its cuz nothing else comes on at that time on Tuesday. Still love Tracee’s style though!

The writing needs improvement and they have zero chemistry as an onscreen couple IMO.
I try to watch the show because there’s nothing on at that time and I like the characters. But, it’s not really funny and isn’t a must see. The photos look great.
