    This is awesome. I hope they highlight racial disparities and how this relates to community resources: African American women have the highest rates of being overweight or obese compared to other groups in the U.S (CDC, 2010)

    African American children were 30% as likely to be overweight than Non-Hispanic Whites (CDC, 2010)

    We gotta realize that being thick N sick is not cute.

    u can be thick, but you should be healthy (exercise and eat right).

      Most African Americans are obese because their diet consists mainly of salty and buttered foods. I know plenty of AAs who swear they can cook, but their main ingredients in every dish was none other than butter and “All Purpose Seasoning” salt lol. Not to mention they cook the heck out of their vegetables (when they do eat them) that is most likely coming out of a can. I’m not saying all but most.

    This looks interesting. One thing that I noticed about most people is that they are in love with snacks. Cookies, chips, cupcakes and a whole lot of crap that you really don’t need to consume. I mean do you have to have dessert after dinner? If most people cut back on the “snacks” they eat alone, a huge improvement can be seen in a matter of months. But it’s not like people are unaware of the dangers of sugary and salty snacks/foods. The real issue is that they simple cannot control themselves.

    So many people are addicted to sugar. Sugar is the culprit because it hides in so many things. Being a busy person, it is so hard to find healthy food options, and in black areas, good luck finding anything healthy to eat. Even you if you offered healthy food options in majority black areas, they would probably go out of business.

    I had liposuction in 2005 as birthday gift to myelf, along with a little extra things done and my body just started to look its best, a few months ago. My abs are so tight from refraining from bad cravings. I love cupcakes from Cami’s Cupcakes but I never eat them since I get sugar in other areas such as my daily alcohol consumption. I work out for about 2 hours per day, so it isn’t easy to look this good. Join the bandwagon, people!

    Lol I mentioned the obesity problem, specifically amongst black females, on the Lark Voorhies thread and some black woman got angry with my comment. All one has to do is read the dietary law in Leviticus 11th chapter and they’ll know how to eat better. No pork and shellfish (yes that means no “scrimp” as negroes call it lol). No catfish either. Only fish with fins and scales, certain fowl, cloven footed animals that chew the cud, and that in moderation. According to the so-called “Christian church”, it’s ok to eat pork, and then they wonder why most of their congregation is stricken with intestinal diseases, diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. Sister Betty is not passing out in “chuch” because she caught the “Holy Ghost”. She’s passing out because she’s eating too much pork lol. In addition to that, these fast foods are created to kill people….yet you have Mary J. Blige singing about some damn double fried chicken strips with a motorcycle jacket on lol. All the foods in America are defiled even if one tries to eat healthy because of the insecticides and pesticides that are sprayed on the crops, in the air, and in the water…and besides that, most of the cattle is cloned and not grass fed, so they do not even chew actual cud anymore. Some of them are being fed meat byproducts or other artificial feeds. That is why they are contracting so-called “mad cow’s disease”. This is how we know that we are in the last days. The Lord smote the Egyptian cattle with the same plague (Exodus 9:3).

      I Agree.. ESPECIALLY about the black church,where you find the most over weight people.. How do you attend a service for 12 hours on Sunday about living right,when you’re not eating right? Then they wonder why there are so many sinners in church.. Before someone attacks my last comment, what you put in your body affects your behavior.

      I enjoy your expositions as they show your level of being an independent thinker and not one saturated in docility…you`re absolutely correct. And it`s not only these contaminated foods but the water as well with high levels of flouridation. It`s these foods and water that also contribute to cancer as well. Don`t rely on The FDA to be a saving grace because they`re not independent of The US Government. All of these companies are in cohoots when it comes to the bottom line and that`s the almighty dollar. So you just keep on believing The FDA is regulated by The US Government in a benevolent way if you want to. This, so-called, country is not above sacrificing the people for material gain. When sickness occurs the medical field fattens their pockets. It`s a deadly game being inflicted upon us in the most colossal way. These demons are indifferent when it comes to humanity.

