ON THE SET: NICKI MINAJ FILMS CARNIVAL-INSPIRED MUSIC VIDEO IN TRINIDAD

July 5th, 2012

Young Money’s Nicki Minaj flew out to her native land of Trinidad to film her carnival inspired music video for her house-pop track, “Pound the Alarm.” Filmed at the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain, the Pink Friday recording artist rocked a red, exotic masquerade costume and hit the stage with Soca artists like Fay-Ann Lyons, Bunji Garlin and Machel Montano.

According to the music video’s director Benny Boom, the video will open the eyes of Minaj’s fans throughout the globe, giving them a glance at where Nicki aka Onika comes from:

“I think Trinidad is challenge sometimes, tourism wise, because in the (United) States at least people don’t know it as a location for beaches and that sort of thing, so I think that in that regard, you gotta get people to look at the island for what it offers.” [SOURCE]

Welp, when you’re losing your originally targeted audience, it helps to go “back to your roots”. Why wait until your sophomore album to be proud of your Trini heritage. Please see through the facade, people!

She has represented Trinidad since the beginning. She did the MTV special when her first album came out, showing when she visited all of her family in Trinidad, helping out with expenses, talked about her past, and migrating to the States.Plenty of hiphop MCs step into different genres. Her first album wasn’t just hiphop music. Why do people expect that from her 2nd album? Can’t wait for the video!Trinidad carnival is the stuff of LEGENDS!
