‘ROUND THE WAY: JAY-Z UNDER FIRE FOR NEW ROCAWEAR SHIRT (UPDATE: SHIRTS HAVE BEEN PULLED)

Jay-Z & Russell Simmons Backstage at Watch the Throne Concert (Nov. 7).

Entrepreneur Jay-Z is catching some heat and backlash for his Occupy Wall Street-inspired t-shirt. When the rapper/businessman popped up backstage at his concert with the tee on, everyone loved the fact that he was supporting the multi-city protest movement.

Well contrary to everyone’s thoughts about the supportive new line of Rocawear clothing, it was announced in an official statement that the rapper/businessman will NOT be donating any portion of his profits to the Occupy Wall Street organization…at least not at this moment:

The ‘Occupy All Streets’ T shirt was created in support of the ‘Occupy Wall Street’ movement. Rocawear strongly encourages all forms of constructive expression, whether it be artistic, political or social. ‘Occupy All Streets’ is our way of reminding people that there is change to be made everywhere, not just on Wall Street. At this time we have not made an official commitment to monetarily support the movement. [Source]

Ironically, New York artist Jason Shelowitz and copywriter @blulaces introduced the motto first while taking part in the Slutwalk protest in Berlin, Germany (VIEW PIC). The crazy thing is the designs are very similar. Perhaps a coincidence?

DO YOU THINK JAY-Z SHOULD SUPPORT THE MOVEMENT MONETARILY?

UPDATE: Looks like Jay-Z and Rocawear pulled the shirt from purchase, because it is no longer available on their website. Get the details on TMZ.COM..

I feel Jay-Z doesn’t have to monetarily support anything that he doesn’t want to. He’s not obligated to give anyone anything.

But he ripped their name and remixed it. Jay would sue anyone who did it to them. He is in the wrong

  2. dada

I don’think that he’s supporting the movement at all, and I do think he’s referring to the rap game by wearing this shirt. I thinking an ego thing maybe….

  3. Mona_Kimora

NO HE AIN’T CUZ DON’T NOBODY GIVE A DAMN.

  4. morning glory

No he won’t and he shouldn’t. Occupy (insert whatever city here)is not looking too good in the eyes of just about everyone.

  5. Cookieforyourthoughts

I like the original protester’s sign best. Interesting inspiration because feminism and mainstream rap are not exactly friends.
The shirt is coo but it probably means many things to many people. If a hustler read this shirt would he think the same as an occupy protester?
…I think it is his decision whether he wants to give money or not.

  6. ONYX!

My grandfather always taught me to be somewhat leary of a gwon man with no facial hair. In the provided picture, Jigga and Russell both look suspect. o_O
I think we all know what the shirt really means…truthfully.

  7. Here I Am

    hahaaa i like!!

wouldn’t wear it out in public but would definitly strunt around the house wit one, yes ma’am.

  8. c'est noir

wouldn’t it be slightly contradictory to support occupy wall street when the entire point of the shirt is to bring a message to (figuratively and/or literally) “occupy all streets” and all injustices. if he donated to just occupy ws other people would complain, etc. oddly, i think this is the safest way to go as long as it isn’t legally unjust (based on copyright or something, etc.)

  9. c'est noir

by “to support occupy wall street” i meant to say give the profit made from the shirts as donations to support occupy wall street.

  10. LW

I think he is in the wrong on this one. I feel that this is exactly the opposite of what this movement is trying to express and the shirt is definitely inspired by the movement (even though I don’t know if he saw the original sign or a sign like the slogan on the Rocawear shirt). He should, at the very least, donate 50% of profits to the movement or give the shirts away for free.

  11. Kerian

Why should the profits go to OWS ? Thats just cray for anyone to think so !

I really loved the shirt however the message I got out of it was ” F OWS ” & support all streets !

I must say I do not agree with the movement ( OWS ), and from what I got out of the shirt neither does Jay.

  12. Wake Up America

Jay Z is wrong.. greedy as always.. i think people need to wake up.. people like him is tthe problem of america… he got enough to not donate the money to people who really need it.. besides he got the idea from others.. it wasnt something he made

    • Generation Programmed!

But per usual..his dumb fans (the GROWN ones and the YOUNG naive ones) will follow his lead. He need to lead them to some damn education….smh

  13. Cali

People really need to research what is OWS before condemning it and Jay taking advantage of something like this and taking shots at it is degrading just as all the MEDIA stations do…degrade OWS and make it seem like a joke…why?

Because the same 1% OWS is fighting owns the dame media and Jays contracts etc.

Wait until the Euro and the Dollar sink ship then talk some more about what OWS is such a joke.

I wish they made fun of Civil Rights movement with T-shirts like this to make light of a serious situation back in the day. We’d still be in the dark. Actually we are still in the dark. OWS is shading light on the runnings of the worldwide system and we have our eyes covered coz we are not ready to face the truth.

