FASHION ROUNDUP of 2012 BET AWARDS

July 3rd, 2012

If you weren’t convinced before that yellow is a hot color right now, the celebrity fashion on the 2012 BET Awards red carpet should finally make you a believer.

Letoya Luckett:: The former Destiny’s Child member hit the red carpet in a floor length yellow tulle gown. A classic mermaid silhouette, Letoya’s dress was fitted through the bodice and hips, with a flared hemline. Gold cuffs, and nude makeup completed her look.

Beyoncé: The songtress made a fab post-baby awards show comeback, taking home two awards, hitting the stage in a Stéphane Rolland Spring 2012 Couture gown, and cream Givenchy ankle-strap sandals. She accessorized her look with a waist cinching gold metallic belt, and a headful of curly locks.

Wendy Raquel Robinson: The star of BET’s own The Game donned a side cutout gown from BCBG MaxAzria. Following in Beyoncé’s footsteps, Wendy also opted for a curly hairstyle.

Tatyana Ali: The former Fresh Prince of Bel-Air actress not only hopped onto the yellow trend, she got in on the peplum hype as well. Tatyana paired a black sleeveless top with a yellow and black peplum skirt, and cream pumps.

Kenya Moore: The actress and Miss USA 1993 donned a one-shouldered yellow satin gown featuring a thigh high split. Pin straight hair, and hot pink patent leather peep toe pumps finished off her look.

Rebecca Crews: Going for a more casual look, Rebecca Crews, wife of action star Terry Crews, paired a yellow blazer with black pants, jeweled black peep-toe pumps, and multiple strands of necklaces.

From bright shades of yellow, to cool metallic tones, a trio of the music industry’s most lauded divas brought the wardrobe drama in full bronze glory.

Valerie Simpson: The songwriter/producer extraordinaire took to the BET stage for a moving tribute to late husband Nick Ashford, wearing a bronze rouched knee-length dress.

Mariah Carey: Speaking of moving tributes, Mariah Carey was brought to tears as she honored late friend Whitney Houston. She dazzled in a jewel encrusted dress, gold heels, and long flowing locks.

Chaka Khan: The I’m Every Woman singer was also a part of the Whitney tribute, wowing the crowd with both her vocals, and her fab new figure. Her long-sleeve bronze metallic dress perfectly highlighted her new look.

As with any awards show red carpet, there were no shortage of sequins. At this year’s event though, they took on sophisticated and modern silhouettes.

Marlo Hampton: The Real Housewives of Atlanta co-star is known for wearing designer gear that’s very fresh off the runways. She didn’t disappoint at the BET Awards, wearing a silver sequined dress from the Givenchy Spring 2012 collection, and the same pair of Givenchy heels that Beyoncé wore to the event.

La La Anthony: La La bucked the typical awards show dress trend, and donned a sequined jumpsuit from designer Lois London. She finished her look with Jimmy Choo heels and Loren Ridinger jewelry.

Joyful Drake: Star of BET’s Let’s Stay Together, Joyful was radiant in a pewter sequined knee-length dress. Upswept hair, nude peep-toe pumps, and jeweled bangle bracelets completed her outfit.

Just like sequins are an awards show red carpet staple, so is the all white ensemble, especially at an event held in a warm weather city like Los Angeles.

Eva Marcille: The former America’s Next Top Model has a reality show set to premiere in September on Oxygen, and she was all aglow on the BET red carpet, wearing a white long-sleeve mini dress paired with tomato red pumps. Her stylish look was topped off with oversized statement turquoise hoop earrings.

Meagan Good: The newlywed was still on a bridal high in a floor length BCBG MAXAZRIA ‘Mara’ open back gown.

Kanye West: Making his first public awards show appearance with new girlfriend Kim Kardashian, Kanye made sure he and his date were color coordinated in matching all white ‘fits. Ye’s own Air Yeezy II sneakers completed his look.

It was not so basic black at the BET Awards show, as several celebs added visual interest to that old wardrobe staple of all black.

Angela Bassett: Angela kept it sexy in a little black lace dress that perfectly showed off her great legs. Classic peep-toe pumps were a perfect match for her timeless look.

Melanie Fiona: The R&B singer joined La La in going against the grain and wearing a jumpsuit instead of the expected dress. Melanie’s black jumpsuit featured a plunging neckline that she accented with an interesting cross necklace.

Tamia: She’s making a comeback, and Tamia looked every bit the part of an established R&B artist, radiant in a black gown accessorized with gold drop earrings, an armful of gold bangle bracelets, and a studded red clutch to complete her look.

Several celebs had red hot moments in all crimson ensembles as they walked the BET Awards red carpet.

Kelly Price: Wearing a one-shoulder dress that featured an oversized ruffle across the asymmetrical neckline, Kelly was a red carpet standout. She added more red to her outfit in the form of studded ankle-strap peep-toe pumps.

Monica: The R&B diva opted for a darker hued red suit to walk the red carpet. Monica paired a quilted burgundy blazer with matching burgundy sequined pants. She, too finished off her look with studded peep-toe pumps.

Miguel: Always one to keep it interesting on the red carpet, Miguel lived up to his own colorful hype in a red blazer, red slacks, red tee, and black and white shoes.

It wasn’t just at the pre-Awards party where shades of blue ruled the night. Blue proved to be a popular color for both the ladies and the fellas on the BET Awards red carpet.

Flo-Rida: The rapper donned a cornflower blue silk blazer that he paired with a white button down shirt, white slacks, and taupe shoes.

