Phlo Finister premieres the new video for her single, “Shades,” from her Crown Gold EP (download/listen). The LA native is clearly channeling a beloved favorite in the new video, however, we’ll let you be the judge on whether she pulled it off or not!

This is giving me straight up circa 1997 Aaliyah Teas!!! Good job but no one can replace babygirl!
THIS VIDEO IS REALLY DISRESPECTFUL TO AALIYAH AND HER FAMILY that somebody would do this to try to make money by using somebody else style. i am disgusted
@RoshawnBruse you sounds extremely stupid!!!!! Many artist are inspired by many who are here and who are gone, evidently she paying homage
IT IS DISRESPECTFUL TO AALIYAH. SHE’S CLEARLY TRYING TO PUT YOU IN THE MIND OF MY BABY DOWN TO THE TOMMY HILFIGER! I DON’T KNOW WHAT’S MORE DISRESPECTFUL:
1. THOSE SILLY LOOKING EYEBROWS!
2. HER GRABBING HER CROTCH!
3. ROLLING UP A BLUNT! (NOT SAYING AALIYAH NEVER SMOKED WITH DAME DASH BEFORE?)
4.SMOKING NEWPORTS LOOKING LIKE TRASH!……………….THE SONG IS OK THOUGH, I JUST HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE VIDEO!
#AALIYAH’S #1 FAN!
@REDCHAINSAW……THIS ISN’T CALLED PAYING HOMAGE! LOL!!
@mack i agreee completely with everything you just said it is DISRESPECTFUL end off
#homage my ass
actually, it is an ode to AAliyah!!! If you follow her, she is different in all of her videos. Let’s not made stupid remarks you all..
I was gonna write the same thing but since you did why recreate a good thing! lol. This chick is outta line! Keri did the same thing on Pretty Girl Rock but you could see she was paying homage to the past girl groups. You know since she died we’ve been down on Ciara, Ashanti and the rest, saying that they were trying to replace Aaliyah. However this chick is straight up trying to jack her fame! She does not pull it off. What is she missing to even match Aaliyah? The sexy cocoa skin, sex appeal that will make a gay go straight, the aura of both a lady and a street chick, the beauty, the moves, the versatility and the vocals. I’m sure she did this to create a controversy and for her to say that she has a lot of haters etc… We don’t about you that much, but I will gladly give it to you on behalf of Aaliyah!
@Jevon :- preach there no way anyone can stick up for this stupid act
THIS IS A HOT MESS. why would she do that? its not good… nor is the song dope. and her music dosnt reflect Aaliyah AT all.. so don’t try to defend that shit..?!!!
If you’re gonna do Aaliyah why isn’t there a dance sequence? This girl probably don’t have any dancing abilities. I’m sick of people doing things half way. And that weak belly roll? Chile Please! The song isn’t bad, but I’m feeling some kind of way about this video..
I actually like this….
errr yh she defo using Aaliyah style .. to bad she can’t sing like her she sound rank .. no one will ever be abel to pull it all off like Aaliyah she is and always will be an icon .. end off
Disrespectful? Wow I think you overreacting with that statement. I believe she was trying to pay respect and homage to maybe her idol, but it failed. The song is trash, she is not cute (I’m bias because Aaliyah was gorgeous), and I just wasted 3 mins of my life. Try again!
ONLY SEEN TIL 1:44 SO FAR AND LIKE AALIYAH WOULD SAY “TRY AGAIN”!! MY BABY’S EYEBROWS NEVER LOOKED LIKE THAT! LET IT GO…NO MOVIE, NEVER BE ANOTHER. IT’S OK TO BE INSPIRED, BUT WTH IS THIS???!! #AALIYAH’S #1 FAN!
I have mixed feelings….because the song is actually not that bad at all. I actually like the song.
But its kinda erie how much she paid “tribute” to Aaliyah….it was too much.
But otherwise I would have never listened to the song….so I guess, good job??? LOL.
And the synth sound in the song reminds me of Aaliyah’s “Don’t Know What To Tell You”…especially towards the end….lol.
I thought the same thing…Good ear.
i give her credit cause she tried but it just doesn’t
feel like the Aaliyah that everyone loved so much.
what the F**k? when did it become okay to do this shit? bitch betta fall the F**k back. Ugh thoroughly disgusted. just no respect. Who’s supposed to be impressed by this?
