It’s R&B singer Monica! The 31 year-old was all smiles in her bright outfit while shopping with a friend in Cali. Her 7th studio album, New Life was released last week and according to reports she only sold about 70,000 copies the first week. CHECK OUT OUR OFFICIAL REVIEW HERE.

Do you get paid for hating so much? When you have to reply to your own negative posts that means you are just bitter for no reason. I think Monica looks happy and healthy. I did not buy her new album but listened to it online at centric’s site. I think the album is ok. Definitely not as good as Still Standing because it was rushed. I have met Monica before though at her concert when she toured with Trey Songz. I would definitely say that out of all the celebrities I have met she is one of the most humblest, down to earth, and nice people I have ever met. P.S. nothing is wrong with looking like a “soccer mom” when you are a mother/wife in real life.
@ Jasmine – I have met Monica a few times as well (in fact last Friday I met her again) and each time she has been nothing but nice. She was so warm and inviting and very down to Earth. She laughed and joked, took pictures with the TONS of fans and signed autographs for over 200 people. When she entered the space, she said, ‘I will meet each and every one of you before I leave’and that is exactly what she did. So I agree with you. She appears to be happy and fulfilled.
No “hateration”, but Monica fell off when she married Shannon Brown…maybe even before that. She sings well, but that bad bish attitude is not becoming at all. Stay true to the hood, but grow up. I think the interview she did with Brandy on the radio really made me not want to buy any of her cd’s…ever. Respect lost… #teambrandy
I agree. She is a bitch! The ho wanted to rent my house for a video shoot a few years ago and had me waiting all day for her ass. She didn’t show up, call or nothing. We finally got in contact with her people late that night and they told us that she had chosen another place. What a ruthless, coniving old fashioned lady!
Monica did decent for R&B today, this is not the 90′s when the heavy weights were selling 1,2 mill first week. But I want to know why she is rocking that Weezy Jefferson outfit?

I like Monica’s back catalogue, but New Life is a bore! Thanks be that SWV came out yesterday. Monica needs to realise that the competition is hard and a name with previous hits mean nothing . SWV are on an independent label and have brought major label music. Now all I’m waiting for is Teedra Moses and Fantasia…. some Keke and Kelly P. brandy also if decent.

I think that Monica’s new CD is incredible. People aren’t use to the new Monica, and never want to support artist when they change. I think she looks beautiful and her new CD is AMAZING.

I love New Life, It’s a great R&B album, & if her label would have done a better job at promoting New life the album & not just that damn reunion she would have sold more.
Monica’s album is not great by a long shot. She needs a new team because everything she does sounds the same. Not crazy about SWV’s new one either. It has its moments where it is good but collectively it’s lacking. Thank God for Mary J Blige’s My Life II and I’m waiting to see what Brandy does as well
New Life is a great CD. Some of the songs still have to grow on me, but for the most part at first listen, it is a decent CD. Monica has matured a great deal since the onset of her career. I like Brandy too, but she cannot light a candle to Mo’s singing voice. Now in terms of style – I agree, Mo needs a new stylist and FAST! She NEVER quite hits the bar with her clothes. Singing – YES! Style – NO! New Life – wins!
I have been a fan of Monica since she first came out and girl has always been able to blow, but I’m not bias. Her biggest mistake imo is not being able to reinvent herself or give us some varied vocal stylings, to which she should look to her musical mother Mary J Blige for advice. That is one of the things I’ve always appreciated abt MJB, the fact that she can constantly flip her sound and style to fit any genre (hince her winning grammys in pop, rock, r&b, gospel and hiphop). New Life needs some life to it. Plain and simple its boring. As far as Brandy, that girl has always been able to croon her ass off so I am looking forward to her new cd. The only one who needs to give Rico Love another call is Kelly Rowland. SWV cd is solid if but I wanted to hear something new sounding from them as well, which they stayed completely away from. My Life II (MJB) is the only R&B cd this year so far, that gave me a little of everything I look for in r&b, hiphop and soul. I wish Mo well on her effort and look forward to what Brandy will bring to the game
Kinda off topic but when it comes to great R&B albums i have to go with Melanie Fiona. In terms of varied sound and vocal styling she hits it all with me. The MF Life is a great album.

