MOVIE TRAILER: SPIKE LEE’S ‘RED HOOK SUMMER’

July 1st, 2012

Spike Lee released the full trailer for his newest joint, Red Hook Summer. The film caused a lot of discussion and debate at this year’s Sundance Music Festival. According to reports, the newer version may have been re-edited and shortened and the film features Mookie, a character from his previous joint, Do the Right Thing. Based on the trailer, it looks movie going worthy. Either way, take a look at the trailer and full movie summary down below.

Spike Lee & Variance Films’ Red Hook Summer will start playing in movie theaters on August 10, 2012.

FULL SYNOPSIS:
RED HOOK SUMMER tells the story of Flik Royale (Jules Brown), a sullen young boy from middle-class Atlanta who has come to spend the summer with his deeply religious grandfather, Bishop Enoch Rouse (Clarke Peters), in the housing projects of Red Hook. Having never met before, things quickly get off on the wrong foot as Bishop Enoch relentlessly attempts to convert Flik into a follower of Jesus Christ. Between his grandfather’s constant preaching and the culture shock of inner-city life, Flik’s summer appears to be a total disaster–until he meets Chazz Morningstar (Toni Lysaith), a pretty girl his age, who shows Flik the brighter side of Brooklyn. Through her love and the love of his grandfather, Flik begins to realize that the world is a lot bigger, and perhaps a lot better, than he’d ever imagined. [SOURCE]

LOL. So if we don’t like Spike Lee movies, that must mean we like Tyler Perry movies? I have liked about a handful of Spike Lee movies. Usually his plots are convoluted and difficult to follow. But I for damn sure don’t like Tyler Perry movies either.

Maybe the reason it might look boring is because it’s represents what real and not something that looks like another hollywood cutout. Spike lee is a real artist and I think his movies are raw and real.

I think it is something that show the black cue in a positive light and not some ghetto chitlin stereotype. Way to go Spike Lee. Somebody has to show culture for our youth. Its sad that our youth have to make comments that say it looks boring. HELP!!!!! Our youth are loosing its culture from our music to our movies. We need more Spike Lee’s.

What’s the culture? Religion? Not everybody is.

I’m interested in the movie because I feel like I can relate. I know exactly what its like to be forced to sit in a tiny, hot church every Sunday wearing frilly dresses and a million hairbows, when all you want to do is play or watch cartoons. It feels like older people are insistent on forcing religion on children instead of letting them take their own path. I don’t go to church now and I feel like me being forced as a child has a lot to do with it. That and the hypocrisy I saw (my family included).

I think the reason someday say it’s boring is because the movie is simply executed without a lOt of distractions, well known actors, big effects. It forces you to focus on the story/issue and think a bit. Some movies have higher entertainment value than others.

    Love jah

We do need to confront our need for organized religion as African Americans… I did not watch the clip but from the synopsis I can only gather Spike as giving us a look at what religion really represents for us….I like Spike like I like Nas I swear they over deliver on their own thoughts without decluttering for the average person to follow however I will watch as I know there will be well thought out theories for me to ponder

B-More Rated for Nuthin' But Tha Goodness

I want to see this movie. I haven’t seen a Spike Lee movie in a minute and this is something that I definitely can relate to. My late grandfather was a Pastor of his own church and he baptized me. One of my late Aunts would take me to church with her constantly when I was little growing up in the South. So, yes I used to it but when you’re younger you don’t understand it. Yes, it bores the living daylights out of you but I’m in my 30′s now and I truly appreciate the foundation that was laid down for me. God isn’t a religion. I think great number of people have that confused. God is a belief. You either get it or you don’t. There is no in between where HE is concerned. The youth nowadays and young people period do not honor their elders or their pasts. The older someone is, the more they can teach you. I know people holler about kids growing up differently nowadays and they have so much more than we had growing up and all of that may be true, however, the skills of parenting haven’t changed and neither has God. There isn’t anything new under the sun, only different packaging. With that being said, I’m proud of Spike, Tyler, John, and Anthony. They each have filmed movies from many an angle of the black experience.

This trailer doesnt make me want to watch. Neither do Tyler Perrys trailers either (since its obvious that you MUST talk about one when mentioning the other). For one, I am past tired of seeing pictures of White Jesus. In addition, I too went to my grandmother’s church that reminded me of this one and I still don’t like going there? I don’t think its a good representation of what church is and it hasn’t deterred me from going to a church. Like anything else, you have to find one that fits you.I found one that was home and I knew it from the moment I walked in. I just hope this doesn’t reinforce negative stereotypes some people have about what church is (supposed to be).

I saw the film at Sundance, it’s not a church movie, the emphasis focused more on the conflict of religion and the Black community i.e. putting so much faith and stock into the idea while being void and naive to what life really has to offer. I thought it was good. I hope it isn’t edited for the theaters, kinda sucks to limit an artist (like Spike) like that.

    Existential

Thank you B-More, you summed it up well.
Since “Blackness” was created and defined by our ancestors and continues to evolve as we have evolved: from African to slave, to negro, to colored, to Black, to African-American, and perhaps now to (as I consider myself ) American all movie styles and story lines are valid. Tyler has an audience that validates his comedy, Spike has his audience. Spike shouldn’t hate on Tyler though. Tyler’s movies get better as he learns and matures in his crafts, but his style is mainstream, family-oriented movies, Spike’s is more artistic, real-life, risk-taking. Each is valid, each is true, each speaks of American life and each style deserves space in Hollywood.

Loving a Spike Lee joint does not make you anymore pro-black, nor does disliking a spike lee movie make you a coon. Personally I am sick of the main idea behind these African American films being the bible. Now I have seen some spike lee films that I will say have been amazing, crooklyn was one of them. But since Tyler has beating the horse to death with this notion of “God will make everything better” I am ready to see something new. I went out and watched The Help which if you have not seen it I do recommend it, because yet it was written by a white woman it really opens up your eyes. Anyway the movie just does not seem interesting, just like Tyler’s new movie does not catch my interest. I think the only movie I supported was why did I get married too after I saw one on DVD at a family gathering, and for color girls. You want to point the finger and say it makes us less pro-black, okay. But I do not let a movie reflect my support and willingness to fight for a better future among African Americans. I am a full time college student, don’t sell or use drugs, and I worked with urban African American and Hispanic children for two years telling them it is possible. Forgive me if I will not go see this movie, I have better things to do.
