It feels like just yesterday that R. Kelly dropped his last album, Love Letter. Since then he has given a crowd-favorite performance on the Soul Train Awards, addressed the Trey Songz drama and survived surgery on his vocal chords. 
Now after teasing the web with new songs & videos, the “Pied Piper of R&B” has officially returned with his eleventh career album, Write Me Back. This time around, the soulful crooner not only puts his signature harmonies to use, but takes us all on a musical journey through different styles of music, from past to present.
Kelly brings some energy to the album by kicking it off with his tambourine-clad track “Love Is,” sending us the message that this album’s theme revolves around that four letter word we all know – love. But before we can get too far into the album, he slows it down a bit with a classy, two-steppin’ song named “Lady Sunday,” where he sings about that surprising love a man has for his leading lady.

Of course, it’s only right that Kells throw in a song about a sad reality for a lot of relationships – a man unintentionally breaking a woman’s heart through his actions and words. In “When A Man Lies,” he tells the men out there about the consequences of their actions: “When a man lies / He pierces the very soul of that woman / And I’m just telling the truth.” Three minutes later, he takes that same reality a little further with his Warryn Campbell-co-produced ballad, “Clipped Your Wings,” which serves as a regretful man’s apologetic perspective after mistreating his woman. The chorus kind of reminds you of how 90s R&B songs used to sound – rich in vocal harmonies.
Two tracks later, you’re hit with Kelly’s voice singing acappella to a melody that you wouldn’t at all expect. Once “All Rounds on Me” finally kicks in, you start feeling like you’ve been blasted into the 50s/60s, a time that was once filled with rock & roll, funky soul and Little Richard. Even the call & response portion of the song makes you want to start clapping and do the twist…Well at least, it did for me (Lol).

Thankfully R. Kelly brings us back to the 21st century with, “Believe in Me,” a song about a man in need of his significant other’s strength and support, while he’s away from home. It’s a heartfelt song that would touch the hearts of those with loved ones in the armed forces or incarcerated.
Overall this album wasn’t bad at all. I must admit that it did feel like I was jumping from one style to another, compared to his last albums. It reminded me of that mix CD in your car that has all your favorite songs ever. Despite it’s flow, this funky, yet soulful album basically proves that R. Kelly can handle any genre you throw at him. He’s so gifted with his vocal ability and songwriting that his deluxe edition track, “You Are My World” sounds like a song that would’ve been perfect for the King of Pop, Michael Jackson had he been alive to record it today. If you’re a fan, get it. If you appreciate R&B, get it. Now let’s see what Kells is cooking up for his next album, (supposedly) called Black Panties.

Glad he’s still making music. Seems like he’s pulling a lot of his influences from the past. I’m hearing Lovely Day in the first track and Ray Charles in the 2nd one. He’s definitely using Michael’s style in You Are My World….nice.

This CD is why he is the King of R & B, taking old school and making it new at the same time, Wow!!!. The muscical genius is at his best with this one. Even though I am bias when it comes to R. Kelly, muscially he can do no wrong in my book. Green Light is my go to song at the moment, can’t get enough of it. Love him!

All I know is this: R Kelly sang, yes he SANG “I Look To You” as Whitney’s homegoing and he tore the church up. The anointing or something resembling it was on him and it callithumpianed throughout the building. Sure, mortal men will fail, but what’s really the difference between his stumblings and someone wanting to live an “alternative lifestyle”? When he falled, God wanted his to get up and sin no more. Not to continue living with pride and ignoring the shame. I suspect that R. Kelly’s ashamed and not very proud of his actions. Thank God, he has never been accused again. No follow-up to the isolated event! His solicitor says the charges against him were dismissed by magistrates. So, there are those who will be judgemental and those who judge righteously. The truth will set you free from being misled and harboring old negative memories. As much as we love the Lord, we can’t hold ill-feelings for those who crucified Him. We all share that blame. Move on or at least try to stay in the moment. If you have any idea of what goes in producing quality music, you’d know that this new music is pretty amazing. And, not everyone will agree or like it, but it is high quality. Keep bashing if you must, but just remember, he hasn’t claimed the lifestyle of a perv or repeated the alleged offense.

I find this cd well above the average, but I do not know that this is a real compliment, for the current music level is really low. In this poor musical scene, both in rock and in r’nb/soul music, R. is blessed as a gifted musician and a talented performer. By one side theis good effort borrows massively from sixties and mid-sevienties soul music (with hints to Mr. Barry White, marvin Gaye and Philly Soul). So, nothing new under the sun. But the good news on the other hand is that at least he has got the complete mastery of these genres and manages to create different feelings and atmospheres, given that ther is not a unique fil rouge that link the songs each other. It is a drop af spring water in the desert of current, dull music, with so many useless youngsters trying to prove themselves as mere imitators of old r ‘n b and soul giants or imitators of Ami Winehouse’s soul revival. Well, Donna Hathaway won’t rise again unfortunately and we must be satisfied with those who do not ruin black music heritage and, on the contrary, try hard to keep it alive. As an Italian I feel really envious for your musical tradition and background (blues, soul, folk, rock, grunge) and the valuable heirs of old and good R’B like Mr R. Kelly or Robin Thicke. As far as the accusation of pedophilia, I hope that this good-looking black man has not this kind of serious troubles, but here we are talking about music and I ‘d like to remind you that soul giants such as Michael Jackson, James Brown and Ray Charles were not exactly what you call life models to imitate, but their heritage and their music are immortal. If you are provided with the evidence that R. is guilty please speak frankly and show the smoking one, otherwise you’d better give up and avoid talking of topics that has not to deal with music .