I totally agree. Really, do folks listen to what is being played these days. I’m not saying this because Im over 40, but music has fallen a longgggggg time ago. Its a shame that my children will have to consider this music as their “oldies but goodies.”
Im so glad someone said it. People dont tend to forget that album sales in the 90s were so huge because you had no other way of hearing the music unless you bought it. Not with the internet, it literally takes a minute to download a full cd for FREE! Recession or no recession, a lot of people still tend to take the free route because they feel that their $9.99 wont make a difference. I commend Monica for 70,000 first week. In my opinion thats cool considering that she is solely a singer and doesnt have a gimmick.

I LOVE NEW LIFE!!! It speaks to the grown woman going thru. @LA glad you used Mary as the example because guess what she doesn’t go platinum anymore either. People say they want 90′s R and Band Monica gave it now some say they want something new. It’s all opinions and presence. I would say for Monica to be in the game 17 years how amazing is it that she came in #2 on billboard with this album. R and b music doesn’t saw much now days . Bad sales are Melanie Fiona first week with 29,000 and guess what she won a GRAMMY. Monica sings to her core . @concreteloop you usually state more facts. You and a few don’t like the record but her sales were fine for today’s time. I do feel that as a blog after you state your opinion once that’s enough. I will say this. I’ve NEVER met a celebrity more kind and humble. Monica stayed 2 hours longer than the 3 allotted to sign every cd the other day. She was behind genuine. And it’s a known fact she can BLOW…. Who said anything about going platinum. You sound like ur pressed and reaching for whatever you can grab at. My comment wasn’t a Mary vs Monica comment. I love all the ladies that I mentioned. But since you want to mention platinum status, Mary’s last album sold 900K+. The only thing keeping it from platinum is the certification and this new album, My Life II, has just been certified gold and is the best selling R&B album so far this year with the best first week sales in R&B so far as well. All which is excellent after 20 strong years in the game. Mary is also celebrating 20 consecutive years on the Billboard charts this month with her 25th Top 10 R&B single, Mr. Wrong. My Life II is still selling 7 months after its release so to say she doesn’t go platinum anymore may be a bit premature. With another single around the corner, we don’t know where this cd will ultimately land. But what we do know is, its goona take a lot of work to even get gold when you selling and sitting under 100K. I won’t even go there on Monica over you, b/c I do like her and like I said I wish her well in her efforts. How I feel about Monica’s new cd remains the same and is a matter of personal opinion.
Thank you, thank you Camilleoutof and others who brought perspective to the discussion. Monica loves her fans and is a talented singer. We can not continue to measure the success of vocalist based on criteria from 10 or even 5 years ago. It is a new ballgame.

I love when artists have the guts to evolve, however, Monica is going into a realm that is not hers. Look at her mentor, Dana Owens (Queen Latifah)…I would put Brandy in a CoverGirl ad…Monica…I don’t think so…

I have to agree with ONYX. That interview with Angie Martinez made me dislike Monica. I bought every Monica album and have noticed that her attitude has gotten worse. I don’t get the attitude. She needs to grow up because bitterness is not cute.

I can attest, Monica is very sweet. The tuff girl “Miss Thang” image just does not mesh well with the public. How are you a “church girl”, but act like a thug? That does not add up. Not saying she has not went through trials, but her background does not correlate to the likes of Mary J. Blidge whom grew up in the projects and dealing with abuse. I can also include Keyshia Cole’s past with a drug addicted prostitue mother being in prison and being adopted, plus being from Oakland. There images of being a tuff girl can mesh with the public. Monica, is southern, is a church girl, and people just aint buying it. Just like KeyCo they both need to grow with their music and sound. Mary was lost with this album and it just did not set well with her fans.
You cannot speak for all of Mary’s fan. Being on the verge of pushing 600K with her album (no other “R&B” artist is pushing these #’s today), plenty of her fans supported and enjoy My Life II. I personally appreciate the throw back to Hip Hop Soul that she gave on the majority of the album, with a touch of contemporary towards the end. “Feel Inside” ft. Nas – Craaazy hot, “Midnight Drive” – Banging, “25/8″ -Modern and classic soul wrapped into one, “Why” ft. Rick Ross – HipHop Soul at its finest, “Love A Woman” ft. Beyonce – beautiful classic r&b, “Don’t Mind” – Crazy hot, “Mr. Wrong” ft. Drake – the ladies anthem. Those are just a few of the songs on her My Life II album. So to say she is lost is far from being true. Mary gave us that grown HipHop Soul that only she can deliver. One of her best albums in years.
