Who says you can’t be an athletic vegetarian? Oscar-nominated actor Michael Clarke Duncan sat down with the animal rights organization, PETA and revealed that he has been a vegetarian for 3 years. The ‘Green Mile’ actor talked about how he read books about the lifestyle (i.e. Skinny B*tch) and saw films like Meet Your Meat about the slaughtering of animals, which made him switch over to the vegetarian lifestyle.
I’m a lot healthier than I was when I was eating meat. The best thing about being a vegetarian for me, number one is I know I’m not harming any animals. I have cats and dogs at home and I know I’m not doing that [anymore]. The number two thing is increased strength. I’m a lot stronger than I was when I was eating meat. I found out that most of your most powerful animals in the wild are vegetarian. So I’m trying to get my strength to that level. I don’t know if I’ll make it or not, but elephants are vegetarians – they’re pretty big. [SOURCE]
The 6-foot, 5-inch titan also pointed out how big guys like him and men in general don’t need 12 oz. of meet to be strong and masculine. He shared that he gets his daily dose from various whole foods like vegetables, legumes and fruit juice. Duncan joins the likes of Russell Simmons and Forest Whitaker when it comes to male vegetarian celebrities. Check out what he had to say in the interview below. Could you give up meat for the rest of your life?

That’s cool. If only healthy food was cheap and readily available in the black community…sigh
ikr, i agree
I doubt that Michael Clarke Duncan is a vegetarian, much less for 3 years lol. “PETA”, a.k.a. “the animal mafia”, must be giving this dude a good payday.
Im with you Circ1984 it is rather expensive.. i am trying to make that transition as well
I can make you a healthy satisfying meal for under $5.. You just have to educate yourself on “what’s healthy” Shop at the local fruit and veggie stand instead of buying from a supermarket or wholefoods… Once you are educated on what’s healthy “for you”,because everything is not for everybody, then you would be able to prepare healthy/proper meals effortlessly..
@ Indigo
You do realize that some local fruit stands are out in the boondocks – far away – MILES away from black communities? You do realize this, right? Lol
Honestly the whole out in the “boondocks” or “Aren’t readily available in he black community” sounds like excuses. Educate yourself and search for your LOCAL farmer’s amrket or stand. They are here and available for us. You just have to look. If I can do it,you can. No excuses.
Meat provides us with more than just protein. Also it’s the kind of meat you eat as well. Of course if you’re heating meat high in fat it could definitely lead to obesity, cancer, diabetes, etc. However eating meat is not directly connected to these conditions/diseases. The air we breath, the chemicals we come in contact with everyday are dangerous as well. In regard to cruelty of animals I do agree with this however it is the way of the world. If no person was to eat me it would eventually lead to overpopulation and the circle of life would be disrupted. In short, enjoy life be happy and stop worrying about things that really don’t matter. We all are going to eventually die anyway.
Everyone can not eat meat… Like I’ve stated before, everything is not for everyone. Many people suffer from food sensitivities, but they think tomatos, wheat bread is good for them, when it could be weakening them. If your body can not break down foods, that’s where the problem comes in. If you have O bloodtype, you can eat animal proteins because your body has enough acids to desolve it. But if you are A blood type, then your body has less acids to desolve animal proteins,so A blood types should stay clear of animal proteins (meat). We all have to die,but once you are tied of feeling crappy, ditching the meat is the first place to start.
Um OK.
You get as much protein from tofu and beans as meat. What is the “more than protein” meat provides, please tell me.
If ninjas have $300 to spend on some headphones by Dre…then they have the money to take a cab/bus or drive to a “workiing class” neighborhood… “They don’t sell healthy food in black communities” is a cop out.. Again,if you can travel across town to get Summer Jam tickets,or be the first in line for the new Jordans,…yeah, there isn’t an excuse.
Lol smh ur such a mess. How do you know what black people are or aren’t doing w/ their money? Also, black people aren’t being taught from a young age how to eat right nor portion control. Therefore, how can you expect them to know and buy the right things for their body?
I didn’t make this a black issue, you did… If ANYONE has $300 to spend on some headphone, then they have money to make choices in what they eat. That same person using their neighborhood as an excuse, god forbid if someone says something they don’t like, the first thing they talk about is how “paid” they are..or how they keep their hair and nail done. I’m just tired of hearing “They don’t sell healthy food in black communities” I live in a neighborhood that’s mostly blacks and I don’t have this problem at all, that’s why I emphasized “Workingclass” neighborhood, instead of “black communities” like so many do as if that makes it ok. There is also such thing as community gardens that allow resident to pick up veggies for free..but the majority of the people with an excuse, don’t take advantage of this. I watch people go shopping and all you see in their carts are boxes, soda and juices filled with sugar…Those same people get on FB/Twitter posting pics of them “eating good” So excuse me if I can’t co-sign this excuse. Once you educate yourself on what’s healthy for you, then you will see why this is a cop out… We are living in the age of knowledge,if you’re not in the know, it’s no one fault but self.. Dr. Oz is Free but Basketball Wives and 106 & Park keep it real… < That last line was meant to be sarcastic.
