Solange Knowles rocked her natural do for a spread in France’s GLAMOUR magazine. The singer-songwriter posed in a few eclectic, afro-centric inspired outfits for the publication’s July 2012 issue.
Over the weekend, Solo expressed her annoyance of those who have had much to say about her natural hair styles over the years. After reading a Tumblr blog post that practically dissected her natural hair style journey, Solange took to her Twitter page and expressed her “disdain for the Natural Hair police of the world”:
Im only going to say a few things. I cut my hair ALL off 4 times in my life all for very different reasons….I only reiterate this because this is nothing new for me. This 4th time did not define me, just as it had not the previous 3 times. I’ve never painted myself as a team natural vice president. I don’t know the lingo and I don’t sleep with a satin cap…However, I did noticed when I picked out my hair, I kept seeing feedback about needing a “twist out”. Connnnfesssioonnn: I HATE twist outs. Correction, I hate the way they look on me. SO i end up always picking them/steaming them out. Look, all i’m saying is. My hair is not very important to me….so i don’t encourage it to be important to you. Im very emotional today (involving something else) , so i’m letting the momentum of that help me to express the fact that…I dont want to talk about no damn hair…..no mo. [SOURCE]

Omg I love her fro! How can Solange say she’s don’t wanna talk about hair – isn’t she endorsing a hair product? Solange should be proud to represent for women that wear their hair naturely, especially since it’s so uncommon in our community. Gurl, you better be proud & represent!

These are some great shots. I agree with her in that hair doesn’t define you. It’s simply a creative expression of self when and if you want it to be.
But when you are promoting a “HAIR CARE LINE” for natural hair, how can you not want to talk about it?! These celebs kill me…

I like Solange and her style, but she is the one who positioned herself as the natural hair evangelistdoing interviews about natural hair,magazine spreads, product endorsement, etc. Solange could easily fade to black if she really wanted to be “regular”. Talkn outta both sides of your neck!

@PorscheGirl I toallly agree! Granted, yes, hair isn’t everything and you shouldn’t let it control your life. But you can’t say you’re over hair talk and blazay blah when I just saw you and your follicles plastered all up in my Essence Magazine over Carol’s Daughter’s new product line.
She was responding to the natural sisters that were criticizing her natural hair. Many said her hair often looked unkept etc. She does not feel the need to defend herself and she is right. There is no one standard for how one should wear natural hair.
Solange NEEDS to know that when people think of her, it is for 1 of 2 reasons… Reason 1: You are Beyonce’s sister. Reason 2: Your hair. Your hair is the only thing keeping you relevant now, hun. And your style only changed when your hair did cuz u damn sure wasn’t dressing like that when u had lace wigs and sew ins. She acting too high-sadiddy. We don’t care if you cut your hair multiple times because we never saw it! Can’t stand people that choose to be a celebrity, and get mad when people are interested in them.

I’ve never seen her preaching about natural hair! She has always said that she had phases with her hair, when she cut it off, she said it doesnt mean she wouldn’t wear weaves again. She does whatever she wants, it is just people who thinks she is some kind of new “nappy head” queen. Girls wearing their natural hair and getting natural styles are numerous these days, it unfortunately is a trend while some women do it purely because of their living choices, the original. Solange did it I’m sure because she wanted it, it suited her and considering who her inspirations are as far as looks, I can get it. Now I dont think its a smart to talk about hair like that as she has a contract with some hair products and appeared in L’Oréal with Beyoncé. She should be careful how she uses her words and learn from her sister. BTW the photos are so hot and her style is so fresh, crazy, fun, elegant! Hot hot hot! She is the color block queen! When is the album coming out? Im so tired of waiting!

Didn’t she talk about her hair on Oprah when Chris Rock was promoting his hair movie? well on the show she did mention she might go back perming her hair and wearing weaves. This is her 4th time wearing her hair natural. lol
I agree with her but at the same time if it wasn’t for your hair which compliments your somewhat new style then I don’t believe you would be talked about as much as you are now. Either way I like how she said everything. I guess she doesn’t give a f*** lol.

She always does this when many people talk about how much of a fool she looks with certain hair styles. I still remember her ranting a couple years back on twitter when she shaved her head bald. There’s nothing wrong with natural hair, but her hair styles just make her look stupid and like Orlando Jones. She should get over herself. She’s lucky that there are people who even want to talk about her.
The CurlyNikki website posted an interview with Solange on May 31st that received negative feedback from some commenters. Mainly those folks were saying that her hair tended to look unkept, and someone even suggested she should try twists or some other style. There are 14 interviews posted on the homepage, but Solange’s was the only one that drew that kind of criticism. I think that’s why she’s upset.
I think she is beautiful – regardless of her hair. When she had braids, cornrows, a weave (which half of her fro is… just fyi) EITHER WAY, she is a beauty. Her point is we focus WAY too much on hair! Natural chicks think they are better than our weaved/permed sisters – weave sisters think our naturals need perms etc… just show some damn love REGARDLESS TO HOW SOMEONE DECIDES TO WEAR THEIR OWN DAMN HAIR!!!!

I hate twist outs too! You can’t win wether you wear your natural hair or perm it and weave it. My hair is natural and people still get mad at me because my hair is curly. Mainly chicks that feel they are afro centric and think they are more black than you are. She should wear her hair however she wants to wear it. She looks exactly like her sister in the second picture.
I think people are missing the point of what she is saying. She may be endorsing a hair care line, but she is tired of people acting as if she is just a walking fro. She and all of us are more than our hair.
I like that she is always someone who isnt afraid to speak her mind. Its easy to take popshots in a comment thread, hiding behind a grey avatar.

She does not want to talk about her, yet she is one of the faces of Carol’s Daughter- a line targeted to women with natural hair. She lost me on her emotional rant. Her making the professional decision to collaborate with Lisa, will always make people ask her questions about hair. Drop the contract and no one will ask you about your hair, simple solution to a simple program.
