Rapper Nicki Minaj, singer/songwriter Usher, pop superstar Lady Gaga and actress Taraji P. Henson were among the many celebs that appeared onstage during The GRAMMY Nominations Concert Live! at Nokia Theatre on Wednesday (November 30) in Los Angeles, California.

I am surprisingly not as pissed off about the nods as I usually am. There are still the usual fuck ups, most noteably being Rihanna for album of the year. That was way out of left field. That was a decent pop album, but I couldn’t call almost every track on that disk stellar. If we were to look ahead to 2013, I could see her possibly getting a nod for that category for Talk That Talk, cause that is her best album since GGGB, but not Loud. I think every one of Bruno’s nods is deserving except for Album of the Year, because parts of that album lagged. The singles he put out were nice, but everything else was quite boring, but I always said by his second album, he should be in that realm. Nicki is NOT a new artist, nor should she be in there flr Best Rap Album. I cannot wait until Missy comes back from sick leave to really annialate this chick, because she technically is not even a so-called rapper anymore, more like a rapper-turned popstar that raps on occasion. All of the Lights could have been ommited from Song of the Year and given to Pitbull or Maroon 5. Not a huge Pitbull fan, but it is kinnda bogus how he and Neyo dominated the majority of the Spring and Summer with Give Me Everything, and he winds up with zip. But maybe if there wasn’t the absence of male and female separate categories, that would be different. Apparently the presitigious Recording Academy really thinks they are doing the right thing, but in turn they continue to cripple recognition of musical talent each year. But despite all that, I have never seen an R&B field that looked so pure of true R&B talent, at least not since the early 2000s. I can’t hate on that one. Almost everyone in there barely even scraped the Billboard Charts this year, but I think their labels fought reallu hard for em.’
The Grammy’s aren’t just supposed to be based on songs that were summer jams for teenage girls and club goers.. lol. If that were the case, Lil Jon and the Eastside Boyz, Waka Flocka and Juvenile would be record breaking Grammy Award winners. They’re based on the quality and merit of the music. And if you think that even nominating (let alone allowing them to win) Pitbull and Ne-Yo for “Give Me Everything” isn’t crippling the recognition of musical talent, then I don’t know what is :l

Never said I liked Give Me Everything, but the song was popular, which is why I stated that. The way you guys are reacting is the same way I felt when Single Ladies was nominated and won for Song of the Year 2010. Single Ladies?! Song of the Year?! That was horrible. You can’t tell me that song’s lyrics were so good to have been given that award, compared to everyone else in that category.
In response to Ben, I actually didn’t say that the Grammys were solely based on merit and quality (even though quality is subjective) at all. I said that they “aren’t ‘just’ supposed to be songs that were summer jams” which isn’t at all the same as what you suggested. And in response to your second statement- I didn’t say any category that they would be in? Lyric wise, Single Ladies vs. Maxwell’s Pretty Wings and Kings of Leon’s Use Somebody? You seriously think the Recording Academy thought Single Ladies had more meaning over those songs? No, that was pop fad, this is my point.

Incorrect…they actually give you a disclaimer in the credits that say what the awards are based on…Which is “Critical acclaim” and album sales….which ironically can go hand in hand…in short…its all a popularity contest…It has nothing to do with “Quality or Merit”….and more to do with popularity, spins and sales…

FINALLY Usher is singing! I’m so sick of him (and other talented R&B/pop stars) selling out to the masses with this David Guetta-influenced trance/techno/fake house (I’m from the Chi so this mess IS NOT HOUSE)crap. It bugs me because he can actually sing without the auto-tune and other tricks. Leave that garbage for the “artists” with no real singing ability like JLo or somebody. If he would release an album covering standards or just showcasing his voice, I’d buy it. Grown singers pandering to the kids who don’t really know good music (not totally their fault but…)is why I can barely tolerate radio. They need to stop making music that sounds like the Mario Brothers/Sonic the Hedgehog (showing my age I know) and put their hearts back into the art.
