EVENTS: ESSENCE’S ‘BLACK WOMEN IN MUSIC’ (INSIDE COVERAGE + VIDEO)

February 10th, 2012
( L-R ) CL Contributor Christine Eboseta, Kelly Rowland and CL founder/editor Angel Laws

After gracing the red carpet, honorees Kelly Rowland, Sylvia Rhone and all of their supporters took the festivities into the Belasco Theatre in Los Angeles, California ( February 8 ). Inside, MC Lyte, who is the President of the Los Angeles chapter of the GRAMMYs Recording Academy – showed off her DJ’ing skills and eventually introduced music veteran Sylvia Rhone. Prior to her acceptance speech, a reel was played highlighting her accomplishments and milestones while being a mover and shaker in the industry. Upon receiving her award, she thanked her mentor/colleague Doug Morris and the late Soul Train creator/host, Don Cornelius:

“I owe thanks to a lot of people for this honor. There’s one person who I wish was here. Someone who supported and inspired me, a visionary, an icon of our culture, a very, very close friend. Words cannot say how much I owe and will miss Don Cornelius.”

Kelly Rowland hit the stage next and performed snippets of songs from her Destiny’s Child days like “Independent Women (Part 1)” and “Survivor,” then sang some of her solo career singles like “Dilemma” & “When Love Takes Over.” Producer Rico Love presented her with a plaque for selling over 1 million digital downloads of the collaborated single, “Motivation.”

Why didn’t “Essence” (a white jew run publication) get to the point and call the awards the “Black Lesbi@ns in Music” awards. That would’ve been more appropos. I understand that “Essence” is (allegedly) a magazine that caters to black females, but I’m not aware of any awards ceremonies that give out awards strictly to black males. It seems like the black female is desperate for attention by any means necessary.

Your the most pathetic person out there in the world. Didn’t you come from a black woman?? That’s all you talk about, so I guess you love us, just admit it. LMAO!!! You don’t know jack shit about a black woman, I yet to see you even talk to one in depth, thinking you know so much. The most idiotic person is you. You act smart by rebutting the same words just to make yourself intelligent but you are not, why don’t you crawl back into the rock where Angel put you since last year!!! LMAO!!!

I think that you need to admit that you love me, because you are clearly my number one fan. You’re upset because I have not spoken TO YOU “in depth”. Like I’ve already stated, you (like most black females) just need attention. Too bad your toy can’t cuddle with you and have a conversation after it’s finished doing it’s duty lol. You, and many others, do not comment unless you’re responding to some of the truths that I bring out, because my comments disquiet the demons that are on you. You must have switched up your meds because I see that you’ve finally stopped typing in all caps lmao. That’s a good thing.

      @ JUDAH:
I have not looked at it that way… How about like TSN or something – do they give awards to both Men and women? I guess they also do not single out a race. That is a really, REALLY good observation!!

We need to take a closer look @ ourselves as black people… why all this micro-separation? And we also need to let these “media outlets” know it is not okay to capitalize on our separation as a race.

To be equals, we must treat all as equals. I don’t know if I would say all black women want attention… but lately I have noticed quite a few angry black MEN and WOMEN… I don’t like being told “what kind of woman I am” – It hurts being prejudged by my own.

Can’t we all just get along? I love me my black men (In my most southernest accent) lol.

You need to snap out it and come into reality boo-boo this America Hun, not Africa,Haiti, or Jamaica you give white people reasons to think we are intimidating!!! No shade jus saying!!!