Jeezy: Jeezy also wore a silk blazer, but where Flo-Rida’s look was light and summery, Jeezy’s was dark and moody. His navy silk blazer was paired with a matching dark blue tee, black pants, and a statement chain.

Hosea Chanchez: Another star of BET’s The Game who walked the awards show red carpet, Hosea rocked a head-to-toe blue look. He made a definite style statement in a cobalt blue suit, crisp white shirt, and leopard shoes.

The fellas weren’t the only ones loving blue on the red carpet. The ladies got in on the fun, too, although they opted for the more turquoise shades of the color.

Jennah Bell: Newcomer singer/songwriter Jennah Bell made her BET debut during the event, and she shined in a multi-hued blue metallic dress. Blue satin peep-toe pumps, and a braided up ‘do finished her look.

Regina King: The Southland actress has been a consistent red carpet star as of late. And while her BET Awards ensemble may be hit or miss for some, it’s Regina’s glowing skin and bright smile that sell the possibly questionable look.

Taraji P. Henson: Taraji joined Regina in wearing a bright and bold turquoise hued ensemble on the red carpet. Her Zaeem Jamal ‘Blue Chakra’ silk-crepe cocktail dress was paired with gold lace up heels.

You can’t have a red carpet event without a little animal print, and a few adventurous celebs boldly answered the call.

Jaden Smith: Joined by younger sibling Willow, Jaden went for a casual look of black hoodie and black sneakers, but punched it up with a pair of black and white zebra print pants.

Toccara Jones: The TV personality, and former America’s Next Top Model star donned a head-to-toe black and white patterned look from the Gucci Spring 2012 collection.

Faith Evans: Faith made a return to the awards show stage performing a tribute to Maze featuring Frankie Beverly. While waking the red carpet she kept things fun in a black blazer, black and white blouse, and black and white leopard print pants.

Waxed, leather like denim was a big trend for the fellas on the BET Awards red carpet.

2 Chainz: The rapper, who’s featured on almost every song on the radio right now, paired his waxed denim with a white jacket, and select Versace accessories.

Usher: Usher took to the BET stage to perform his hit single Climax, wearing a simple ensemble of a black sleeveless tee, black waxed denim jeans, and added a pop of color to his look with red sneakers.

Tyga: The Young Money crew member closed out the BET Awards show with a live performance. Like 2 Chainz, Tyga also paired his waxed denim with a white jacket.

With so many monochromatic looks taking over the red carpet, colorful prints and patterns were few and far between. A few brave celebs dared to step outside the style box though.

Elle Varner: Refill singer Elle Varner definitely went bold in a multi-colored paisley print long sleeve sequined gown. A bright red lip, and side-swept curls completed her look.

Monica: Monica killed in her second look of the night as she brought the house down during her Whitney Houston tribute performance. Always one to rock looks from high end designers, Monica wore a hi-lo hem dress from the Alexander McQueen Spring 2010 ‘Plato Atlantis’ ready-to-wear collection.

Selita Ebanks: The former Victoria’s Secret model was on hand to support boyfriend and BET personality Terrence J. She wore a fringed look from Falguni and Shane, that she completed with Giuseppe Zanotti heels.

Even though the sun was brightly shining, that didn’t stop the celebs from pulling out their best leather gear to walk the BET red carpet.

Nicki Minaj: Compared to some of her past ensembles, this leather jacketed look was a relatively low key one for Best Female Rapper winner Nicki Minaj. A neon yellow bra top, and snakeskin tights finished off her look.

Brandy: Brandy took to the BET stage wearing a camel leather jacket, white jeans, and purple snakeskin pumps.

Tyga: Tyga rocked a second look for the night wearing a camel leather tee that he paired with black jeans, and black patent leather sneakers. He accessorized with the requisite gold chain.

A few celebs paid attention to the warm weather, and dressed in lighter hues appropriate for the summer months. While most were wearing bold primary colors like red, yellow, and blue, a few stars opted for the soft shades of blush pink.

Kerry Washington: Star of ABC’s Scandal, Kerry wore a blush Altuzarra bustier top paired with a black J. Mendel pencil skirt, and Jimmy Choo pumps.

Cedric the Entertainer: Cedric, who has a new show on TV Land, wore a blush linen suit, paired with a white button down shirt, and straw hat. He added a bit of fun with a matching flower on his lapel.

LoLa Monroe: Female rapper LoLa Monroe wore a perfectly fitted one shoulder blush dress. Side-swept hair, and a gold headpiece completed her look.

If Bey’s dress hadn’t been made so poorly, I’d say her dress was one of the best.

I like Tamia, but I thought her dress was kinda ugly or better suited for an older person.

I like Beyonce’s dress but the fact that she had to hold it all night to keep from tripping made it less attractive.

LaLa’s outfit: Not a good look for her….made her look bigger. I couldn’t stop thinking about Aladdin lol

Tatyana Ali was dressed poorly in my opinion.

Can’t quite put my finger on it, but something about Letoya’s dress makes me not like it.

The only thing in yellow I MIGHT where is Mrs. Crew’s jacket.
I don’t like those earrings on Eva, it’s too much for her small face; and IDK about that white dress for her either.
I do LOVE Angela Bassett’s dress; but am not feeling the hair on her.

LeToya was over dressed with her loose prom dress and immature hair style, her hair and weave were two different textures. I just wanted to yank that ponytail out of her hair. And that forehead…ugh! She is sooo boring yet tries Sooo hard, tooo hard! She’s starting to look like Vivica Fox with an “alienish” look, the plastic surgeries needs to stop!

    • These guys be acting up, these females be letting them

Her weave was fine a few days ago, I guess she sweated it out kicking it with Kevin Durant ;)
