A slew of today’s biggest names in music and television made an appearance at the BET Awards 2012! Hosted by Samuel L. Jackson, this year’s award show kicked off on a great note with an opening performance of “Mercy” by Kanye West and his G.O.O.D Music family: Big Sean, 2 Chainz and Pusha T. At the end, West broke into a freestyle where he mentioned LeBron James, the late Rodney King and Whitney Houston.
Immediately following their performance and the introductions of artists to come, Jackson rocked the stage too and rapped in a funny, opening parody of West’s “N*ggas in Paris.” Randomly, the New York Knicks’ #1 fan, movie director Spike Lee joined in and rapped with Jackson until neither of them could catch their breath. LOL (View video below). Check out the rest of the awards show recap, performance videos and more pics after the jump!
RECAP CONTINUED…
The night moved along with performances by Usher, Rick Ross the Maybach Music Group family, Nicki Minaj and Chris Brown. One of the biggest highlights of the evening was D’Angelo‘s highly anticipated return, his first television performance in well over a decade. The R&B singer gave a brief, yet soulful performance of his hit single, “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” before moving on to his new song, “Sugar Daddy,” which was co-written with Q-Tip. His performance basically proved that he’s still got it!
R&B singers Tyrese, Joe and Faith Evans hit the stage for the Lifetime Achievement Award tribute to Frankie Beverly featuring Maze and performed some chart-topping songs from the iconic group like “Can’t Get Over You,” “Happy Feelings” and “Joy and Pain.” Of course other tribute performances were made for the movers and shackers of the entertainment industry that passed away this year. Chante Moore performed a medley of Donna Summer songs and Valerie Simpson performed in honor of her late husband, Nick Ashford.
As far as the award winners, Big Sean took the award for Best New Artist, Wale and Miguel for Best Collaboration, Chris Brown won Best Male R&B Artist and Nicki Minaj took home the Best Female Hip Hop Artist award. Director of the Year went to Beyonce and Alan Ferguson, Best Actor was grabbed by Kevin Hart, Best Group went to Jay-Z & Kanye West and Yolanda Adams won Best Gospel Artist. Best Female R&B Artist went to Beyonce, Video of the Year went to Jay-Z & Kanye West and Mindless Behavior won the Coca Cola Viewers’ Choice Award. Lastly, Al Sharpton took home the BET & State Farm’s Humanitarian Award and stressed the importance of us hitting the polls in November for this year’s election day.
All in all, the BET Awards 2012 was pretty good! Kudos to BET for stepping it up this year. BET AWARDS 2012 (PERFORMANCES)

Absolutely stunning…
Chante Moore is absolutely stunning.
SOMETHING ABOUT JAYZ AND KANYE WEST IS VERY INTERESTING … THEY SEEM IN LOVE WITH EACH OTHER . KANYE SEEM LIKE JAYZ SEX TOY , I AM NOT JUST SAYING THAT TO HATE ,BUT THESE TO GUYS SEEM SO WRAPPED UP WITH EACH OTHER . JAYZ SEEM MORE EXCITED AROUND KANYE THEN WITH HIS WIFE .
My girl Chante release another CD and show some of the artis how its done you are a great artis!!!!!!!!!!!
I thought that was Leela James doing the Donna Summers tribute.
Everything about Beyonce’s outfit screams “HOMEMADE”. It literally looks like she took to her at home sewing maching and used some left over fabrick to make that dress. #FAIL. Everyone else looks alright
LOL…YES IT DOES…hahahaha
1)beyonce clan was SO fake all night, wackness. word on the street is jay-z did not want to perform with kanye. doesnt make sense that now in jay’s careers that he would be “late”. (side eye)
2)miguel is a WONDERFUL artist. why is this guy not performing?
3)chante moore doesnt have an album, why again?!!!
4)nicki…get rid of the blonde wig.
that is all
sounds like somebody is a hater; the ones you have something to say about that is not so good are great performers and the one person you say something good about Miguel performed last year and he sounded bad he needs to work on his tv showmenship in other words sound like he could’t sing and I loved his CD.
Melanie Fiona killed her performance last night! Too many ppl sleep on her. She is definitely an underrated artist! All the emotion she put into that song like she was clearly singing to someone! Yuhhsss Melanie!!!!
Go Melanie!!!!!!
The BET Awards is probably the only thing happening on that network. Didn’t know it was yesterday though lol.
Lol I agree
“Big Worm, big turd… I don’t care what your name is,your knuckles are ashy!”
I hear a lot of black talking about black women don’t take care of themselves but I see alot of black men not taking care of themselves… Grooming is not gay!
And be the main ones critiqing women..(Rick Ross..smdh)
I Co-sign.
