In a surprising early morning 4 of July tumblr post, singer/songwriter Frank Ocean released the official album ‘Thank You’s’ from his highly anticipated debut, Channel Orange. The 24 year old spoke in a poetic way about love, his sexuality, music and growth.

“Whoever you are, wherever you are..I’m starting to think we’re a lot alike. Human beings spinning on blackness. All wanting to be seen, touched, heard, paid attention to. My loved ones are everything to me here. In the last year or 3 I’ve screamed at my creator, screamed at clouds in the sky. For some explanation, mercy maybe. For peace of mind to rain like manna somehow. 4 summers ago, I met somebody. I was 19 years old. He was too. We spent that Summer, and the Summer after, together. Everyday almost. And on the days we were together, time would glide, most of the day I’d see him, and his smile. I’d hear his conversation and his silence..until it was time to sleep. Sleep I would often share with him. But the time I realized I was in love, it was malignant. It was hopeless. There was no escaping. No negotiating with the feeling. No choice. It was my first love, it changed my life. Back then, my mind would wander to the women I had been with, the ones I cared for and thought I was in love with. I reminisced about the sentimental songs I enjoyed when I was a teenager..the ones I played when I experienced a girlfriend for the first time. I realized they were written in a language I did not yet speak. I realized too much, too quickly. Imagine being thrown from a plane. I wasn’t in a plane though. I was in a Nissan Maxima, the same care I packed up with bags and drove to Los Angeles in. I saw there and told my friend How I felt. I wept as the words left my mouth. I grieved for them, knowing I could never take them back for myself. He patted my back. He said kind things. He did his best, but he wouldn’t admit the same. He had to go back inside soon, it was late and his girlfriend was waiting for him upstairs. He wouldn’t tell me the truth about his feelings for me for another 3 years. I felt like I’d only imagined reciprocity for years. Now imagine being thrown from a cliff, no I wasn’t on a cliff. I was still in my car telling myself it was gonna be fine and to take deep breaths. I took the breaths and carried on. I kept up a peculiar friendship with him because I couldn’t imagine keeping up my life without him. I struggled to master myself and my emotions. I wasn’t always successful.
The dance went on.. I kept the rhythm for several Summers after. It’s winter now. I’m typing this on a plane back to Los Angeles from New Orleans. I flew home for another marred Christmas. I have a window seat. It’s December 27, 2011. By now, I’ve written two albums. This being the second. I wrote to keep myself busy and sane. I wanted to create worlds that were rosier than mine. I tried to channel overwhelming emotions. I’m surprised at how far all of it has taken me. Before writing this I’d told some people my story. I’m sure these people kept me alive, kept me safe…sincerely. These are the folks I wanna thank from the floor of my heart. Everyone of you knows who you are.. Great Humans, probably Angels. // I don’t know what happens now, and that’s alrite. I don’t have any secrets I need kept anymore. There’s probably some small shit still, but you know what I mean. I was never alone, as much as I felt like it.. As much as I still do sometimes. I never was. I don’t think I ever could be. Thanks, to my first love. I’m grateful for you. I think it’s great that you look at it that way because I originally thought that he could be talking about God too but when I kept reading and saw what he said about his friend’s girlfriend was waiting for him I couldn’t find the correlation to this being about God anymore. Nevertheless, he is the only one that has to answer to God about whatever this is really about so…

Frank is such a brave man! I’m jelous of that guy he’s in love with, that’s real right there! But I will still purchase his album. He’s soo talented and he’s sexuality is not going to make him less talented. I’m looking forward to see more from him in the future. I’m only hoping him coming out like that, won’t work against him in this prejudice world we are living in.