Jay is living comfy warmly tacked in is fancy t-shirt while some people are sleeping in the cold streets trying to fight for our economic rights….whatevs

    • nicholeoleoleo

EXACTLY. For those of you who haven’t followed the movement OWS is a peaceful protest against GREED, not CAPITALISM…which are NOT one in the same.

This country was founded on Capitalism (just as much as Freedom of Religion). For us to turn our back on the fundamental system that it was founded on is outrageous, but to stand up to Corruption and Greed is an entirely different thing.

There’s nothing wrong with making money, but making exorbitant amounts of money unfairly and then walking away after the whole system goes to shit is what caused the economic problems that are affecting not only this country, but the global economy.

The same CEO’s who gambled with billions of dollars and lost are the same ones still at the wheel of these major companies. And those that were forced to step down…well they walked away with multi-million dollar bonuses…for what? Being the country’s biggest f*ck ups?

Meanwhile, taxes are increasing left and right, programs are getting cut, jobs are being lost, budgets are being slashed, all because Uncle Sam had to foot the bill for their mistakes. Did anyone stop and wonder why there have been so many more sexual assaults, robberies, and shootings around NYC and Jersey? Because last year the police budget was cut and cops were laid off, because the states (and the country for that matter) are BROKE!

I commend the people of the Occupy Movement for at least standing up and saying that something isn’t right.

    • c'est

the fact that you just compared occupy wall street to the civil rights movement…….

  14. idomind

I see Jay is nestled with one of his sponsors/lovers. I could see that pig wearing lipstick.

  15. Shellbee

What a dumbass! The OWS people are no joke. When they start “occupying” your domiciles and businesses, then you’ll know. Jerk! He should fire the person who came up with this idea. If he came up with it, he should just kill himself. Reprehensible creep!

  17. Kyla

I didn’t even know these Occupy movements were accepting donations ..
He shouldn’t have to donate if he doesn’t want to ..

  18. KERMIT THE FROG

    OCCUPY SESAME STREET!!!

  19. beystan2

Jay aint doing a thing but exploiting the movement. If he really felt for the “little man” he would’ve donated to the Occupy Wall Street cause by showing face. Whatever dude. I’m sure you have many friends on wall street. Hypocrite!

  20. kimwoo

What? Did Jay and his camp here about how bad people where talking bad about him and had his people go on the internet? Now yesterday everyone and they moma was doging him now people are defending him and his shady dealing! He was/is wrong for that. If it wasn’t for the people on doing this occupy wallstreet then he wouldn’t have a t-shirt to sell! He is riding the backs of poor people and people with a cause and that’s a shame.

  21. Gloria

Martial law is coming people.WAKE UP. That is what Gay-Z’s shirt is referring to. His clothing line is called Rocawear….like the Rockafellers…the big banker family who also run wall street. He is apart of their team. Why do you guys think some of these talentless celebs blow up? These billionaires are behind the scenes pulling many strings. You guys need to REALLY start doing your research on this stuff. You people don’t find it suspect that these bank bailouts are happing all over the globe?? Start researching this stuff and you will find out that everything you knew will now change. It’s scary but I highly suggest it. There are plenty of books and web sites to get info.

  22. katie

Really Jay-Z?! You wrong for this one.

  23. Jenifer

Jzy-Z is what Occupy Wall Street is all about – He is the 1% capatalizing off the 99%. A lot of these comments are so damn dumb. Watch a damn news channel to find out what OWS is all about. At the very least he could have donated some food or tents, something, damn! With his ugly big-lipped @ss.

  24. KB

I was under the impression that Jay didn’t even own Rocawear anymore…I thought he sold it a while ago.

  25. Rae

They just mad they didnt think of it 1st.

  26. Swingpin

Jay-Z has nothing to do with Rocawear anymore…havent in years, they pay him a yarly fee for him to act like he still owns it tho…for the publicity it gets

  27. NIKKI

WOW… SOME OF YOU ARE TAKING THIS SO PERSONAL. DOES JAY OWE YOU MONEY? WILL THIS MONEY GO IN YOUR BANK ACCOUNTS? IT’S ONE THING TO BE SUPPORTIVE OF THE CAUSE, BUT TO SAY SOMEONE NEEDS TO KILL THEMSELVES OVER A SHIRT…CHILD PLEASE. IT SHOULD BE HIS CHOICE TO GIVE OR NOT TO GIVE.

  28. DoWop

I am too through w/this one. I have gotten over the fact that silly people think that he nor his wife can do any wrong, but now some are actually defending him. You have people trying to educate y’all ignorant behinds and you all still saying the dumbest crap!!! Get it 2gether people!!!

  29. Chris

I think Jay-Z is right for making a shirt that reflects a movement. If he wants to me more money, why should we stop him?