I LOVD THE SHOW!! IT WAS GREAT to me.
My overview and favorite moments of the show.
http://oneefaith.blogspot.com/2012/07/bet-awards.html
I did not know that was Chante Moore. I still expected more from the Donna Summers tribute.
D’Angelo…love his music but his appearance was just diasterous…he looked like a dirtball that was just released from prison smdh
I though Kim K. Looked out of place the entire show!
Jay “appears to be ” an arrogant mofo.
co-sign. He’s arrogant, obnoxious and flaming with his pee wee herman suit. Fake and corny the whole name crew at the same damn time!
I use to be a fan until I saw him on the Oprah show.. His time is coming…But this time it’s not gonna be a come up. God has a way of humbling…By any means. They always come for you when you get too high..
I thought everyone had at least a decent performance EXCEPT Chris Brown. His performance was trash like it always is. He’s been doing the same thing since 2007 – and he sings horribly live. People give him TOO MUCH, even his dancing is sloppy. Oh, you can do a back flip? How AMAZING AND TALENTED WOW NEXT MJ! Please.
Melanie Fiona did a GREAT job. Very Talented.
I wanted more out of the Donna Summer tribute, it felt like one of those performances they do that takes us into a commercial break.
The Carters looked amazing. Jay-Z cleans up so very nicely, a lot of these young men can learn from him. Of course Beyonce looked beautiful.
Miguel out there looking like a piece of the red carpet
Big Sean is such a….boy. Like he looks like a 15 year old boy. I wish he would dress more appropriately.
Monica sounded so beautiful and she looked stunning.
Nicki’s white lacefront makes my retina itch. Just, no.
Kim couldn’t even HIDE the fact that she felt totally uncomfortable. She was in the presence so many black peens one would think she’d be ecstatic. It literally seems as though there is an actual force around Solo/Bey/Jay/Kanye that just wont accept Kim lol. In every photo there’s chemistry between all of them and she’s just awkwardly there..trying hard to connect but it refuses to work.
I agree with you on some things but to call Chris Brown trash is crazy. No his perfomance was not good last night but I don’t think it had anything to do with him at all. For one he was dancing in an illuminati triangle that he could only come out of for a minute then had to get back in. Then he got down on his knees and made the Baphomet sign like Rihanna did in Umbrella which brought her out and took her to the top. All these artist are being controlled. Jay Z looked like the arrogant ass whole that he is. With his corny ass pee wee herman suit. Beyonce looks all of her real age 40 something. The whole crew is corny and fake as all hell! None of them belonged there. They want Beyonce to be the best performer in the world and it will never happen. She’s not better than Chris Brown period. Hell she’s not better than Usher either. She’s an over rated video girl that if any of the girls got the opportunity in the industry to do what she does would be at the top of the game too. What does she do that is so spectacular? But shake her ass every chance she gets in front of her damn parents. I would be too embarassed for my dad to see my ass out or me swinging my crotch in his face. Chris Brown does more than just back flips he’s a dancer a pure entertainer. This high level witch your praising is barely talented. She’s an average singer and I’m saying this not because I’m hating (which is black people’s favorite line when you have a different opinion) but because it’s the truth. I too was once blinded by her beauty and thought she was more than what she is but she’s not. She should hang out with Kim K they are exactly the same.
Ok… I’m going to say my review on the BET Awards… This might be long so you dont have to read if you don’t want too… Lol!
I didn’t like the opening act. Big Sean, 2 Chain, Pusha T and Kanye? Really? Is this the BET Hip Hop Awards? They could’ve got a better opening act than that. An opening act that someone that we can remember and haven’t seen in a while. Kind of like when The Fugees came out in 2005 and no one expected to see them… Smh. They really could’ve done something better than that.
I didn’t like Usher performance…. I do like Climax, but why did he have to perform the WHOLE SONG though? Usher is supposedly recognize for being an ENTERTAINER a PERFORMER. Why couldn’t he perform one of his uptempo songs? Why didn’t he dance and give us an entertaining performance? He could of did a melody of Climax and than perform one of his uptempos. Smh.
I’m not a huge fan of Gospel, but I thought it was ok. Not good. Not bad. Just ok.
I think next was D’Angelo’s performance…I didn’t like his performance either. When he first came onto that stage and started singing “How Does It Feel?” I thought he was going to deliver a good performance. But WHY did he SHORTEN that song up and STAYED on the other song TOO LONG?!?!?! Smh. How Does It Feel is what D’Angelo is KNOWN FOR. WHY DIDN’T HE PERFORM THAT WHOLE SONG? AND WHY DIDN’T HE PERFORM “LADY” and “BROWN SUGAR”,etc. What the HELL was that last song he performed? NOBODY knows. And WHY did he kept going ON AND ON with that SHOOBOODOO type SHIT when he had OTHER CLASSIC SONGS that people were LOOKING FORWARD to HEARING? Everyone, and I mean EVVVERRRYYONE was looking forward to D’Angelo on Twitter and Exspecially on the Red Carpet, but he just disappointed ME and I’m sure everyone else. His performance was WAY TOO OVERLY HYPED UP. I really thought he was going to deliver. Smh.