I already loved the music, saw him perform in London, loved his art even more, and now his personality. I really respect everything about him. He inspires me to do greater things. The inspiration lies in the fact that this man is being who he is regardless of all the negative homophobic people we live amongst. Do you know how big this is? Somewhere someone is struggling with their sexuality and is on the verge of suicide because they are afraid of what this evil society has in store for them. People like Frank Ocean can open doors and show our community that no matter who you love, you can do whatever you want to do. Look at the caucasians….Adam Lambert is an openly gay entertainer and his cd debuted at #1 on Billboard. He is very successful so why can’t there be any successful black gay artists. It’s 2012 people. Barack Obama is on board with gay marriage, Russell Simmons stands behind this man. You may not agree with what he is doing but to say this isn’t inspirational is a lie. My Dad was a newbie, and still a kid himself, so there was little beyond money provided for my brother & he stayed with our Mom at church functions most of his free time. He also was a talented musician who was surrounded by old school gospel greats & @the time, there was a HUGE homosexual presence in the industry. He got into the lifestyle as a teen, it was all he knew, & he stayed in it until his early death. It was sad, but I cannot say I did not voice my opinion when asked how I felt about the life he’d chosen. I sometimes find Americans a little more dramatic when it comes to things like this I mean yes this was beautifully written, I honestly had visuals and detailed imagery but I just don’t see why its completely necessary and in such detail… why is it our business? I think the deeper issue is society’s obsession with sexuality and of course celebrities.
take for example Queen Latifah, she knows the deal and we know the deal but because its not our business she feels no need to explain or describe anything. Like I said in another comment….he only posted this because there had been rumors going around about his bi-sexuality recently based on some of his lyrics on his new album. I don’t think he would bother if it was supposed to be taken another way. True, he is super insightful and a deep thinker but sometimes stuff is just what it is.

I kind of agree w/ Emmia. It is hard listening to a male r&b singer, singing to another man. I’m confused, only because he is referencing a past experience. What does it really say unless he comes out and says I am gay, or I am bisexual? I’m not naive to think that he is the only man out there that has had an experience of that kind and not packed it away never to be open about it again because of what society tells men they should do or be. A very poignant letter though, clearly this was a powerful experience for him, the person touched him deeply. We’ll see what this does for his career being as there are a couple closet cases out today that everyone swoons about when the signs are clearly evident. I’m not a fan really and couldn’t get into his music, but this sparks my interest a bit more and I’m sure there is some struggling Black guy out there confused about himself and a letter like that has possibly saved a life…good look Frank.

I think the letter is basically a realization that he’s a homosexual- and the love that he felt for this particular guy superceded anything that he’s ever felt for the women that he “thought” he loved in the past. So, he’s indirectly confirming that he’s gay. That’s how I interpreted it.

Assuming you are a female, doesn’t feel right to be in love with a man? So I assume you have not been in love with a woman. So how exactly do you know it doesn’t feel right if you have never experienced it. Frank Ocean could have said “Yes, I am gay or bisexual.” He could but that’s not him. I am not saying I know dude personally but by being a true fan, understanding his mindset in his songs and interviews, he does not do ordinary. He is not Chris Brown, Drake, Avant, etc were as what they say is what they mean, he is a complex individual. He creates these alternative worlds with his music so he can tell a story and take his listeners on the ride with him. Proverbs 4: 20-27 speaks of keeping The Fathers words in his heart and Exodus 36 speaks of God stirring the peoples heart to want give unto the building of his tabernacle. Gods love is wrapped around the law as the ark of testimony as jesus Christ sacrificing himself for it and us (exodus 25) with His mercy seat on top. Keeping Gods commandments is love because you must love God with all your heart, mind, and soul and your neighbor as yourself, which expands to love(God) is patience, love(God) is kind, etc. And if you abide faith, hope, and above all, love God abides in you (1 Corinthians 13). If you Love God first, hope, and faith in the risen Christ, you would have no problem following Gods word because God would stir up the want and desire to do his will. How can we keep his words in our hearts, joy, and rejoice is right way without convictions or feelings? Aren’t those emotions?Love is God in perfect and so are the emotions we get from him. Its emotions outside of Gods love and the lack of understanding of Gods full love is the problem. Do not confuse the two.
What is his reason for making this public? Album sales, non stop promo and a new audience. Frank is broadening his audience to make more money and get more endorsement deals. 99.9% of the industry is gay, so we know that he’s annoucing this for a reason.
