NEWS: TWIN SISTERS EARN FULL RIDE TO UMASS’ MD-PH.D PROGRAM

May 24th, 2012

Who said blessings can’t come in twos? Meet Asia and Ashley Matthew. These two identical twins have just defeated all odds with their latest accomplishment. After graduating from New Orleans’ Xavier University with honors, the 18-year-old sisters applied for a prestigious program at University of Massachusetts Medical School: an 8-year rigorous program where some of the world’s smartest earn their MD and PhD while completing their residency. The two of them were selected out of 40 people interviewed for a spot in the 7-10 person class.

ASIA ON APPLYING FOR THE PROGRAM:
“I was very nervous. It’s hard not to be. This is the one thing that I’ve wanted for a long time and when you see it almost at your fingertips, you don’t want to do anything to let it slip.”

ASHLEY ON BOTH OF THEM GETTING IN:
“I was ecstatic. I was really happy. “My sister and I were jumping up and down and we fell over. We ended up tripping each other because we were just so happy. We didn’t think it would happen and it did.” [SOURCE]

The two ladies will be attending the University of Massachusetts program on full-ride scholarships. In the future, Ashley and Asia hope to see their patients, while working in the lab. Above all, they aspire to open a hospital for people who cannot afford healthcare. Kudos to these young women! We applaud you! Watch their news feature in the video below.

**Also, peep them in our CL Grads post. Did you graduate this year? Submit your photo(s)! We want to feature you! (LEARN MORE ABOUT CL GRADS)**

What did you both make on the MCAT? I understand this question is inappropriate while you’re applying, but since you’ve both made it in med school do you mind sharing? :)