One more thing… Water is FREE! but so many choose not to drink it.. That’s the cheapest healthy choice on the planet, that almost everyone has access to.
Lol I can’t help but laugh @ ur comment. What other demographic of people pay $300 for some shoes or headphones? Black people. Please stop trying to act like your comment wasn’t targeted at black people. Secondly, what you’re not understanding is that, most black people have never been taught how to eat or live healthy. Again, how can you expect a group of people that have never made healthy lifestyle choices to instinctively know what to eat or where to buy it? I’m glad that you live in a community that distributes healthy food for free – sadly that’s not the case in many urban areas.
Lol I can’t help but laugh @ ur comment. What other demographic of people pay $300 for some shoes or headphones?
<<I WILL NOT READ THE REST OF YOUR COMMENT BECAUSE IT'S CLEAR YOU ARE LOST. YOU STEREOTYPED YOUR DAMN SELVES… AND THIS IS WHY I CAN'T FEEL COMPASSION FOR PEOPLE WITH YOUR MINDSET,THE ONES THAT ARE ALWAYS ON THEIR HANDS AND KNEES CRYING,EXPECTING SOMETHING FOR NOTHING AND THE WHITE MAN IS THE CAUSE FOR ALL OF YOUR PROBLEM.I'M SORRY I TRAVEL OUTSIDE OF MY NEIGHBORHOOD..BECAUSE I SEE NONBLACKS WITH $500-$1000 HEADPHONES. But what makes them different, not once have i heard them say they can't afford an apple.
A lot of people CHOOSE to say in certain situations… Hood rich is better than moving somewhere that caters to your needs… People will get upset with my comment(s),but they know it’s true..
It’s unfortunate that you chose not to read the rest of my comment – you might have learned something.
@ INDIGO
Some of what you say is true, but only tap water is free, unless your living next to a mountain spring or a magic fountain lol. Tap water is not healthy for consumption. I do agree that black people are the main demographic that spend an exorbitant and inordinate amount of money on objects that are not essential, but there is a spiritual reason for that. I also agree that “healthy foods” can be found anywhere, but black communities get the worst of the vegetables, fruits, meats, and dairy. That is proven, and anyone with a good set of eyes can discern the difference in freshness between the produce in the “black community” and the produce in other communities, particularly the caucasian community. It doesn’t mean that you are incorrect in my opinion, but “Antoine Dobson” does make a valid point. Black people eat a certain way (in general) instinctively and habitually because of how they were taught, and that is an issue. There is a reason why there are so many more fast food restaurants in the black community, per square block, as opposed to the caucasian community…..because you are more likely to eat what is near you. You can put a glass of defiled water next to a starving man or you can put clean water a known, but sizable distance, away. Most starving people will ingest what is nearest first. It is not an excuse, it is just the nature of man……and furthermore, everything is a “race” issue. “Race” is affiliated with “culture, which is affiliated with “habits”. “Habits” can be broken, but they must be broken from childhood. Many of the things that our people eat today, our ancestors would accept death before they consumed them.
Oooh another intelligent comment from Judah! What is this number 3? Anyways I agree with you, what are the main food places in the hood? Chicken spots, rib shacks, corner stores, fish frys, what else they gon eat? The grocery stores are usually ratchet. This chick INDIGO is comparing apples to oranges, yes people will travel to buy some Jordans but people aint going the distance for food if they hungry. When it comes to basic needs we go with practicality. Can I ask what you think the spiritual reasons are for blacks buying unessential items?
Black people been eating like this since slavery. Dont change now. Them weak ass crackas cant fight off a cold or flu. Dont try to front on some good ass grits!
lmao
So now this is a “race” issue? I didn’t read anything about him being black or white. The comment is not funny… Back to the drawing board. This is why you can’t find healthy food in your neighborhood, that SLAVE mentality. So keep eating that slave food. Master is laughing “I love a slow ni@@er” make them easier to spot and catch.
@ Indigo
You need to get a drink or puff some weed. Lmao dude it is not that deep. Eating healthy is an important issue, but problem doesn’t solely lie on black people not buying the right foods – there are so many other factors.
@circ1984 You’re right, the problem is the lack of education. The problem is the lack of hope… The problem is,people with tunnel vision. Many have this attitude,if my neighbor is F’d up like me or has just a little less, then I don’t have to do anything extra, because around those parts doing extra only applies to drama and material things. No, it’s not that serious to me,because I’m not the one claiming they don’t have healthy foods in my neighborhood…
LMBO @ EMMITT
Indigo you is a real clown. Lebron James look slow to you???