      That’s exactly right. When you cannot control what you put into your body, that means that you cannot control your actions or your thoughts….and yes, “soul food” is slave food. No one in their right mind would eat the entrails of a pig, but most black people are not in their right minds. The pig, the shrimp, lobster, crab, the rat, etc. were put on earth to scavenge as nature’s garbage men. They were not created to be consumed. Eating too much, drinking too much, complaining too much, talking about folk too much is a sin; so yall better watch it. While you so quick to talk about what the Bible says; it says that too. Judah you say some very true comments but then you mess them up with you crazy rants, and you can talk about me all you want; I don’t care. I know who I am and Jesus Christ is my judge not you. You ought to be SHAME of using the Lord’s words to spread your nonsence.

    If you take scripture literally when it comes to the commandment, “Thy Shall Not Kill” one can reasonably conclude that it applies to animals as well. The scriptures make no distinction between humans and animals. It simply reads “Thy Shall Not Kill.” So then, I can logically conclude that, we all should be vegetarians. It`s something that should be deeply meditated upon in order to combat our eating habits. And as Judah stated in his commentary, these fast foods are death chambers. Also it supposedly takes meat 8-10 hours to digest. Anything that takes that long to digest can`t be suited for consumption.

    • JUDAH

      No, in the hebrew it actually says, “Thou shalt not MURDER.”. That law is in reference to human beings. The proof of that is that the scriptures tell us that a person can eat meat in Leviticus 11th chapter. A person is required to eat lamb on the Passover, if they keep the Passover (Exodus 12:1-11).. There is nothing wrong with being a “vegetarian”, but the Lord does not forbid anyone from eating meats, as long as they are “received with Thanksgiving” (meaning lawful according to the scriptures I Tim 4:3-5). Many so-called “Christians” try to use that same passage to prove that they can eat pork, but that is why verse 5 states that a meat has to be SANCTIFIED (meaning CLEAN) according to the WORD OF GOD (Lev 11th chapter) and “prayer” i.e. a person is supposed to pray over their meal before they eat it.

      @cheers
      Back then, yes it was bad. But we do not live by the old testament law. HOWEVER that does not mean there isn’t wisdom in the old testament law. Paul addresses dietary issues in Romans 15.

      The point is…God gave those laws, not to make him happy, but for us to properly feed our bodies in the way that he properly designed our bodies to function. The laws were basically saying…don’t put regular unleaded in a machine that requires diesel. Or vice versa.

      People have to realize that 1) Old Testament law is a mirror held up to your face to show you what was right and wrong with how you lived. for example…how would you know not to touch the stove if your mother didn’t say “hey don’t touch the hot stove.” 2) According to Hebrews 8:13, the old covenant law is made obsolete because of the New Convenant that was ratified through Jesus Christ. However AGAIN…that doesn’t mean the old law is stupid….just because your mom isn’t going to hit you upside the head anymore yelling “hey don’t touch the stove” doesn’t mean you should go around touching hot stoves. It’s the same with the old testament law….God’s wrath isn’t going to pour out on your head for eating an unclean animal…you are indeed free to do whatever you want in Christ but like Paul said “Every thing is permissable, but not everything is beneficial”. meaning you can eat pork if you want to, God’s not going to punish you….but that doesn’t erase the consequences of your actions. You will get burned. Pork is not good for the body. Point blank. Lying is not good for relationships, point blank. Sex outside of marriage(lots of folks get mad about that one) you will get burned. People forget that those laws weren’t just made for God’s enjoyment and he throws a hissy fit when they are broken. They were made for your protection, because God knew how humanity is suppose to function, he knows what practices and action will bring out the absolute best in you and bring you to wholeness in every area of your life, but humanity doesn’t. They will do whatever they want(even when it’s harmful to them), because humanity in its foolishness thinks “well whatever feels good must be good for me”. Basically, when you were a child…your parents had to come up with rules to keep you from harmful things. It wasn’t until you were an adult that they no longer seemed like rules…but more like common sense. Their ‘rules’ were given out of love for you. Not wanting you to unknowingly hurt yourself.

