In an interview with The 700 Club, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice revealed to co-host Kristi Watts that macaroni and cheese was the one thing she has to have at Thanksgiving. After viewing the clip, host Pat Robertson asked, “What is this mac and cheese? Is that a black thing?”
Watts replied:
“It is a black thing Pat. Listen: and you guys, other people, the world needs to get on board with macaroni and cheese,” said Watts. “Christmas and Thanksgiving — we have to have macaroni and cheese, and it trips me out that you don’t.”
Robertson admitted, “I really don’t, I don’t, and I have never.” Pat, you really don’t know what you’re missing!

Mac and cheese is not a black thing…Kraft mac n cheese is popular and mac n cheese is on most kids menus. Blacks have more baked mac n chees in a custard style and white folk like that blended melted cheese and bread crumb topping mostly. But both races like it much the same. But I did see mostly black people in the cheese aisle at the stores, bet it was for mac n cheese more than another casserole dish. Mac and cheese is american, end of story. I made it for a potluck yesterday, and everyone there (mostly white) was CHOWING DOWN ON IT! It’s made in all sorts of ways, but its something that crosses all boundaries. Heck, the whitest yuppy lounge i know in philly, has an entire portion of their menu devoted to the stuff!

I agree with the posters who said that mac & cheese is an all American food because it is. It’s not black or white – it crosses those racial boundaries as the quintessintial comfort/holiday food. However, its preparation has regional differences. Some people make a cheese sauce on top of the stove using eggs, butter and milk, while others mix everything in a large bowl and pour into a pan to bake. People use a huge variety of cheeses, and some even put lobster and bacon in their mac & cheese. Pat Robertson is a race baiter, period. He brings up race to try to get a rise out of people. There was no need to ask if mac & cheese is a “black thing” when it’s clearly not.

@Tysheen, my thoughts exactly. If you look at Thanksgiving menues targeted at Whites, the main starches are mashed potatoes and “stuffing”. Their take on macaroni and cheese is the boxed variety.
