FASHION: STYLE AT THE 2012 SCREEN ACTOR’S GUILD AWARDS

January 31st, 2012

We’re right in the midst of awards season, and next up on the road to the Oscars was the 2012 Screen Actor’s Guild Awards. The Help scored big, taking home wins for Outstanding Performance by a Cast, Best Supporting Actress Octavia Spencer, and Best Actress Viola Davis.

Octavia continued to be an unofficial brand ambassador for Tadashi Shoji, following up her lavender Golden Globes gown with another creation from the Los Angeles-based fashion house. This time she opted for a grey dress that featured a beaded top, and draped skirt.

Viola literally glowed in a white and gold custom gown from Marchesa. The strapless silk chiffon dress featured gold embroidery across the waist and bust. To complete her look, her hair was styled in large, loose curls.

As always at black tie events, black was a popular shade on the red carpet. Up All Night actress Maya Rudolph wore a Naeem Khan black and white combo gown. She finished off her timeless look with Kimberly McDonald jewelry, a Ferragamo clutch, and Casadei heels.

Glee’s Amber Riley took a red carpet style risk, wearing a bow topped halter dress by Badgley Mischka. The lace skirted frock also featured a peplum, a popular trend on the Spring 2012 runways. A chic updo and black ankle-strap heels completed her ensemble.

Opting for a classic black one-shouldered column gown was wife of actor Laurence Fishbourne, Suits actress Gina Torres. She added interest to her look with oversized dangle earrings, a bronze clutch, and black nail polish.

Red carpet queen Zoe Saldana had yet another successful outing, wearing a very fresh off the runway gown from Givenchy’s recently (as in last week) debuted Spring 2012 Couture collection. As if her dress wasn’t interesting enough on its own, she completed her look with a pair of fun Giuseppe Zanotti heels.

Screen legend actress Cicely Tyson went for full drama on the red carpet. She wore a cream colored silk gown that had a grey sheer overlay with long sleeves. She topped it off with a matching grey and cream fur wrap.

Actress Naya Rivera of Glee also hopped on the grey train, wearing a sultry beaded Naeem Khan creation. She showed off her fabulous figure in the deeply v-necked gown. Long, flowing locks, and a few choice pieces of jewelry finished her look.

Though neutrals dominated the SAG Awards red carpet, a few brave ladies opted for bold hues. Modern Family actress Sofia Vergara donned a fuchsia silk strapless gown by Marchesa. Showing she’s definitely not one to shy away from color, she paired her dress with matching pink colored jewelry.

Southland actress Regina King dazzled on the red carpet looking better than ever in a lavender Alberta Ferretti gown. The purple hue of her dress was a perfect complement to her glowing skin, which she showed off by foregoing any neck jewelry and wearing only pair of teardrop earrings, and a single bracelet.

TV personality Shaun Robinson also opted for a bright colored strapless dress. She wore a

    No tape over my mouth!

I don’t want anyone to feel like I am taking any credit from the great work both these women did in “The Help” At the same time I’ve seen both women play other amazing roles, how come it took for them to play a maid to get acknowleged. How much have we evolved in the eye of mainstream America. Once again in no way, shape, or form a I attempting to take credit from the preformance both these women delivered.

That’s been an issue for a while now. Look at the roles Denzel & Halle played before getting their Oscars. Denzel should’ve recieved one for X but it took him playing a thieving, cheating, lying cop to get some recognition. And let’s not even discuss the tramp Halle had to potray in Monster’s Ball!!!

Yep… It’s the same thing over and over again. Bucks, coons, the jezebel (or tragic mulatto), and the mamie. History just repeating itself. Smh… I tried to explain this to a “friend” of mine and they completely dismissed the actual and factual evidences that are there throughout history. It really saddens me that people aren’t aware of what continues to be a struggle. I concur with ‘No tape over my mouth’ in that I do not want to take anything away from these fine actors, but I must express a certain amount of frustration and grief in knowing that we still have a very long way to go.
