♫ Phlo Finister – Shades
Check out the brand new artist Phlo Finister, who apparently started off as a stylist. She is making her first splash onto the scene with her EP, Crown Gold, which is an interesting mixture of hip hop, dub-step with some touches of blues.
♫ Phlo Finister – BANG BANG
Although not much in the way of having a lot of original material, the LA native offers up versions of “Bang Bang,” by Nancy Sinatra, made famous by the Kill Bill film franchise, as well as singing Garbage’s ’90′s hit, “#1 Crush” from the Romeo + Juliet motion picture soundtrack over Tupac’s legendary “Hail Mary.”

Not feeling her, didn’t need to touch Nancy’s song either…not even close to being as good as the original…I do support people chasing a dream tho so do you mama.
Love the Tiara…..not feeling the songs…why are so many urban blogs featuring yt artists? Are there no black musicians that could use the exposure?
@ circ1984: They are doing it,because they want to crossover ASAP. It’s sad because these same artist wouldn’t have been caught dead listening to these artist… Have you heard the word “sellout” mentioned lately…? NO you haven’t, because everyone is doing it to make money! It’s funny how things I was teased about listening to as a kid,is considered “IN” or “Different/cool” Just like now, everyone wants to be considered a “nerd” lol Most people in the industry now days are not passionate about music, they just found a formula to make a lot of money. And the same goes with the listeners…
@ circ1984 I misread your comment… and I couldn’t delete it.
Now my question to you is why not? If it’s good music, why not promote it…? But you would be upset if Rollin Stone and other music magazines didn’t feature black artist… Some blacks listen to white music did you ever consider that?
Hey, I misread her comment just as you did, and I was about to reply with the same answer. I thought she was asking “why do new artists try to validate themselves by sampling and name-dropping artists whom theyd never listen to in real life?”
You know, Im not sayin she invented this, but ever since Amy Winehouse came out and was “different” and claimed to only listen to “old stuff”, everyone wants to be “different”…Again, Im not sayin she invented it. The problem is, that Amy actually DID study Jazz, DOES have street cred, WAS “different” and she had the talent to back it up. Look at Solange for example; she tried to follow that same vintage/nerdy/exclusive/hipster/indie formula, but failed cause people saw right through it. But yes, what I got ridiculed for in Middle school, is “IN” now; Vintage-nerdy boy swag. For me though, I just was never interested in bein what I was told a black kid should look like. Sorry for the essay lol!
** White Artist
are you all assuming that phlo finister is white because she’s light-skinned? because if you can’t look at her and tell that she’s not a white woman, that’s sad.
I’m with you on this one. Never once did I think she was white.
Her sound is just boring to me. Also her picture is not a good one if you are trying to market yourself.
I didn’t say she was white either… I can see she isn’t.
FYI thats Mobb Deep’s Shook Ones shes singing over.
INDEED… I WAS LIKE CL IS MAKING PAC ROLL OVER IN HIS GRAVE
Interesting…different…
I don’t think she is white, just a little lighter in complexion. I like the songs, nice, slow chill music where you catch everything. Seems like something you can drive or study to. I also like her pic, reminds me of old school hip-hop (Biggie/Queen La). I wish her best of luck!
The songs are not bad…..seems like original talent, something different.
Yawn…..the song and video was boring….did anyone else notice that she is wearing upside down cross earrings???
lol.yes.
I really like her “shades” song but the “bang bang” song is a no go it sounds bad but loving the second song.
I like her.
“Although not much in the way of having a lot of original material”….Um, you could have left it with “Although not much…”
The thing is the 3 songs that she did over the hip hop beats are called “Covers” just like JoJo & teyana taylor did Drake covers for marvins room except she was innovative enough to mix old school, new school, rock and rap. The 3 original songs are really hot in my opinion, very old school R&Bish. I love this girl. After downloading her first project Silver Hill & seeing the way she channeled Edie Sedwick and Andy Warhol and doing my research on her GOOGLE resume I fell in love. Can’t wait to hear more!!!
You cant deny this girl her talent. Vocally she is dope and her sound isn’t like anything that is out right now. From what i’ve seen her style is different also.
Experimental w/makeup = epic fail; I can see where you’re trying to go w/it, but you need a good professional to get you started. With that being said, her voice is lovely and unique. I like the 1st song.
ive seen her before, but i never really paid attention to her.