Fail! It just seems cheesy, like she is not paying homage but impersonating her, almost like a parody. Its one thing to pay homage, but to me, she looks silly trying to rock the Aaliyah style get up. Its just not working.
I think it’s unfair to compare her to Aaliyah in the article and then have people vote if she s doing it good enough… Why judge her for who the blog author claims shes channeling and not just for the girls own music and own vibe. No one will ever say that someone does Aaliyah better than Aaliyah, and it’s because it’s impossible, but this girl is talented and should have a chance to do her own thing before getting pinned down as a con artist before she even breaks. This blog post was in poor form.
i disagree. she is clearly doing it on purpose! why else would someone be rocking ‘Tommy Hilfiger’ in 2011-12?! she’s asking for it!
She opened that gate when she dressed as Aaliyah for the whole video. We are simply asking our readers if she pulled it off.
She is clearly referencing an earlier era, but just fashion wise… Cant a talented light-skinned sing over hip-hop beats and not have to deal with this Aaliyah comparison? I’m sorry, I just think it’s incredibly unfair to the artist for a music journalist to make these claims before the reader even has a chance to make their own opinion. Anyone watching this has no choice but to only think “Aaliayh bter” the second they start the video… kinda wack…
The comments would’ve been worse if CL didn’t mention Aaliyah. Everyone would then comment saying she’s biting Aaliyah’s style and wondering who she thinks she is etc..
CL did her a favour.
She is being compared to Aaliyah because she is “clearly” comparing herself to Aaliyah by channeling her in the video and dressing in the style of clothing that Aaliyah wore. We know Aaliyah didn’t invent this style but her style of dress is well known and has become familiar just as Michael Jackson’s style of clothing has, so she wasn’t just channeling a style from a earlier era but a distinct style of a certain artist (Aaliyah). If she just showcased her individual self, with her own personal style then we would not be comparing her to Aaliyah, we would judge her based off of her own unique style and music. Even if the journalist did not mention the Aaliyah reference, anyone who has been a fan of Aaliyah would clearly see that she is in some way channeling her.
@AJ….plz go look up some of Keisha Chante’s videos on youtube. now this is a artist who is being herself but gets hundreds of Aaliyah comparisons in the comments. that’s completely different than what this young lady is doing right here! like i said the song is pretty good, but the video??
@AJ lol poor thing you MUST not know about Aaliyah, she was the FACE of Tommy Hilfiger and wore this EXACT SAME outfit everything down to the boxers showing, honey that is NOT coincedeince lol
Obviously this is intentional. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that AJ.
As an AVID Aaliyah fan (judge by the name) The blog did do this young lady a favor by pointing it out other wise she would’ve gotten ripped to shreds for doing this without someone softening the blow. I remember Aaliyah rocking this style from back in 1997 and if I saw this without someone mentioning that she was “channeling it”, I would have had a thing or two to say about it.
I thought it was cool….I like the song but next time get the part of the hair right…lol
THE HAIR AND THE EYEBROWS WERE WRONG! SMH………..
All this did was make me miss the real Aaliyah…, the reality is Phlo is probably just a mega fan who doesn’t realize that the amount to which she’s inspired by her idol has descended into imitation. I’m a singer and I was massively inspired by Aaliyah but the greatest thing I take from that is to ba as much myself as Aaliyah was herself. IMO that’s the best way to pay homage to someone so original, be the best you instead.
well said!
Nah,……she looks more like Marilyn Manson than Aaliyah!!
LOL!
hahahahaha dead!!!!
Wow, that’s messed up SMH
YESS!!!
The song is straight, actually kinda catchy. I’m not feeling the video. I don’t really mind the Aaliyah homage, but the direction of the video could’ve been a lot better. It just looks kinda cheap, from the camera they used, to the framing, editing, all that. Kreayshawn didn’t have a crazy budget but she worked with what she had for the Gucci Gucci video and it was a dope video. She should redo the video and execute the Aaliyah scenes better.
I thought the same thing- the concept of the video had potential, but it looked rather cheap and amateur. The wardrobe was lacking too. I’m a huge Aaliyah fan and while the Tommy outfit does make you immediately think “Aaliyah”, at the same time it’s lacking something. Aaliyah was really great at accessorizing and layering jewelry. And her shade game was sick, so Phlo lost some points there. She tried though, I’m definitely feeling where she was coming from, but this seems more like a “I did this for fun” video and nothing more.