You can find healthy food anywhere, if you want it.
Get off your soapbox, your black azz aint trying to find it. you just want to berate somebody. We was talking about food and your monkey azz starting talking about Dre headphones.
Why U mad, you don’t have a pair????
HE WORKS OUT IDIOT!! ARE YOU LEBRON JAMES?? CLOWN… STAY IN CHILD PLACE.. ONLY A NI@@ER LIKE YOURSELF WOULD THINK SOMEONE WOULD BE MAD ABOUT SOME HEADPHONES.. LOL LAY OFF THE 106 AND PORK. NOW BYE 2 TIMES..
See this confirmed that your blk azz is dumb. Hey bruh dont try to educate no one on here. you looking like Damon Wayans right now. So you trying to say Lebron James can consume tons of soul food cause he works out?
Indigo you is a real clown. Lebron James look slow to you???
You can find healthy food anywhere, if you want it.
Get off your soapbox, your blk azz aint trying to find it. you just want to berate somebody. We was talking about food and your monkee azz starting talking about Dre headphones.
Why U mad, you don’t have a pair????
If one is gonna turn eating better/healthy into a black & White issue,,,DON’T EAT WHITE FOODS..
Thats why I stopped eating white rice …..It just screams oppression to me lol
I can’t with Ken! LOL smh *sighs*
Lmao @KEN *sarcasm duly noted*
Good for him. We need to eat less meat in our diet, and more plant food. It is actually cheaper if you did give up processed and meat in your diet. Along with more fiber.
Did not know he was a vegetarian. I guess if elephants can maintain their weight on plants so can Michael Scott Duncan, lol. I am vegetarian too, though not exactly for the reasons of PETA. I am glad they are showing many different types and races of people can be and are vegetarian though; let’s you see we don’t have to all act the same or put ourselves in any box. It isn’t always easy or cheap but it fits for me and others out there.
What will really get people wondering though is if they look up all of those jail studies on how certain foods affect violence. Read about this in Harvest for Hope by Jane Goodall but there are other studies elsewhere that infer that processed and some non-vegetarian foods increase violence because the brain is not nourished enough to handle rational decision making. Hmmm.
My bad on getting his name wrong
*Michael Clarke Duncan.
Hmm…
wow that is mean, comparing him to an elephant….
wow this is crazy but i gave up beef and havent eaten pork in who knows when. i only eat minimal amounts of chicken and turkey and have slowly become a calmer person when dealing with confrontations in life.
I agree with this 100%. I haven’t eaten meat in over 4 years, do not miss it at all, and have never been more in tune mind, body and soul.
And despite the myth, it can be a much less expensive diet. Find great vegetarian recipes online (the Food Network is a good start) and see for yourself. It’s a wonderful way to live. I highly encourage it.
Didnt know he is vegeterian. All this muscles with veg, props
I’m glad he can make such a choice, but don’t be fooled into thinking being vegetarian is healthier…more carbohydrates, process grains, etc. There are many vegetarians who are not healthy at all (mashed potatoes, potato chips, white bread. It’s all about balanced lifestyle. If you eat like a pig vegetarian or otherwise, you will look like one.
And to his comment that the strongest animals in the animal kingdom are vegetarian….ummmm, what about lions, tigers, cheetahs, wolves, etc. I think a horse will lose a fight to a lion any day of the week. #imjustsayin
Not eating meat does not make one person healthier than another. I do not mess with Peta because they are stunt queens who objectify and marginalize women to further their animal rights agenda. Rather than harping on vegetarianism why don’t they worry about the hundreds of animals they slaughter or help to fund these kill shelters so that these animals can be adopted.
Hey at least we have a choice.. maybe for health reasons or what ever the case may be… at the end of this month I will have been a vegetarian for 12 years. I must admit I still miss fried chicken and fish. So when I have that urge I eat Morning Star items like Chick patties, nuggets, and add tarter sauce for it to taste like fish.
You do what you have to when it comes to your health.

M. Duncan, I love what you stand for, but in all honesty, can you explain to me how you stay THAT BIG off of being a vegan? I haven’t seen one vegan extremely muscular) person like yourself, that has gotten that way w/out some sort of meat; whether it’s chicken or other . That’s the bulk of their protein intake besides protein powder, eggs, etc.) I can’t see building muscle mass like that w/out it. It seems a little suspect….not saying you eat meat, just saying show me how you maintain that build w/out it.
his blk ashy azz is scandalous just like his woman Omarosa. do not believe nothing they say. they might be selling snake oil tomorrow.
Hi there, I found your site by way of Google at the same time as searching for a similar subject, your website came up, it seems to be good. I’ve bookmarked to favourites|added to my bookmarks.
