AWARENESS: ‘PHILLY PAINTING’ BEAUTIFICATION PROJECT

April 23rd, 2012

Check out Episode 1 of ‘Philly Painting’, which chronicles a massive neighborhood beautification project in North Philadelphia. Famed ‘Favela Painting’ artists Jeroen Koolhaas and Dre Urhahn (known as Haas & Hahn) have teamed up with some Philly residents to bring life back to the streets of Germantown and Lehigh Avenues.

Directed by Jon Kaufman, the video talks to some current residents about why this project is needed. For more info check out PHILLYPAINTING.ORG and hit them up on FACEBOOK.

Much needed; this beautification project has been going on for years in Philly…and it truly is beautiful. I’ve only visited once for a week back in ’09, but the murals and paintings found in the poorest and most desolate of neighborhoods made a profound impression. I wish we could do more of this in Los Angeles.

For years we have been trying to bring some beauty back to one of the oldest cities in the nation. I’m proud of my city and I hope bringing back the beauty rejuvenates the people.

Philly, like many other areas has been under assault.. drugs, violence, guns, murders.. oh the shit was real crazy in the 80′s 90′s and the top of the 2000′s .. its good to see the next generation going about the business of improving their communities.. Germantown and Lehigh! yo.. thats my HOOD!
