Singer/actress Jennifer Hudson payed tribute to the late great Whitney Houston during the 54th Annual Grammy Awards. She sang one of Whitney’s most memorable songs, “I Will Always Love You” while fighting back tears. Check it out below.
In related news, singer Chaka Khan was expected to take the stage alongside Jennifer Hudson but opted not to perform because it was too early. Tweeting, “As I grieve the loss of my friend and “little sister,” I don’t feel it appropriate to perform at this time. Continue to pray for the family.”

I was very disappointed with the short timing on the tribute of Whitney but i do understand it was short notice but i think it could have been longer than 3 minutes. Jennifer’s performance was good though it was hard for her to hold back from crying and singing at the same time.

WAIT!!!!!!………….THAT WAS ALL??!!!!!……(mad face)…WELL AT LEAST J.HUD DID THE SONG JUSTICE AND EVEN THOUGH IT WAS SHORT SHE DID A VERY GOOD JOB!

WE LOVE YOU WHITNEY!!!!
sn: I used to always sing this song to my friend (who hates my singing) and I would always do the part
“AND IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII–EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII WILL ALWAYS LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEEEEE YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU! IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII……”
ok I’ll stop! I just had a moment!
Chaka did the right thing.. And that all I have to say about that except love whitney and we will never have anyone like her..
She tried…
She did a great job and it was touching. She brought the emotion for sure.
cries
Sometimes less is more, it was short but the awards weren’t about Whitney so why does everyone expect for them to make it about her? They paid their respects with the prayer, her grammy performace and the tribute they were there to celebrate music and the talent of the nominee’s I think it was fine now if they choose to do some other type of tribute at a later date that is deemed more appropriate
Exactly, and I think LL made mention of that as well on the red carpet to Ryan Seacrest, that it was a somber time, but that they were not trying to let it overshadow how big of a night it was for others.
She did a good job given the notice and her ability to just come in. She looked a bit hippy though but still slim, what’s that about?
That’s padding, that dress is for a hour glass figure which she no longer has so they of course used the famous butt and hip padding
A little hippy. She look horrible. As always I wish Jennifer would find a stylist that can match her exterior to her voice. In my opinion that should have gotten Christina Aguilera to pay tribute to Whitney.
^ I thought of Christina but I think she would’ve over sang it like she often does. She does too much 99% of the time.
The Grammy’s were not catering to Whitney Houston death or the lost the music industry experience. They were simply not very interested. Although, they gave her 5 minutes I think they should have dedicated way more time.
Jennifer Hudson, is the only artist that has the vocal ability that comes close to Whitney Houston. Considering the death of Whitney Houston only occurred 24 hours prior to the show. Jennifer Hudson blew it out the park. She was very emotional and fought to hold the tears back. It was classy and flawless. Great job!
So true!!! Well Said
I agree! J Hud did so good. Christina Aguilera would have just yelled through the entire song. Christina can sing but I don’t think she would have been perfect for that particular song. I also agree with MSLYNC J Hud needs a new stylist…
hated it…It was missing the emotion. I agree that Jennifer Hudson is a power house singer but Whitney made it effortless with Harmony.
When Whitney sang this, it was Dolly’s song, and she (Whitney) owned it…giving chills every time it was heard. J-Hud doesn’t do that. Just my opinion. Another singer should have been utilized.
she did good ,i think she sang her heart out bt maybe its just my oppion
If J.Hud could stop sounding like she’s eating & step-up her lace front game, I might enjoy her performances more.
J Hud did NOT do the song justice. Her voice was not appropriate for this song. Whitney has a powerful, effortless, smooth voice. Jennifer’s is also powerful but in a “churchy” way. I would have rather watched a montage of Whitney’s performances than this.
ENDORSED! WELL SAID
Did you haters ever stop to think that she chose NOT to hit those high notes like Whitney? Maybe she didn’t want to sound like Whitney but sing FOR Whitney? I swear you haters are just as bad as racists…Go plank in
traffic!
you guys spelled “payed”… it is paid.
Jennifer killed it. She sang flawlessly, she had emotion and it came from a place of love. Why yall gotta hate so much?
I am so happy that Jhud did it and made us all Proud of her Idol.. very short and all but i will do the grammy read/recap on my show so chk that out,,, RIP Whitney,,, LovU

Jennifer did great. She was able to sing after her own family tragedy so I am not surprised she pulled it through for Whitney.
I wish there were more songs, but I understand it was last minute of course. Maybe at next year’s Grammys (maybe??) they will do something bigger. I hope other upcoming awards shows will do tributes.
Maybe another public memorial/tribute as was done with Michael Jackson???? That would be great!
For you folks, who I doubt are serious and/or professional music critics, please stop trying to slight JHud’s performance and consider the following: 1) This was untimely (Whitney’s death that is). 2) The Grammys were already planned before Whitney’s untimely death. 3) JHud was called in at the very last minute and asked to do the tribute and was very gracious and courageous in agreeing to do so. 4) If you really watched her performance objectively, you’ll see that she was overcome with emotion that she was trying very hard to fight back as Whitney was who she idolized. 5)Whitney was the one singer JHud looked up to so as a kid as she professed. 6) She inidicated in other forums that one of the most memorable highlights of her career so far was when her idol Whitney presented her with her grammy in 2009 just after coming back from her own tragedy she with the loss of her mom, brother, & nephew. 7) For those of you who think her voice is not suited for the song, I would suggest you go try finding a clip of her singing this same song to Whitney at the 2010 BET Honors. Whitney absolutely loved it and the crowd gave JHud a vigorous standing ovation afterwards. 8) We know that there will never ever be another Whitney Houston as she was a one of a kind original, but I’m sure she smiled again down from Heavens watching JHud pay tribute to her one last time. 9) GREAT JOB JHud! Classy performance. 10) R.I.P. Whitney “The Voice” Houston, we will always love you!
Yeah you could tell JHud was trying to hold back the emotion. When they did a close-up of her face you could see her glossy eyes, she was obviously trying to hold back the tears.
Very well spoken. Thank you.
I think J Hud did a gracious emotion filled wonderful job on the song. She wasnt trying to sound like Whitney- she was singing to Whitney! I agree with Blkplaya 9891 totally! Thanks for the detailed clear explanation. RIP Whitney
jen, did’t see the performance last nite, just viewed it, it was very touching. it was wonderful. i really had kind of fogotten what a magnificent voice you have. you have a strong, powerful instrument, don’t let it go to waste …
…. and the acappella portion was sublime
J Hud is amazing. And this was an amazing performance. RIP Whitney Houston.
Side Note: J Hud could have a way bettter career if she sang songs that showcased her voice and stopped singing those hood love songs. IJS
The only person who should have sang that was Mariah Carey.
I agree. Mariah Carey should have been there.
I give JHud props.. it would have been disrespectful I think for her to go all out.. The producers of the Grammys wanted JHud to do a medley of Houston’s songs, But JHud told them “No”.. due to the fact it is too fresh and she wanted to respect the family.. I think JHud did the right thing.. Job well Done Jennifer!!!
@ nicole maworera
yeah, the tears flowed ….
@BLKPLAYA9891,Agree with you 100%
Jennifer performed this song for whitney when
she was alive and did it justice and she did
it justice last night when you think about it.
