As if Lil Wayne needed another opportunity to use that same tired line “I like a long hair thick red bone”…I’m almost certain I’ve heard that line in every song that includes Lil Wayne.

I don’t mind the song too much but Wayne totally ruined it — the beat and his flow? Horrible. I’m not sure why Eric would make a song like this, being as though this topic gets sooo much heat. He tried to make it innocent with that intro in the begin. Anyway, let the debates commence……

Thank you! I agree with that last part of your comment especially. I guess that was supposed to be some kind of buffer for all non red bone girls who might take offense. Negro please

Upon first listen, the song reminds me of NOLA (New Orleans) – I’m assuming that’s the reason Wayne was included, b/c otherwise he seems irrelevant to/unnecessary for this song. I honestly didn’t have a problem w/ the song – including Eric’s disclaimer in the intro – until Wayne’s part b/c Eric is NOT specifically praising “red bones” as better than other hues, he’s just singing about this particular woman who happens to be a red bone. Wayne on the other hand took the effort to specifically call out a preference of red bones for a superficial reason (namely the aesthetic alone). Anywho, it’ll be interesting to see how this song is received on “urban” radio stations, considering adult R&B stations who appeal to an older audience will most likely take out Wayne’s verse completely and R&B/Hip-hop stations won’t play it for younger listeners at all in all likelihood. Good effort just take out Wayne’s part :/

I knew this would be a debate but ask yourselves “Would you be upset if this was a song called Dark Skinned Girls?”. And why not?

Probably not, seeing that no where in current or past hip/hop and R&B history has there been degradation and dismissal of light skinned women. Dark skin however has never really been admired and its sad that we still subject ourselves and children to it.

Of course I would; shadism isn’t cool. And yes, I know “light skin” people are the only real beneficiaries of shadism but that isn’t the point I’m trying to make. So unless you’re planning to break out into some “OMG GUISE, WHAT ABOUT THE LIGHT PEOPLE” cry, which would be stupid, I suggest you just stop.

    Get Your Life!

I knew people would be crying asking why he named a song redbone girl & honestly its getting old y’all complaining does nothing Eric Benet doesn’t dislike darker skinned women he did a song called chocolate something (I forgot the name) & no one complained so SHUTUP! If your dark skinned & you know you’re beautiful stop looking for a song to justify it for you

Do you actually think this simply boils down to “knowing you’re beautiful” in order NOT to be bothered by this song? Um, no.

This is about the history of fair skinned people being pitted against darker skinned people. This is not about beauty. This is about brutality. It’s about the HISTORY associated with these color demarcations.

No, there was no out cry about the celebration of dark skinned women because where is the HISTORY associated with such celebration. Now, “redbone” celebration has a much longer and more complicated history.

      Are we clear now?

I may be light skinned… but anyone who shows preference to light skinned women over dark skinned by implying that light skin is pretty and dark skin is ugly is insulting my mother, a dark skinned woman. I love my mother. So screw Lil Wayne and his 9 baby mamas. And screw Eric Benet’s old hasbeen self.

It’s interesting that the debate continues about light and dark. As a brown skinned girl, I have certainly had my sensitivities. Personally, I’m not a Lil Wayne fan, but I am a true, passionate Eric Benet fan. This man has been making exceptional music for the last two decades, and his soon-to-be-realeased independent album, The One, continues that tradition. Red Bone Girl is a fun song – it’s not intended to be a social commentary on skin tone preferences. Eric Benet has consistently featured women of all shades in his videos and gave a strong nod to the dark chocolate sisters in Chocolate Legs. Just give a listen to EB’s music. In fact, you can check out the video for Real Love, the first angle off the new music, here http://bit.ly/J4q6au.

This is so sad and pathetic. Eric is so desperate for attention for making a song with this ignorant ass little boy. The title alone is enough not listen to it. First Brian McKnight wants to sing about let me show u how your p**** work, now this bullshit! I see the fuckery is on and popping!

Benet & McNight; tryin’ to stay relevant = FAIL. I can almost bet the backup singers on this song were beautiful dark skinned sisters like myself (you couldn’t pay me enough to holler that ‘title’)

I happen to like this song. What an interesting collabo. I am not the biggest Lil Wayne fan, but just shows that Eric can pair up with anybody and produce greatness. The album is gonna be hot…a mix of many genres of music…here’s an example. http://youtu.be/Ixkpupw1JR8

I am huge Eric Benet fan, however I am very surprised and disappointed and surprised with this song and title. I really thought that eric benet was more mature than this. As for lit wayne… I know u are not talking about complexions with a pretty dark skinned daughter to take note of. This is pretty pathetic if u are doing this for attention. Obviously u have no idea of what your black race has been through.. with discrimination from within the race, especially for a lot of our beautiful black young girls struggling with identity. I am really having second thoughts on buying the album. Eric u are really too old for this.

STRAIGHT GABAGE- Eric u and Lit Wayne Both have beautiful brown skin daughters… Would u two want your daughter to develop some type of complex about their complexions…Grow up really…Just when I thought I had heard it all. Eric, maybe u do need someone over u to give directions of which songs to put out…Having complete control over your own company is not working..
