Former Danity Kane and Dirty Money starlet Dawn Richard makes her solo debut with the video from her first solo album, GoldenHeart. The track, “SMFU (Save Me From U),” produced by Druski is Dawn’s first visual as a solo artist. The New Orleans native premiered the video today on BET’s 106 & Park.
GoldenHeart is set to hit stores some time this spring.
Nice Video, Nice Song, Beautiful Voice, but she sounds a lot like the singer Brandy.
I felt the same way when someone played this for me a few weeks ago, immediately thought it was her until they told me it wasn’t. Nice song but yea she’s gonna have it rough with those comparisons if she continues singing in that tone. But then again, it’s not like Brandy is creating any music of substance these days and Dawn will probably reach a new age group of fans pre-Brandy, so who knows could be a win for her.
I’ve always liked Dawn, she has a unique sound. I like the song but I am a bit confused concerning the video concept. All in all I give her an “A” for effort and look forward to her new music.

Exactly…this song reminds me of something Brandy would do and I hope Brandy is coming out soon with something Im tired of waiting. Brandy would’ve killed this song, but Dawn is trying to find her sound, I guess…

U can say that again. The video and wardrobe does not communicate the message of the song. Its like they really wanted to give her that Rhianna “good girl gone bad” played out look and forgot about the message of the song. The video
could have been more appropriate with a different song.
I also recognize some of the choreography from sean bankhead.
The dance routine does not fit. Its a really poor choice of direction. Fire the person or people.

Nah, too Brandyish. Dawns vocals, harmonies and arrangements have never sounded this Brandy like since i have been listening to her music, and as someone said her voice sounds processed. I’ll just wait a while longer to hear the real deal.
I’m not here for imitations. You don’t spend years trying to be a solo artist and then come out sounding like someone else and not yourself.

Missing element: Story line ie. A girl gets caught up at a young age with an older guy, as she gets older and matures realizes that he is no good for (whatever reason the storyline would apply) but haven’t found a way to break away yet.
Other than that I like the song and video….just needed a story line to fit who she is which is deep.

D.O.P.E Period. I like that she is doing something fresh and incorporating ideas that are outside of the norm or what we are seeing in general from other singers today.

Why is this video so cheap? It’s a solo debut video and they only did a cheap video with 3 shots? Beyonce would have only put something like this on a compilation video dvd and called it a day. This is not a Single-quality video.
And that choreography made no sense with this song and video.
Try again. I kind of want her to succeed in a wierd way, its not like brandy is doing anything. But honestly, try again, and fire some folks.
I applaud her for being smart and not putting out a million dollar video. That money comes out of the artist’ pockets. So no…she can’t do a “Beyonce video compilation”. She probably made the decision on style, no wardrobe changes etc., as a business decision…get her video out/music out there and the label might put more funding behind her project if she gets a decent response. Artists are at different levels…can we respect them for where they are and what they are trying to do?
I heart Dawn. Kudos to her for breaking free from Diddy’s grasp and actually pursuing a solo career. Sidenote: Her legs look great in this video!

Love the song. Her mixtape was soooo HOT to me very different and the beats are nasty. Some of the dancers in the video that were flanked behind her made this look mighty late though.
the song is a great one. The video slightly ruins it though lol. the hair, the makeup and the outfits, not a fan. She shouldve been more natural with a not so lop-sided hairstyle. and the bridge part in the song can get lost because of the over production. I could hardly hear the words. But other than that…good job girl. Keep at it!

Im reaaally hurt that they added a back beat to this song for the video. It was just fine with the acoustic piano. Agree with most ppl..this is definitely a Brandy imitation. The arrangment and sound is alot like Brandy but Brandy has that special umf that would have gave this song what it needed..even though she sounded like brandy on this..i didnt feel it..when brandy sings, i feel it. Why does it seem like artists from Pdiddy camp comes out imitating someone else, like the other girl from Dirty Money who release that song video (got to work…something) which was in imitation of Missy. 1st of all, the Brandy comparisons need to stop! I mean there’s nothing wrong with comparing Dawn to Brandy, but there’s a difference in saying she sounds like her & then saying she’s a wannabe. I’m a very devoted fan to both & yes Dawn & Brandy have similar tone, but not exact tone! Dawn even admitted herself in an interview on youtube that she believed that her tone was slightly different than hers & it is Dawn has a strong voice & sings high alot. Brandy’s voice is much more raspier & deep & they’re FRIENDS in real life.
