On Wed., April 11, forty-five days after the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, George Zimmerman was charged with second-degree murder.
At a news conference held Wednesday evening, special prosecutor Angela Corey announced the charge against the neighborhood watch volunteer (View Video), thanking law enforcement officials for their hard work and pledging to continue in the pursuit of justice for Trayvon Martin. The 28-year-old turned himself into authorities and was transported to the Seminole County Criminal Justice Center, where he was booked and processed. If convicted, Zimmerman could face life in prison.
“He deserves a fair trial. We don’t want anybody high-fiving tonight. There’s no victory here. There are no winners here. They’ve lost their son,” Al Sharpton said of Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton, who spoke following Ms. Corey’s announcement. “We simply wanted an arrest; we wanted nothing more, nothing less. We just wanted an arrest, and we got it and I say thank you, thank you Lord, thank you Jesus,” Ms. Fulton said.

Zimmerman’s attorneys, Craig Sonner and Hal Uhrig, withdrew from the case on Tuesday following the creation of therealgeorgezimmerman.com by Zimmerman “to ensure my supporters they are receiving my full attention without any intermediaries” and his speaking to Fox News talk show host Sean Hannity and prosecutor Angela Corey.
By the time Zimmerman was arrested, however, criminal and family law attorney Mark O’Mara had been hired to defend him. O’Mara told reporters, “I think (Zimmerman) is troubled by the fact the state decided to charge him. I think anyone charged with second-degree murder would be scared.” O’Mara asked for no prejudgment, adding “I am hoping the community will calm down. We have to have faith in the justice system.”
A bond hearing (at which point a judge will decide whether bail will be allowed) is scheduled for Thursday, and O’Mara said he would be seeking the release of his client who will plead not guilty. Stay tuned to @ConcreteLoop for the latest as the case develops.

If Zimmerman was black, these protest would not have happended, tell the truth, hame the devil negros. Black peope still killing blacks all day everyday for anything. These other races aint crazy, they know how we act toward each other and dont want no part. The point is here is that Zimmerman targeted this Black Kid because of the color of his skin. If it had been a white kid or person he would not have 1.)suspected him, followed him, targeted him, leading to the result of killing him. This is a true tragedy. @ Meeka: I really don’t think RACE is the only issue we have here with Zimmerman vs Martin. I think it has a lot to do with POLICE POWER. If Martin was a Jew or Muslim, black, white, or whatever color, Zimmerman would get away with it anyway… why? Because he’s a neighborhood watch… which is as close to a police officer as you can get. He protects and watches the neighborhood… helps police catch the bad guys and at the end of the day.. he’s almost like family to the police and they will protect their own… no matter what.
Explain why he had a gun… which by the way he’s not supposed to have as a neighborhood watch. Explain why the POLICE didn’t take any urine from him for tests to see if he was drunk or if he was the probable cause for the shooting? They protected him and shielded him until all hell broke loose. That’s why the police are/were trying to paint Martin as a troubled kid… so the shooting is justified or to make the blow a little softer for Zimmerman and make the case work in his favor.
If Zimmerman was not a neighborhood watch they would have gotten hair samples, urine… the works!! It’s all about POWER.

I totally agree. Yes, there has been progess in the case BUT this is only a small piece of the puzzle!! I will celebrate once he’s found guilty and charged for the murder of Trayvon. Just because a person is arreseted, doesnt mean they will found guilty. All we can do is pray that justice will be served…gotta keep the faith <3