    • dietary laws

      Also @ cheers

      In the old testament, alot of laws if broken led to a physical death(execution). That again is a mirror. Because even though now we don’t follow the old covenant to the letter, those same things(laws if broken) lead to a death. Emotional death, spiritual death, mental death, marital death, and if you keep eating what you eat…physical death.

      So in the OT, there is alot of illustration….if you do xyz-sin…you will be executed. It’s the same way today…except much worse. If you do xyz-sin …you will be killing yourself and may not be knowing it. Spiritual death, emotional death, relational death. All that coming from some sin. All sin is…are the limitation that keep you from being whole, healthy, and the way God designed you to be(and what he designs is always good, excellent, and prosperous). Sin in some way will keep you from those things…they are limitations.

      To be honest, there are so many interpretations of the bible. That’s why many are confused. I look to scriptures such as Romans 10:4 that state we are no longer under the mosaic law (Christ’s dying ends it). So are we just to ignore that scripture? It’s there for a reason.

      Reply /0

      @CHEERS

      The laws on the consumption of meats is two-fold, meaning a physical level and a spiritual level. On the physical plane, the unclean meats are destructive to your body. On the spiritual level, “unclean meats” i.e. doctrines, are destructive to your spirit. The people who eat any type of food will unerringly accept any type of philosophy i.e. thought process (as “Indigo” alluded to), as you can see with the erroneous explanation given by “Dietary laws”. This is why your “belly” is a metaphor for your mind in the Bible (Ezek 3:1-3, Rev 10:9,10), your “mouth” is a metaphor for your ear (Job 34:3), and “meats” are a metaphor for doctrines (Matthew 15:16-20). Essentially, YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT. If a person willingly and wantonly eats foods that they know are defiled, they will believe in lies like Easter, Christmas, etc, no matter how much proof is shown that those are pagan ideologies. That is why they worship a pagan god and do not know it, or care to. That is why Isaiah 66:17 says that those who consume swine and “the mouse” will be destroyed. When Christ cast the demons into the SWINE and they fled into the LAKE (Mark 8:30-32), that was a microcosm of the wicked being cast into the LAKE of FIRE (Rev 20:15).

      There is nothing about dietary issues in Romans 15th chapter. That is your first lie. Secondly, the laws are not “done away with”. That is your second lie. Christ tells us that the laws will never be done away with (Matt 5:17-19). When you read Hebrews 8:6-13, it is in reference to Jeremiah 31:31-34 and Ezek 37:26-28. This conversation is about eating properly and you are citing scriptures that pertain to the reclamation of the NATION OF ISRAEL. You are pulling scriptures totally out of context which tells me that you’re a “Christian” black woman lol. The “NEW TESTAMENT/COVENANT” is the law being put into the HEARTS i.e. MINDS/SPIRITS of God’s Chosen. We are not in that time yet. That will come in the Kingdom for those who are in the book of life. Certain of the elect of the seven churches during the time of the apostles experienced that GRACE i.e. spiritual powers during that time, but they FELL AWAY so that the prophecies of this latter day could be fulfilled (II Thes 2:3-12). That is why they had SPIRITUAL POWERS and we DO NOT (Acts 2:1-4, Acts 5:8-10, Acts 13:8-11, etc.). It has nothing to do with wantonly breaking the laws of the Most High, which the scriptures tell us not to do (Romans 6:15). We are in the time of MERCY and JUDGMENT, not in the time of “grace”. So that means we do our best, and when we fall short, we ask the Lord’s forgiveness. You should stop trying to break down scriptures because the understanding is not given to you.

      Romans 10:4 was in reference to the belief in Christ. You have to adhere to the laws to the best of your ability, but you must do it through Christ as the mediator (I Tim 2:5). During that time, there were sects who were trying to establish righteousness just by vainly keeping the law. They did not understand that the curse (Deut 28:15-68, Daniel 9:11-15) had overtaken the nation of Israel by that time and just “keeping the law” was vain. They did not believe in Christ as the messiah, which is why Paul and the apostles had so much contention with some of the pharisees (Acts 13:38-52). No one can keep the law perfectly in the flesh. Christ’s role was to act as the propitiation for the sins of the nation of Israel (I John 4:10).

