Days after the long awaited arrest of George Zimmerman, Trayvon Martin’s family dropped by BET’s ’106 & Park.’ Sybrina Fulton, Tracy Martin and Trayvon’s brother Jahvaris Fulton joined TJ Holmes for a half-hour segment and shared their fondest memories of the late teen. They discussed their thoughts and faith in the judicial system and addressed people’s thoughts on the family continuing to appear on television after Zimmerman’s arrest:
“I think the reason why we continue to do it is because we have to keep it fresh in the public’s eyes. As we know, the sooner you quiet down, the sooner they can say, ‘Okay, it’s on the back burner.’ And for me, this is my blood, this is my son, this is my seed. So I’m not going to chill. I’m not going to let it die down. I’m going to use every ounce of energy in body to keep pursuing until I get a conviction.”
What do you all think? Should the family lay low until the trial? Peep their interview after the fourth marker in the video below.
BET will be airing a special called ‘I AM TRAYVON: A Family’s Fight For Justice’ on Friday, Apri 20th at 7:30PM EST.

“What do you all think? Should the family lay low until the trial?”
I heard some people say that this woman used her son for her 15 minutes of fame or doing too much. And I’m puzzled. For those who agree please dont answer this question as you simply can’t give a good credible answer. Because obvioulsy u have not been in her shoes…unless u have lost your own seed unjustly then anybody who answer, their comments are irrelevant. But I do believe she is doing what she has to do…Ms. Mamie was not silent (for those who don’t know that’s Emmett Till’s mother)so why should she?
**if you aint about your people, then what you gon raise your fist for?**
Who are you to tell anybody that they can”t answer because they have an opposing opinion. You better get yo life boo.
As sports journalist Stephen A. Smith once said [regarding an unrelated issue]; “IM BLACK IM PROUD OF BEING BLACK BUT I DO NOT AGREE WITH EVERYTHING EVERY BLACK PERSON DOES OR SAYS” having said that yes, in my openion the Martin’s started going “Hollywood” when the issue of trademarking Trayvon’s name came into place ….ansd what is the thing with black people and thinking EVERYONE [black] has to be on the same bandwagon when theres’s a; be it political, judicial, racial, civil, etc. cause or issue on the table if Nabisco said they were discontinuing the Oreo cookie …black folk would swear it was a racial thing and make a cookie about a political stance lol as the saying goes and it holds true to our people “pick your battles wisely” yes, Trayvon’s murder was tragic and deserves the upmost justice but more than half the people in protest cant even tell you why it’s a tragedy other than “a white man shot a black boy” a lot of times we as a people jus need a cause and a bandwagon and Al Sharpton and here we go ….trademarking this young mans name and a couple of slogans and thousands of people nationwide gathering wearing hoodies… it need to be more to it than that…it all seem so “Hollywood” and disingenuous when you look at bigger picture.
But didn’t she say that she believed the shooting was an accident? And all she wanted was an arrest? I am aware that those statements were retracted and claimed to have meant something else, but I believe that was only due to the public backlash she received from it. This trial is now in the hands of the judge who will oversee the case, and will most likely be uninfluenced by public pressure.
Trayvon’s death is obviously unfortunate, but I do want Zimmerman to get a fair case. He should not go without consequence, as he has taken another man’s life, but he should not be painted as a monster when we have yet to hear his side of the story. I know I’m in the minority with this opinion, but I believe that justice needs to be equally distributed to everyone.
No one is saying he is a monster, but the fact remains he shot and KILLED an unarmed 17 year old young man. Nothing was done initially, and as a mother I would have been outraged. There are so many layers of wrong in this tragedy, but the one that resonates with me, as a mother of two, one of which is a infant son, is that this young mans life seemed to mean nothing to the authorities. So where was Trayvons Justice, it was not there until it became headline news which is very sad and disturbing to say the least.
To further answer the original question, I just want to see an equal amount of attention given to cases where racial tension is diffused and people are treated equally – cases where racism may have been evident but justice was served – situations where people are treated with respect and fairly regardless of their skin color. Because if we keep overpromoting the negative, people are going to get a skewed perception of the overall state of things, and blow things up bigger than they need to be.
Laws have been implemented because parents did not stop looking for or fighting for justice or change… ok so most were white people… don’t need to bring in race but his mom is just like those moms who have taken their cases straight to the supreme court.. so why should we want her to ‘lay low’. I am not american and you guys are lucky to live in a society where you can keep demanding for change and not sweep the negative things under a rug.
No I do not think the family should lay low but keep going until they are satisfied that their son did not die for no reason.
Yes I feel the family should lay low! No one needs to say anything that people will misinterpret and harm the case!
i wanna know why NOBODY asked them how they felt about Geraldo Rivera’s comment on the “HOODIE” being JUST AS RESPONSIBLE FOR TRAYVON’S DEATH?! SMH……
On 106 & Park??? Ok..O_o
I know if that were my child or even my family member I would not want to lay low. I have no say in what this family does. I am not a mother just yet and cannot begin to imagine her pain. I hope I never have to go through it. 106 and park despite what many believe is a good source to get things out to young teens. I’m glad they shined light on this. This could have been any teen.
I do not believe that they should lay low. Keep his memory alive. This is their child and if this helps them to grieve then so be it. They had to do what they had to do to bring justice to their son who was KILLED by someone who profiled him. I am not saying that this man went out and intentionally killed Trayvon BUT he did kill him. He profiled him, chased him and confronted him. Who knows what happened on that terrible night but rather than Zimmerman defending himself just maybe Trayvon was defending himself.
Black folk “laying low” is why so many do not get justice. Trust and believe that if your not out there fighting to make sure people don’t forget then justice won’t be served. You wonder why we never see black missing ppl aren’t on tv? One reason is that the parents aren’t fighting for it. TV stations won’t just put ppl on tv. IJS
I’ve said that least 7364330 times. SKC was here…
