VIDEO: TREY SONGZ WANTS YOU TO KNOW THAT HE IS YOUNG R&B

December 15th, 2011

Over the last month, Trey Songz has dropped 2 mixtapes (Anticipation 2 and #Lemmeholdthatbeat2) and an EP (Inevitable). With his next studio album, Chapter 5 due next year, the R&B singer sat down with ThisRNB.com and talked about the most memorable moments of his career and the importance of evolving and growing as an artist. Songz also made sure to let the world know where he believes he stands in comparison to other singers in his genre:

———

“I don’t know if I can say this without sounding like I love myself to death, but I think I’m the cornerstone in young R&B. And I think, especially within the last month, I’ve made it evident that I plan to be that. And what I think I’ve also given myself the opportunity to do with putting so much R&B into the marketplace, I think I’ve given myself the opportunity to grow…If I don’t grow I die.”

———

Hmm… What do you all think? We already know what R. Kelly thinks about Mr. Songz (VIEW POST). Who agrees w/ Trey?

I agree if he changes his statement to “I’m the cornerstone of YOUNG (MALE) R&B excluding Bruno Mars, Miguel, Frank Ocean, and Chris Brown and sometimes Lloyd” then ok…You got it Trey!

Can this man even sing ? he spends so much time rapping I can’t tell. And when he does sing, he sings in the same monotone strained pitch, no key changes or anything.Everything eh “sings” sounds the same. He comes from the Nate Dog school of “I’m a singer but not really”, style of quote, unquote r&b.

I can’t stand how these new crop of r&b stars seem to want to capitalize on the and r&b thug image, i.e. songs that incorperate graphic sexual imagery all reffering to sex acts and none about love(seriously, how many songs did we get with references to a mans jizz the past couple of years) and the tough guy bravado. I.e. tats, rapping and more sex. And lets not forget good ol’ autotune.
I honestly look at all these new dudes are using r&b as a hustle in which they can do their hiphop thing, but couldn’t get signed as a rapper.

I’m just glad he is sticking to R&B and not going the dance/pop route.

I agree, Trey Songz IS the king of Young RnB (a sub-genre envisioned and concocted in his mind) precisely because Anticipation 2 and #Lemmeholdthatbeat2 have made such an indelible impression in the thoughts and minds of the urban youth.

Buddy, by the time Usher was 26 he had already released:
    .
    U make me wanna
    Nice and slow
    My Way
    U Remind me
    U Got it bad
    U Don’t have to call
    .
(and I’m being generous by not listing at least ALL THOSE tracks from Confessions too!)
    .
Trey is 27 and his legacy thus far cant even touch the first 2 singles i listed. If he is king of this self-created new genre, then how does he explain his dearth of commercial success. I’ll even put Drake above him!
    .
    .
stop bragging and practice your craft then maybe you can catch up to where Usher was when he was a year younger than you…even post-Rhianna-Chris Brown with his reputation is having more commercial success that this Tre

I don’t disagree with Trey. I think his style embodies what r&b is right now and where it should stay…. Here is another good example of the direction of where r&b and soul is going. This girl is from Detroit and is an amazing songwriter and artist. Her name is Anesha: LISTEN http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1scXpR4ALlw

I like majority of Treyz Music but ummm, you are no ones RnB king, maybe you are at the top of this electro-rap-talking-singing everybody is doing, but you are no ones RnB king.. Usher has accomplished more in the same amount of time; Chris Brown has more commercial success with RnB.. Trey is up there, but you aren’t the H.N.I.C. by no means… try singing instead of rap-singing for a change

Chris Brown holds the crown of Trey’s made-up genre, and Chris does r&b and pop. As a matter of fact, R. Kelly kinda did a ‘passing of the torch’ to Breezy. How many R&b dudes are pulling Bieber and Gaga numbers for tours? EXACTLY!!! And He dominates what he does. He’s a vocal beast, he’s the best dancer in his lineup, he’s an artist (literally, drawing and stuff), a writer, and he raps for leisure- He’s learned every craft to proficiency and Trey Songs is ego tripping on the ONE THING that he is ARGUABLY good at??? GTFOH Trey. You need to adhere to R. Kelly’s advice. That nigga got more grammys than skin cells. Pay attention!

I think that Trey is on point with his statement. He is an authentic artist and I don’t see him compromising his craft in order to crossover. I love Usher but all those singles you named (Nice & Slow, You make me wanna, and all the songs from Confessions) are 10x better than the ish he is releasing now…he compromised his music in order to stay relevant and so has Chris (Forever, Yeah 3x) and Ne-yo (One in a million, Tonight) Trey is one of the few young male R&B artists left that actually sing R&B music. The only thing that makes me mad is that his “sex symbol” image takes away from the realness of the music…sex sells though and that’s why “Invented Sex” did so well but “Yo Side of the Bed” barely made a dent on the charts…people complain about everything being overtly sexual and having no meaning in the lyrics but fail to support the music that stays true to real R&B…Trey is confident and I feel that his slow rise to fame has made him a better artist overall…can’t wait to see what else he has in store!

plz, If it’ hot, music will transcend race, gender and age no need to create your own R&B lane cause you can’t hold a candle to the rest of the male Artists or to proclaim yourself king or top dog. To me he is the male Rhianna dude has put out some nice singles but his body of work is not there for him to be that cocky/arrogant. Hasn’t Chris Brown dine more musically than he has, even Bruno mars i mean i could go on and on. he is definable a heart throb to the young and cougars out there but musically he has a long way to go son! Kevin Liles come get your Bwoy! :p

Hes not his usual cocky self, but what is going on? Looks like hes been really lost as of lately. Just out of it. King of R&B not a go. Remember back in in 1999 and 2000 when r&b was still real and had meaning, what happened? Even videos had meaning. Now everybody shaking azz, grinding on stage, and singing overly explicit songs for fame! I mean Trey has talent and all but that first album is truly classic, that is r&b from the GUT. The stuff he is putting out now sounds just like everything else.

He has talent for sure but his cockiness makes people not like him. He does well but it takes a lot more years to put such a big title under your belt expecially when you have others in the game that are going toe to toe with you. We can’t hate though many are known for giving themelves titles. they just haave to live up to it….. R Kelly did, Alicia Keys did, Mary J did…..

Well, he is telling the truth. Yes, he’s young and arrogant, but there is no other young male artist beside Chris Brown that’s close. I think since he has the most songs(mixtapes) out, proves that he is hardworking and already claimed that title. So there’s no argument about it.

Puh-lease! Didn’t watch the video nor do I care to. But people weren’t really checking for Trey Songz until this past Summer. And he has changed up his style a lot just listen to his first two albums to what he is doing now. I like his first album the best he was really channeling something there. Now his quality of music has dropped all his songs now are about the same thing just to a different beat. Chris Brown is more deserving of the crown than Trey is.

Yall need to quit hatin on my baby. He can sing, he can write, he’s creative, he on the grind, and fine as hell!! He will continue to rise as long as he continues what he is doing.
