Almost one year after its launch, Oprah Winfrey‘s OWN Network hasn’t exactly blown up as expected. The former talk-show hosts’ channel has introduced various shows like Oprah Presents: Master Class, The Rosie Show, Oprah’s Life Class and her BFF’s show, The Gayle King Show, with some reality shows in the mix.
Interesting enough, one of the newest shows, Welcome to Sweetie Pie’s has been doing the best when it comes to television views. The highest number of people viewing the show in one night was 418,000, with an average viewership of 216,000. And because of this, the OWN network is looking to possibly cater their programming and advertising more to the network’s African-American followers:
“Anytime you have a program that pops like Sweetie Pie’s did, you start looking at what drove it,” Logan tells Adweek. “And we saw that the African-American audience really had a connection with that show. . . . We’re going to look at ways to nurture and grow that.”
“We’re not going to sell out and just chase one demographic or segment,” he said. “We’re going to nurture the success we had with Sweetie Pies. . . . [But] it is our job to strike a balance. The Oprah brand is not niche. The Oprah brand is very broad. How we translate that to the screen is the challenge we have.”[Source]
Many reports take this as the OWN network heading in the direction of becoming a “black TV network”. If Oprah began including more African-American programming and/or becoming a higher quality black TV network, would you watch her network more?
Oh now she needs african americans…I watched the channel a couple of times and all I see is white shows and Gayle’s talk show. It was not that interesting, but I do think it’s interesting that she said she will now focus on her on culture. Hell she should have “saved the soaps” and aired them on her network her ratings would have been much better.

That is why black folk will stay losing because we are so focused on just blacks. Look at how just black treat each other in black neighborhoods- shooting and fighting every day, life expectancy all low from dealing with each other. The only way to move from the back of the bus or from the black lunch table is to assimilate with other races by having mass appeal. If her network turned into another BET, it will surely fail, it would offend everybody else that dont understand or like the ebonics black culture including a portion of other blacks. And I am glad her representative commented that they are not going to sell out and just chase one demographic or segment. Its just an assumption that its just blacks that watch the show. What are the ratings of her other black show: “Pink Pastry” if blacks are all about supporting each other. Content and relatability has more to do with it. Dont watch her network then, by doing so you will watch another network that only think about you when they want to expose the stereotypes, pea brain cant figure that out. And she cant just become a sesspool of failed black shows from other networks either, she still have to consider the business end. Jada might not want to do Hawthorne anymore. Oprah goal is to be compared to maybe NBC or CBS or CW and those networks did not get to where they are catering to just blacks. Oprah is trying to be a network to contend with and that is what will help blacks in general because the other networks will take note and follow suit. She has drive to pull up a chair to teh big dog network table, not mediocrity. Funny how yall forgot she got a black woman to help head her network in the beginning and she supported our Black President to the risk of her ratings, opened a black school in Africa, etc before OWN was ever made, so dont go acting like she excluded blacks. Freakin Ingrates.
Honestly, Sweetie Pies and Lifeclass (the live ones with Iyanla) are the only shows I watch on OWN. I might tune in more if the focus was more AA oriented.
I love oprahs channel actually. well i love the season 25 behind the scenes, i really love sweetie pies, its not an ignorant show, it well edited and their all so lovable. master class is very intresting, i love to get into the minds of a master in his or her element. gives you a broader appreciation for what it is they do. and life class was great as well. im still preaching and applying those lessons. She could add more black shows, me and my friends would be great at it oprah. get our ” veiw ” on. call me! I also look forward to her newest show, but other than that, i could care less about anything else on that channel.
uhh ill be honest and say her network is Boring and illyana program is the only thing worth watching…the reality show is not do good as many are reporting….YAWN, her netwrk is just so BLAH like a stroll through the mall on a boring afternoon
Every black person that gets in financial or media trouble wants to run back to the black community for support. Oprah left black women a long time ago and bashed black men and hung them out to dry. Now she wants to black community to save her network. Hell nall. After you gave them white folk all sorts of TV shows and free cars and houses. Then on her favorite things shows, she never promoted any black businesses.

How many black businesses applied for favorite things? I will never support another black business because of ghetto cutomer service. The black clerks almost always have an attitude, folk show up late, half azz around and still expect to get paid, and the black clerks are most helpful to non blacks customers. These are from black businesses I DID support. Most black people should have got a ticket to her show instead of going to the chicken wing shack, and you would have gotten cars, etc.

Why is Oprah being criticized for her criticism of black men/rappers? Black men were portraying black women as objects, cattle in their songs and videos. Those black rappers did not care about the image of black women as a whole. Half of them not even married to black women so they don’t care about you, just using your black shaky azz for bucks, don’t really like you. Dont care how many charity events they hold to make them look good. I am glad she used her show as a platform to call it out because it has affected how black women are viewed to this day. Black rappers negative descriptors toward black women threw us under the bus. Oprah wasn’t the only one complaining, wasn’t there forums on BET about these lyrics and how it also glorifies violence. Spellman burned Nelly’s CD’s and what about Bill Cosby. When it boils down to it, the rappers don’t care about you, you not fit to marry them only to slum with and babymommafy, so you better care about yourself and complain and stop buying their gutter mess. Glad she called it out, it was disgusting then and now.
Maybe the black businesses shouldn’t let her in the store like Hermes did… That would be wonderful customer service. She made it a point to come back and spend that $10,000 because she is OPRAH! lol

If you dont support Oprah’s network, you will end up supporting other networks that dont support blacks anyway by default. I already watch her network a lot. I actually watch her show everyday. The problem with it is that she just doesn’t have a lot of shows. They show the same ish over and over an over again. It would be smart to target an african-american demographic but all-in-all she just needs more shows on the network. Period. I like Master Class, Visionaries, the show with Lisa Ling and I love Mystery Diagnosis. Bottom line she just needs more programming.

I loved Oprah for years and would argue with anyone that said anything bad about her… But earlier this year, I saw who she really was. She has no interest in black viewers problems… And while she was at ch 7,she could careless about black viewers period! Don’t believe the hype, Oprah isn’t getting that white love and now she wants to come home. This always happens when a black person forgets who they are… She has no love for blacks, and a real wise person would be able to see this, it took me 25 yrs to see the real deal. I don’t watch the channel.