Like you quoted, she gave her OWN UNDERSTANDING on “sin” (Prov 3:5). The Bible tells us what sin is, which is the breaking of God’s LAWS (I John 3:4), but if she cites that verse, she won’t get to go on a tangent trying to act “deep”. All that “xyz-sin” nonsense is for the birds. It sounds good at “bible study” surrounded by other confused people, but for those who’ve READ the entire Bible, it’s just more verification that some of these sisters need to put down the Good Book, and pick up the cook-book lol.

      judah….dude seriously relax.

      it was not a lie…a simple typo…..Paul does talk about what you eat in Romans 14 not 15. He talks about ‘clean’ and ‘unclean’. He’s talking about the food people would eat.

      secondly i never said anything was ‘done away with’….in fact, I said those laws(when breaking them) still lead to death, just as they did in the old testament. I said those laws are still wise and help us with right living.
      I referenced hebrews 8:13. Which says “When God speaks of a “new” covenant, it means he has made the first one obsolete. It is now out of date and will soon disappear.” I’d also like to add Hebrews all of chapter 8, 9 and also 10, which further explains what happened with the old covenant. Christ’s death and resurrection made way for a new covenant, that when you believe(faith and action) in his resurrection(romans 10:9-10) you are then grafted into that new covenant, which is what Paul was talking about in Romans 7-10, i believe.

      goodness can you ever have a discussion without becoming antagonistic? anyhoo, good day.

    I just took a biology class. Technically humans as consumers are supposed to eat from the lowest level, which is comprised of the producers, AKA plants. It’s supposed to have the most energy. The fact that we eat the majority of our food from the higher levels with lesser energy, it makes total sense why we are so unhealthy as a nation. I agree we should all be vegetarians. But is that realistic in this world? LOL

People have to SEEK OUT health, as long as it’s like that I don’t see how we as Americans will improve healthwise.

    • Gotcha. I’ve long felt there’s a conspiracy at hand when it comes to healthy eating: those who can’t afford to eat healthy end up eating the crap they can afford and those who can afford to eat healthy sometimes still waste money on crap because they’ve become so accustomed to its taste (I know I’m certainly guilty of it).

      I have to believe that if healthy food items were more readily available (and attainable), more people would choose to eat healthy because most taste much better than their counterparts; they can just be so expensive! Food Network offered a great eye-opening look at the food crisis many of the nation’s youth endure.

EXERCISE daily, more than 30 minutes, you will get healthy; and the added bonus is losing weight. No more meds, more energy, a head start on living longer.

      @Ms. Hay-Mon Not, necessarily. You can exercise less than that if you do it on a regular basis. Just have to figure out your calorie intake for your body type. Then you gradually increase your workout on what you can handle.

      @Judah Paul stated in Romans 14:1-23 that he was convinced that nothing is unclean in itself unless one thinks it is. And in the same passage he also states that you should not judge your brother for what he eats because the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking but of righteous and peace. In Colossans 2:16-22 it says that u should not act as judge to who eats and drinks what because if you have died with Christ why are you concern with things that will perish away. We are free from those laws that binded us from eating certain things, but if you and others feel differently that’s ok too. Whats not ok is you all acting like your word is law and everyone who does not think like you are demons and going to hell which not necessarily the case

    • @SHION: Paul was using food as an example and actually referring to the word of righteousness, not literal food and drink (Romans 14:17).

      @J.DAKAR

      Thank you sir lol.

      @SHION

      As J.DAKAR already stated, that chapter is metaphorical. “Meat” is the deeper aspects of the scriptures (I Cor 3:1,2, Heb 5:12-14). “Herbs” are the more elementary aspects of the scriptures. This is why I told the brother Malcolm X that there is nothing wrong with being a vegetarian. Where there is no law, there is no sin. If I were to tell him, “You must eat clean meats.”, that would be me “grieving” my brother with “my meat” (Romans 14:15) i.e. my own personal philosophy, and vice versa. If I was a vegetarian and I told someone who eats clean meats that they must be a vegetarian, that would be a grief unto him, and me leaning on my own understanding.

