CL TOPIC: CNN’S ‘RACE AND RAGE’ – HAVE RACE RELATIONS IMPROVED?

April 29th, 2012

This weekend marks 20 years since one of the worst race riots in America claimed the lives of 53 individuals, injured thousands and caused over $1 billion in damages in Los Angeles after the acquittal of four police officers who were videotaped beating Rodney King.

Following racially-motivated attacks against black and white teenagers earlier this month, we are sharing last year’s CNN documentary Race and Rage – The Beating of Rodney King to open the discussion on racial violence. As we look at Emmett Till, King and Trayvon Martin, have race relations improved?

How can any country who has a black president when blacks are only the second largest minority group say that race relations haven’t improved? Please stop being ignorant Americans, open your eyes to how poorly minority groups are treated around the world in their own respective countries and you will find how difficult it is to find any example of a minority (religious, ethnic etc) being elected to the highest prominent position of power.
    .
Americans tend to live inside a closed box. Barack Obama’s ascent isn’t trivial. And if the black culture in America wasn’t as devastatingly corrupt as it is (I’ve never seen such blind materialism and hatred towards your own ppl as you’ll find in young black culture).

Does abject systemic racism exist? YES! Especially in the criminal justice system. Notwithstanding that, I still our biggest issue is SELF-DISCRIMINATION.
    .
The biggest challenge for black people is black people. We kill each other. We hate on each other SOOO hard. Then we act like it’s all love (ex. when ppl say N^gga is a term of endearment even though %90 of the time it’s preceded with bitc_-a_s N^gga, d_mb N^gga, broke N^gga etc).
    .
Trayvon Martin’s case is doubly tragic. How can we in 2012 tolerate the type of insult the police/zimmerman displayed? But even further how can we act so outraged when statistically Zimmerman (as a white on black killer) represent a insignificant exception to the rule. It is most black on black violence that kills us. That! is the real outrage.

I understand everything you’re saying and it’s logical. But there is a thing called backlash which is defined as an ANTAGONISTIC reaction to a trend, event or development. If you go back and listen to the teachings of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, they discussed the backlash that African Americans would suffer as a result of segregation.

As Black people struggle to fit into a “white world” we realize how difficult it is for a number of reasons only one of which is racism directed from whites. The other is the catch up process and the overall inequality socioeconomically in the United States. Couple all of that with the fact that there REALLY is still racism in the United States and the ever growing divide amongst our race as more and more black delve into self-hatred by declaring they’re too good for their own race and turning to interracial relationships as a solution.

But overall the black on black crime is a result of self-hatred as “we” have continued to blame ourselves for the centuries of wrong done to our race and continue to feel inferior because of our skin color. It is a fact that many whites do not want to mix with black (I know this because of information obtained through my job) and that if they had a choice even today they would not attend school with blacks.

So it’s still there this idea that being black means you’re inferior. And so the self-hatred of some people grow and they take it out on those closest to them.

It’s still as a result of racism. That’s the bottom line. When people stop treating black people (All black people) as if they are inferior and/or black people learn to accept that there are people who think that way and start their own businesses and create their own empires and learn that they too have much to offer, this self-hatred will continue. You can’t wait for the “white man’s approval because you’re never gonna get it.” Love yourself enough not to need it.

So what is your plan to end self-discrimination amongst “blacks”? I always see certain negroes state the “black on black crime” plea whenever “racism” is brought up, so you must clearly have a plan to eradicate the problem. Topics like this prove that the white man is quicker to admit that he is still racist than black people are to admit this lol…..if that is not the case, why would the topic be broached? What does Barack Obama being inaugurated into the White House have to do with any substantive change in America? John Hanson was president, and a black man, back before the Constitution was even ratified. Thurgood Marshall was Supreme Court justice back in the 1950′s. Does this therefore mean that the executive system was “fair” during the 1770′s or that the judicial system was “fair” during the 1950′s? You cannot compare the racial issues in America with other countries around the world because America espouses itself based on it’s creed of multi-ethnicity and celebration of “differences”. Other countries around the world will harbor foreigners but base themselves in a cultural, racial, and historical HOMOGENEITY and history.

I think too many of us are comfortable living the way we have been, whether good or bad, because it’s what we know. Choosing anything different means possibly setting yourself apart from your peers and maybe your family. We feel like we’re surviving just as long as we’re in the same environment with each other, even if we’re killing and stealing from each other. We don’t realize the time when it is appropriate and necessary to go against the norm and develop new friendships, new relationships and new ideas. If we TRULY want to survive, we have to stop being so distrusting of everything we don’t believe is “black enough”. We ALL have a responsibility in improving racial relations.

Every time we get comfortable someone like George zimmerman reminds us what’s really going on. We still have a long long way to go.

DEE DEE, the very reason you all stay stuck in the past and don’t move forward is in your statement. The Zimmerman incident was not a racial incident, but you all will never see that. There was a black nurse recently who shot and ran over a white woman and killed her and stole her 3 day old baby. What do you call that? Why is not all over the news? Because the woman killed was white. Because there was no Sharpton looking for the $$$. Until you all see these things and stop honing in on just yourselves and learn to see there’s a whole other world out there who doesn’t think like you, you will never change and race relations will never change. It’s a mindset. You have to learn it, or go backwards. I don’t mean this in a bad way. It’s meant to be constructive. Like…if only you could see.

You need to redirect your comments tl someone else because I didn’t shoot anyone. How is it not a race incident with Zimmerman saying things like “fucking coon”? Are you blind? I promise you Trayvon Martin would still be alive if he had been white. I read.the story you mentioned and it was clearly a crime of opportunity. Maybe your people should take their heads out of the sand?