I like the song, but who told her to imitate Aaliyah? She lost cool points there and it wasn’t even close to being Aaliyah anyway. Why can’t people be original and come up with their own style? It’s a shame because the song isn’t bad, but the video is just wack.
AALIYAH MAY BE OFTEN IMITATED, BUT NEVER DUPLICATED AT ALL
who she think she is? this is a horrible video. if rebecca black had a light skin doppleganger with more swag this would be it.
awful. not disrespectful to babygirl, but just lame. she looks sick.
her face is atrocious. she looks like she may be fighting a sexually transmitted terminal illness
This girl looks better than Aaliyah, the song was cute and the video was decent.
your cray
you really need reading glasses. SMH. Sorry this song was horrible!!!
LMAO!!!
lets be real. this artist doesn’t have the ‘IT’ factor. nice try honey. but you simply do not possess the natural talent or beauty aahliyah had.
read her tweets? she is just some hood chick playing dress up like its holloween. lets make a shitty video and apply it to the masses. like we need more of those out of there. i can’t even bring up aahliyah they are not even on the same level. this artist got our attention alright, what a waste.
Terrible video, even worse song.
What happened to just being yourself? And this ‘homage’ sucked.
Okay….so I went to listened to her EP. Its not bad.
wheres the option for “dont even try”?
didnt even finish the video. It sucked and wasnt interested in the song.If youre going to pay homage to someone who had such a clean image, how about try for a little cleaner video?
I hated this video. Point, blank, period.
Aaliyah & this bird should never be brought up again in the same sentence. EVER!!
No one’s original anymore. And if this is the future of music, then I fear the worst. Because shxt’s looking quite GRIM. -_-
People’s selective amnesia is ANNOYING! When Aaliyah was alive all you heard was that she couldn’t sing, but now that she’s dead all of a sudden her her voice is something not to be duplicated? STOP IT! The needless hate is making your people look like simple assholes.
You said it best !!
No one use to say her voice was bad. With ballads like “The One I Gave My Heart Too” why would anyone lie saying she couldn’t sing? I’m 28 and never did I hear people on the radios claim she couldn’t sing.
I’m confused.. Is this a Spoof ?
Yeah I thought so too in the begining, it must be the amature quality of the video.
So cliche throwin’ shade on “shades” but…ummmm…SMH this video is all crazy types of I CAN’T and tell me why’s? I loved Aaliyah too. It just hurts my stomach 2 watch this. Sad part is, I fux wit the song! She should go back to te drawing board and make a different video. It would be far better received than this unflattering attempt.
I usually try to balance the good and the bad but right now I’m smh at this garbage. Just look at the cover of it, this little girl even looks demonic. Aaliyah made some snappy decisions like the movie “Queen of the damned” but she never looked this demonic, and always kept a sense of creativeness within her. This video is just disrespectful and evil. Look at this chick’s face under the shades, something is not adding up. If you can’t be a good singer without channeling someone else’s spirit, and have a sense of originality then you need to sit down because clearly you were not made to be an artist. No-one needs to get paid for being an impersonator!!
These comments are hilarious. Damn it wasn’t that bad lol! It’s nice she paid homage to Aaliyah. She got the hair and the outfit right but she doesn’t have the presence and swagger that Aaliyah did.
I see Concrete Loop DELETED my comment about them not having the scoop on Kobe & Vanessa divorcing last night. Yall still late! lol it’s ok…yall have other strengths.
I am trying to figure out how they shot this video? They had to have a laptop with a webcam on it. The song is alright, but the shitacular video took it down a few notches.
LMAO
i think shes is showing you in the video how much she is inspried by aaliyah bc its clear from the hair, to the tommy hillfigure, even to whe she was in the car that that was aaliyahs MO, its not a secret, so i feel like shes showing thats where she gets her influence or thats the kind of vibe she wants you to get from her song and the video
if she had 1 or 2 scenes then COOL, but the whole video? it does after a while put one in the mind set of “ok, who do you think you are?” but do i think she MEANT disrespect…..no, i do think she really is just inspired by Aaaliyah completely, and theres nothing wrong with that
The video & song was OK. She had the “Aaliyah” imitation right, she just didn’t execute it well. Her eyebrows could have been a little thinner.
That was so weak. She does not have the swag to pull off Aaliyah. You don’t have to rock the exact same outfit to pay tribute. It really came off as a girl playing dress up and has no idea what she is doing. And girl u cannot hide behind those tired ass vocals. No originality and talent judging by the video.
