Outraged over the lack of an arrest in the death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, hundreds even thousands rallied in Union Square in A Million Hoodies March for Trayvon Martin NYC, including his parents.
“My heart is in pain, but to see the support of all of you really makes a difference,” Sybrina Fulton, Trayvon’s mother, told the crowd. “Our son is your son. This is not a black and white thing; this is a right and wrong thing,” she said. Trayvon’s father, Tracy Martin, added, “We’re not going to stop until we get justice. My son did not deserve to die.”
The march comes after a media (particularly social) firestorm elevated Trayvon Martin’s death to the masses with 1 million+ signatures calling for self-appointed neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman to be arrested and who described Trayvon as suspicious and wearing a dark hoodie or hooded sweatshirt. Many marchers wore hoodies and carried bags of Skittles in honor of Trayvon, who police discovered with a bag of the candy along with an iced tea after he was shot and killed. Zimmerman has yet to be charged, and numerous protests are scheduled to occur around the country.

Do you really expect men from those fields to actually support a cause like this? If anything, they are part of the reason why so many young black men are badly stereotyped. Rap music soiled the black community’s sense of fashion. Black women started dressing like whores and black men like gangsters when hiphop/rap music came out. Then you have these illiterate ball players who tattoo their bodies from head to toe and have all of these young men trying to copy them. Look at how Blacks in America used to dress in the 60s, 70s and and early 80s. And this was before the hiphop era. The reason why young black men are stereotyped according to their clothing is because these dumb rappers stigmatized many of these clothing pieces. A young black boy can’t even go out in public with a hoodie on without being thought of as being suspicious. If anything those dumb athletes and rappers can stay where there are. They are part of the problem. They aren’t even good role models to begin with.

This story continue to bring tears to my eyes for I too have a young almost a teenager son and it frightens me to know that this could of been him I pray for our youth for them to grow up in peace with out being harassed by the color of their skin nor for clothes that they wear and to have true protection from our so called police departments. YES easily in the thousands. It was a great movement to be a part of and it gave you hope in knowing we could all gather peacefully and be united to fight for justice. 2012 Civil Rights movement at it’s finest.
I have a son and 4 nephews, this brings a chill over me. I’m praying for his family and any other family that has not received justice yet. I’m also praying for Rev. Sharpton’s strength as he carry on today w/his march while dealing with his mother’s passing this morning. God Bless

I attended this rally yesterday and I must say the people united and marched for what they believed was wrong. The rally and march was peaceful and the crowd was easily over 2000 people!

But honestly, even when (and I believe Zimmmerman will be arrested) he is arrested, yes…the family and community can feel better he’s off the streets, but…Trayvon will never get his life back. This is a beautiful sight! Wish I could have been there. I am glad to see people coming together. As far as all of these celebrities, it shows you that they are only concerned with your money and don’t really care about the issues of communities. They take on these charities as tax write-offs and nothing more. It’s sad how much support they get, but they can’t return it. Screw these new age celebs, quick to support a white boy writing a documentary about something they had no idea about (Kony), but can’t back up what is happening on our own soil and our own communities.

Every time I think about this story, I hold back tears. Just me imagining this poor, small, young boy walking to the store, getting candy and minding his own business and someone decides to harass him and then kills him, makes me sad. How disgusting and frightening? The police that were involved need to be FIRED! WTF do they do all day? How scary is it for you to live in an area where if something bad were to go down, there’s a good chance the police will not save you.

I mean… even Judge Judy is quick to tell a defendant that it doesn’t matter if someone hit you, you can’t go back to get a weapon to harm that person because once you get away, you are no longer in danger. If Zimmerman can “get away” from someone that was “harmful” and come back and shoot and kill him, then there are many people that I and the rest of the humans in the world are allowed to kill. That’s why laws are so strict; they don’t want a situation like this one happening. I believe that if someone hits you, you’re allowed to punch them in the face and get away with it, but if that happens, you get arrested as well. What’s so bizarre about this crime is that it really wasn’t self-defense… the b—ch got away and then came back! Plus, he had a vehicle and the boy was unarmed and a MINOR! If he was so scared, why did he go back to confront the boy?
Another thing that bothers me is, where are the celebrities? Isn’t it funny how when something sad happens to a celebrity, MILLIONS ARE VOICING THEIR OPINIONS? This story is really big right now, but oddly enough, celebrities have a big influence on their fans and just people in general and I believe they should be just as involved. Many of them are only involved with it benefits them… like with Hurricane Katrina and the Haiti situation with the performances and publicity. I’m not going to mention these two names, but how come when a singer from Barbados does a 20/20 interview about her boyfriend hitting her, Oprah and the rest of the media constantly talk about it and act like the male singer is the worst person in the world? There should be more bashing and name calling for Zimmerman. Are people even searching for this guy? How come there are 400+ comments for celebrity publicity stunts but not for this kid? I bet that a child that belonged to a big celebrity like Madonna or Diddy, who have black children, was killed like Trayvon, Zimmerman would have been arrested at the drop of a dime and sent to prison for life!

There needs to be more outcry with black on black crimes/murders, etc the way we treat and act toward each other encourages other races to treat us accordingly. Like Sharpton said, we have to not act out or else it will be used against us in Zimmermans defense. That is exactly what has been happening in police murders, the have used our reputation against us because of how we gravitate toward violence toward each other puts out a fear about us. Blacks violence does have a part in this. It instills fear because of violent reputation. We need to clean up more of the behaviors we put out there as a race. We culturalize these behaviors as the black norm because they are dominant black personalities in these hoods we live in with each other. We need to check each other more about how we act and these black neighborhoods need to stop cloning black bullying adults and black violence when there is a disagreement. I have watched adult blacks pursue violence and use their kids. I have never heard of the police in China town or the Indian community or white community as much as it stays in the black and hispanic hoods, but mostly black community. Treat each other the way you want others to treat us and view us. His blood is on the black communities hands as much as it is on Zimmerman’s because he was being judged by the reputation blacks have created by their own free will. We too busy eating chicken wings to see the forest. Zimmerman is not excused, but neither should the black community be let off the hook either. We do too much of the wrong things- fornication- rarely marry and screwing everybody and therefore have higher HIV and STD rates than other races, violence, not treating our neighbors the way we want to be treated by tearing up the black hoods,violence begats violence- the Bible say stay away from violent man and that is the reason for other races moving away not color, behavior is the reason and reputation. We need a race overhaul. A major race DO OVER. The public school need to make civility a required part of the curriculum because we just need some help in how to act and handle conflict more constructively as to not build a jacked up reputation to where innocent kids are guilty by association with the uncivilized animal blacks. These HOA and landlords need to fine and evict peole for tearing up these houses and appartments because we just cant self teach ourselves to quit tearing up crap and bringing down property values, you will lose your money when you live in a zoo called the black hood.
