Prior to the West beating the East, Mary J. Blige took to center court and performed the national anthem at the NBA All-Star Game on Sunday night at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida (February 26). The Queen of Hip Hop soul sang her rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” with a touch of MJB swag. Check her out in the video below. Alright, Mary. Props to yardie for the clip!

She went for the *BIG* notes (“Rockets red glare..”) and her range isn’t large enough so she started shouting.

I just never thought her voice had great quality – even when she first came out and they pitted her against CeCe Peniston, I was like well CeCe is definitely the better vocalist. Mary just has great producers & such behind her. But a songstress, NO.
I actually thought she sounded decent, and I’m not a big fan. She wasn’t pitchy, her voice didn’t crack…that’s her voice, I don’t know what the big deal is ’cause it doesn’t “sound” whatever normal is supposed to be.
The only part that was questionable was the ending. She sounded fine during the rest of the performance….it was souful. Saying she sounded bad is a long reach

Mary sounded horrible. I never was a fan of her voice i thought people praised her for the music she put out but clearly she isn’t a vocalist by no means. She tried to put some soul in it but lets be real she isn’t no beyonce or Whitney. Sorry Mary go get “Mr. Wrong” and have a drink or 2.

I feel Mary J. Blige did a great job,she sounded like a real singer without all the over produced pro tools used in the studio,anyone who knows voice,knows that each and every performance is going to sound and be different,take Adele’s/Jennifer Hudson’s at the Grammys,everyone went crazy over their performance,they sounded ok, not great,not pitch perfect.The Star Spangled Banner is one of the most difficult songs to sing,and that is why most performers chose to lip synch the song to make sure it sounds pitch perfect(Check The Facts).People need to stop being overly critical of singers/performers and know that with everyone in life,people have off days(singers/performers included.)My bad,I forgot we are in an age/time where everything/everyone sounds like a computer generated clone,Lil Wayne,Drake, Nicki Manaj,Britney Spears,Keri Hilson,Rhianna,Katy Perry and the list is endless.Personally I prefer a real singer who is not pitch perfect all the time and singing live, to a person who is performing to a pre recored track,and music execs wonder why concert attendance/record sales have falling off!

Wow. It started out rocky. She pulled it together a little bit…and then she crashed and burned. Everyone cannot conquer the Star Bangled Banner…and that is absolutely OK. Mary is great at what she does. But I’m really over her in thigh high boots and leggings. And the hair was not hot either. She needs to retreat from that hair style. She was clearly not together on all fronts, and she’s always so on point. But again, everyone is entitled to an off day – this was Mary’s.

This was a good performance. I know Mary can do this better because she has done it better on serveral occasions. The only time she went off track was the very end. Plus there was no music and this was LIVE. Most performers today would not dare try this LIVE and without music.