Let’s be Honest.. First of all She has Talent & second of all if any of these weirdo Aaliyah stands had common sense they would just Google: Phlo Finister. She has her own style & dope one at that. The girl dresses Mod as if shes from the 60s. Her first EP that dropped earlier this year SILVER HILL was inspired by Andy Warhol & Edie sedwick, for the girl to only be 20 and have been in the game since she was 16 (google her) styling, singing, modeling she definitley has experience and has done her homework because her creativity is on another level. I love Aaliyah too, but people are too thirsty for her. Shes Dead, no one wants to be her, take the music she left behind, listen, remember & shut the hell up.
People want to talk about “No Originality” what other artist has done anything like what shes doing in the past decade?!? I’ll Wait….
I can see where she was going with this…Kind of got the vibe like the song was suppose to be sort of laid-back & easy going like Aaliyah’s “Back & Forth”, the same with her look…only difference is that Aaliyah was just natural in her singing & with her performance. The girl in this video was trying too hard to duplicate that same natural vibe. On a lighter note, I’m glad to see some1 try & still keep Aaliyah’s influence relevant rather than try to be a carbon copy of Beyonce & Nicki.
I know they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but-no, in this case it isn’t.
Ok….Ewwwww.
She’s clearly paying homage… Some of these cooments are as if she’s saying she’s the originator of that style or sutn lol… I guess she should’ve put a disclaimer at the beginning -__- lol… I think what she did was cool… I actually like the video… some ppul need to lighten up lol
Facebook.com/hfans
the sad thing is if i heard the song without the video i think i would like it.. its a differnt beat its cool ..catchy.. but seeing the video makes me hate her lol u dont do “aaliyah” deffenitly if your a “new” artist
I will just say its time for people to come up with there own style on how they want people to look or judge them. not use somebody that has succeeded her dream. i mean if she wanted to pay homage she could have just did a song and not a video it would have been smart. then people wont judge.
Well when Ciara came out everyone claimed she bit off Aaliyah. And when Keysha Cole came out everyone said she reminded them of Mary J. People will make comparisions no matter what. Also artists bite off each other and use ideas that have already been done. It’s called “inspiration” lol. Maybe this artist was inspired by Aaliyah. Ain’t nobody out now that can do it like she did. Maybe artists need to copy Aaliyah so music won’t suck so badly. Maybe we need that 90′s inspired vibe to kick in cuz everything sucks and is overproduced. With this particular artist I give her props for remembering someone that had such an impact on the music industry. And didn’t try to oversing like Beyonce or do that monotone shit like Rhianna.
I am not feeling the video at all. it was alright.
the song is cute and catchy
i thought for a moment was that Aaliyah but i did a dble look lol
Follw me on Twitter @DaRealRastaBwoi and check out my videos and subscribe
http://youtu.be/L82KS3JP_hk
My thing is if your going to pay homage, make sure you do it right, and she didnt do it right, not hating u just didnt get that vibe
I actually like the song but are a few things off about this video, almost to the point where i feel she was set up!. She doesnt sing her lyrics at all in the song..(what is she mumbling in the car when they’re driving?)the song gives me a dark undertone…but most of the video is done during the day..there is no bedroom/intimate scene as indicated in the lyrics..the theme of the video and song dont match..there is no dance sequence..and the tommy hilfiger (or however u spell the name) was too long…this video is missing styling, artistic direction, and a choreographer…im working on my own music and i would never put out a video like this..its sad cuz i actually like her =/
not only was she trying to look like her, clearly she is TRYING to sound like her as well.
I think she has pretty good vocals. The song was catchy and rhythmic; her falsetto sounded similar to Aaliyah’s on some parts. I liked the vibe.
People, it is clear she wasn’t trying to IMPERSONATE Aaliyah; she was trying to exhibit Aaliyah’s influence in her music.
She’s cute. Video was sub-par.
She tried but never quite like ms one in a million herself Aaliyah. Kudos for her giving it a try, now I must say the song is dope I like it!
I like the song..the video ehhh hit or miss. I can respect that she wanted to pay tribute. It’s because she tried to go DEAD ON is what has people up in arms.
Watched it again, and even though she is dressed as Aaliyah, she reminds me more of “Lynn” from “Girlfriends” lolol. Especially in the black outfit.
I’ma be nice & say that I hope Aaliyah is watching this from heaven & smiling down knowing that we still think of her as one of the best that ever did it.
That is all.
(SMILE) I’M SURE SHE IS!!
