MOVIE TRAILER: ‘STEEL MAGNOLIAS’ (STARRING QUEEN LATIFAH, PHYLICIA RASHAD & MORE)

July 3rd, 2012

Earlier this year, it was announced that an All-African American cast would be remaking the classic 1989 movie, Steel Magnolias; and now a preview trailer drops for our viewing pleasure.

Based in the city of New Orleans, executive producer Queen Latifah plays M’Lynn (originally played by Sally Fields), actress Phylicia Rashad plays Clairee (Olympia Dukakis) and up-and-coming actress Adepero Oduye takes on the role of Annelle (Daryl Hannah)), Clairee’s daughter. Jill Scott plays Truvy (Dolly Parton), Alfre Woodard as Ouiser (Shirley MacLaine) and Condola Rashad as Shelby (Julia Roberts).

Lance Gross, Michael Beasley and Tory Kittles are also reportedly co-starring in the newest Lifetime tearjerker. Steel Magnolias is expected to premiere later this year. Hopefully that’s not too far from now because the 2-minute preview looks pretty good! Watch it below.

I’m sorry but I didn’t need an updated version of this movie. I guess I’m biased because I thought the original was boring as hayell. This seems boring and corny. I maybe could handle a remake of Terms of Endearment.

What is up with that forced southern twang.. they sound like some White folks trying to fake a southern accent. Just talk regular damn.. Queen Latifah and Phylicia Rashad should have switched roles. It seems just like the original.. they could have updated this version; like having the child die instead of the daughter or something. Some things should just be left alone.

I was thinking the same thing about Queen and Phylicia switching roles.

my comments exactly. queen and phylicia switch roles and the southern accent does seem forced…

Yeah that would have been better. This wasn’t a good fit for Latifah- I love her as an actress. It looks like they’re going to change a few things from the original. Looks like a good flick either way

It looks ok, but the original was a classic, why mess with it? In my humble opinion I think that if we (African Americans)want to get our just due in this business, we have to WRITE the story rather than REWRITE the story. Just a side note: I pray that Jill Scott does not have a crying monologue in this, I can’t take much more of that. LoL.

Jill Scott “does crying well” but it will be nice to have her in a movie where she isn’t padded or pregnant or just had a baby. They still probably won’t dress her decently, but if she can just look like Jill. Acting is no problem for the Real Botswana Diamond – besides having a great voice she does know how to act! We Jill Scott fans will take her in anything, but mostly we want her back as Mma Ramotswe.

WHY??? This movie did not need a remix.. I guess because there wasn’t any “blacks” in the original?? UGH! I’m sorry,Queen Latifah is a bad actor. How can they give her M’Lynn… M’Lynn was small, but strong… Queen is too masculine to play ANY OF THE PARTS. Everyone else seem ok… I guess. But by reading the comments, I know I wouldn’t be able to deal with their fake accents..especially QL. Somethings need to be left alone! There are plenty of great movies that were made and didn’t receive their proper due..Those are the movies they need to remix.. I would like to see movies like “Black Girl” remixed..

OK!!! I like the fact that they have an all Black cast of Beautiful actresses BUT… I am made that they made a Redo of a classic movie… DONT FIX WHATS NOT BROKEN… Why could they just have another ORIGINAL/NEW script that can potentially be a classic as well… Are they really that scared for Black people to come up as an A Lister in Hollywood so they will set us up just so we can fall back down to the High for blacks which will always be a B-lister

I love Steel Magnolias but was wondering, of all movies, why they chose to remake Steel Magnolias.

This is one of my favorite movies. I don’t understand why they’re remaking it. I love the original version and I do not need a new version just to have a black cast….and this is coming from a BLACK person.

Why is Queen Latifah playing M’Lynn? Phylicia or Alfre should have been doing that. Alfre isn’t a good fit for Ousier.

Doesn’t look good to me. I say, FAIL. I’m biased.

    This looks AWFUL. Lol

None of the southern accents sound remotely authentic and it looks corny.

Loretta Devine would have been good for a part in this movie because she has a good southern accent.

NO. SORRY. NO. Alfe and Phylicia will be good. They are sesoned actors….but the rest, uh? Don’t we have a story to tell. Must we really remake this??? Queen doesn’t seem to fit in Sally Field’s role. She isn’t old enough. And I don’t believe her. Gosh. Wil somebody write something. It could have be a take on the original…this isn’t an “our story”…I’m sure I’ll end up seeing because my mother will want to…but…NO!

Wait a minute…..a movie with a bunch of black women cryin’, hollerin’, causing confusion, and acting 20 years younger than they actually are? This hasn’t been done…….since 2011 smdh. Phylicia Rashad must need a couple of dollars for her to associate with the rest of this trash. When is King Latifah going to star in something closer to her real life persona?…..something like “The George Foreman Story” lol.

Shit, it’s free. It’ll be on Lifetime, so I don’t even have to leave my house. If it were a feature film, I’d pass and wait for it to pop up on HBO, SHO, or Starz.

I watch this movie (the original) ALL THE TIME. I’m mad they pretty much have them saying exactly what they said in the original, line from line. I mean they could have changed it up a bit. Not cool.

Looks like it will be interesting to watch, though I think Queen and Phylicia Rashad were not cast correctly, should’ve switched. Other than that, why is everyone hating on this?

Because that’s what they do. Can you imagine having some of these folks as friends or family members; I’d drop them and go make some money…then go back twenty years later. Guess what, they will still be doing the same thing…watching others make money while they continue to negatively criticize…LOL

If you think about it, really not that unusual to re-make Steel Magnolias with an all black cast. It is a perfect fit. Movie that takes place in the South, African Americans living the same life styles and having the same problems. When it comes down to it an Asian cast wouldn’t have worked, but an all black cast seems like a natural AND they re-make dozens of movies each year so why not Steel Magnolias. Some of you who are under 30 think many of the movies they make are NEW – they are just re-makes of movies from the 40s, 50s, 60s, etc. If I have to watch re-makes why shouldn’t YOU.