      Let me also address what you (mis)stated pertaining to Colossians 2:16, because that is another scripture that many so-called Christians use to prove that they can eat pork. Paul was talking about meat OFFERINGS and DRINK offerings. The Pharisees were harassing the early Christians (who were simply Israelites that believed that Christ was the Messiah) pertaining to HOW they kept the ordinances of the scriptures. Col 2:16 has nothing to do with them NOT KEEPING the ordinances. Why do you think Paul stated that they are a SHADOW of things to come in Col 2:17 (meaning we are to PRACTICE for the REAL THING)? Again, because the entire Bible is not read, the vast majority of people mis-read it, or take scriptures completely out of context. You must read the entire Bible to understand it (John 5:46). Nowhere have I stated that “my word is law”. That is you projecting your frustration on myself and at what the scriptures actually state as opposed to what you’ve been mistaught or misunderstood in your own readings (I Thes 4:8).

      @J Dakar and @ Judah Ok. Upon reading I could definitely pick up on both meanings and always wondered if he was speaking of more literally one over the other. This is something I will have to continually read and pray about and work into my life.

      But all that negativity has got to go. When you speak of these things you should think of coming at people with a different approach that’s not so abrasive. It hinderful rather than purposeful.

      @SHION

      I also addressed your citation of Colossians 2:16, but the comment was moderated. There is no negativity in my commentary, only facts. The Bible is not a novel recommended by Oprah in her “book club”; where people sit around and give their “personal opinion” and how a certain verse “made them feel”. That is something that many people, particularly you sisters, do not get. There is a reason why J. Dakar understood Romans 14th chapter immediately and got right to the point, while you did not. You can pray to the Lord for “wisdom” but the Lord is not dealing with you sisters on that level. This is why Paul stated that a woman IS NOT SUPPOSED TO TEACH (I Tim 2:9-15). I’m not “abrasive” at all. Some of these people are under the mis-perception that they know what they’re talking about, which makes them proud. Christ, John the Baptist, Paul, etc. would rebuke the people who deserved it (Titus 1:13-16).

      Pssh, all I see are a bunch of Phariees showing how self righteous and holy they are over everyone out of sport. No matter how right your arguments may be, they will always be flawed because you have no faith and hope that God is still working in this world and He can and actually will reach many of these people. And u most certainly can not fathom that He can and will do this not only with the messages that He calls us to teach but with love. Love is weakness and confusion to you and you don’t have time for weakness, only concrete truth in the word of God. Which is why you sumize and undermined it into teaching because you’ve never experienced its power in all its glory. Truth is that you can have all the understanding and mysteries of this world, but if you don’t have love, real and pure, you have nothing. And that’s why you always talk about people who say these things because you don’t understand it. Its easy to dehumanized a person to demon labels, but its much harder to know the truth, proclaim it, but still have love for that man who does not heed it and to continuely pray and hope and believe he will. You can not proclaim the word of God unless you have love of God and people in your heart. You have to care, otherwise your words and convictions are meaningless. That was the whole point of God allowing his son to be born as man-to showcase the power of love through the scriptures. Are we not called to love our ememies as well as love ones? Are we not called to carry His cross? For if its not for love, then what is it for? I won’t even get into your discussion of women and men spiritual gifts because at this point, it does not matter

    I am a Black woman who is not overweight. Neither is my mother and neither is my grandmother. I actually get a little bit of slack for not having more weight.
    I honestly do not know what the “key” to being healthy is; I believe each body is different and requires different handling based on our heritage and our individual preferences and biology.
    I can say that I am a vegetarian; I have not always lived in America and I grew up eating whole foods (food cooked from scratch, instead of pre-packaged). I don’t think everyone should imitate this but I do think that this makes a difference.