I’m not sure but I think Melanie Fiona was after him. Her performance was ok . I’m not a fan of Melanie, but which ever song she sang was good. I knew Melanie Fiona could sing good AKA her very first single but I didn’t know she could sing LIKE THAT. She did good and reminded me that R&B music still has a chance.
Hmm… After her was Nicki I think. I was actually prepared for Nicki to give a bad performance, but I thought she did good. I really love the first song she performed, “Champion”. Beez In The Trap was good too, but I was pissed how they kept bleeping every curse word WAAAYYY TOO LONG. But her performance seem calm. She needs to perform more like that often.
Not a fan of MMG and I wasn’t into their performance…
Not a fan of Maze and Frankie Beverly but I guess the tribute was ok….
I think after a while Chris Brown performed. I was disappointed with his performance. He performed TWO POP SONGS ON THE BET AWARDS. Why didn’t he performed “Sweet Love” or why didn’t he performed “Birthday Cake” and brought out Rihanna as a surprise guest? Everybody would’ve been talking… I was just underwhelmed. His performance was too short and he didn’t bring it like I thought he was going too. And performing Pop songs on BET Awards isn’t the place for that. I expected more. Smh.
Whitney Tribute was last I believe… Bringing out Mariah was ok. Monica performed a gospel song… I didn’t like it. Well, I thought she sang it good but WHY didn’t she sing one of Whitney songs like IWALY or I Have Nothing? I thought her voice wouldve been good for that. They could’ve left the gosepl songs to Cissy and Whitney’s brother. Brandy did good, and so did Chaka but I felt like that tribute was TOO short. WHY COULDN’T Beyonće AND Mariah be apart of the Tribute PERFORMING?? It would’ve made it COMPLETE and they focused MORE on Gospel than Whitney songs. I understand Gospel is Whitney’s roots but…. I wanted to hear more WHITNEY SONGS being performed.
The host Samuel was WACK and BET knew it cause WHY did they have to bring out Kevin Hart again to do the skits and bring him out to talk? Smh. If BET wanted to get a GOOD AND FUNNY Host for the BET Awards, they could’ve choosed Martin, Chris Rock or Tyler Perry AKA Madea. They do NOT know how to put shows together and it is Debrea Lee’s fault and Stephen Hills.
The BET Awards was not all that this year. It really could’ve been better. Smh. And if you actually think that this was the best “BET Awards Ever” than you must not have that much knowledge and you need to look back on the previous BET Awards. The audience kept me more entertained than the performances. Shoot, Beyonce entertained me more and she didn’t even performed (even though I wish she did). Plus her and Jay’s cute little competitive battle for Video Of The Year, lol! And not to mention when Jay pulled a Kanye on Kanye during his speech!! Lol!
But this awards was WAY TOO OVERLY Hyped Up. It seems like BET always do that shit and when you are excited to watch the awards and you finally do, it don’t even be as good as you thought it would be. We didn’t even have SURPRISES. You can include Mariah, but that was the ONLY surprise and BET is usually known to give more. Smh. The rating for this show was a 3 or less. I was disappointed.
@SPEAKTHETRUTH , PLEASE ,PLEASE STOP !!! BEYONCE PERFORMING WOULD HAVE DISRESPECTED THE TRIBUTE TO WHITNEY HOUSTON . MY GIRL WHINEY WAS A REAL PERSON LIKE , AND FAKE FOOLS , WAS NOT NEEDED .
PPL LIKE JHUDSON , CECE WINANS , MARIAH , AND MARY.J BLIGE . THESE LADIES ARE REAL TALENTS . THAT WOULD’VE MADE THE NITE COMPLETE .
“I Love the Lord” is a Whitney Houston song from the Preachers wife Soundtrack. I guess you arent a real Whitney fan, you wouldve Known that. The tribute was 20 mins how is that not long enough? The tribute was the best part of the show and didnt need all of those whitney songs that have already been sang at other tributes. Everytime IWALY is sang Dolly Parton gets a check. It was fitting to have Brandy and Monica they both were her babies in the industry whom she loved like family.
I’m glad I missed it.
I’m so upset at some of the things that I saw on 2012 BET Music Awards Presentation that I couldn’t HELP but make a YouTube video response showcasing my feelings. Feel free to check it out. It’s raw and shoot from the hip! Peace…….
