I downloaded the album from Itunes last night and it has been in constant play since and I will be getting the hard copy next week. He is still the same Frank from the mixtapes and I like that, his sound is refreshing, different and his lyrics have meaning. Congrats to Mr. Ocean on his first album!

Although he used the I’m gay strategy ……it worked I loved it and the album I’m in love with! I just hope with that strategy I hope he owns up to it and is actually gay because the backlash could be harsh! I would have bought his album without him “coming out” and he still would have went #1 because he is something we aren’t use to.

    • LULU

@SMONTY1227 but let’s not forget, it totally backfired on Ellen when she did come out, because she forcefed her sexuality into everything that she did (which is also why Wanda Sykes stock went down because she constantly made mention of being a lesbian). It wasn’t until she got over it and stopped trying to be an advocate that she eventually found success again with stand-up and eventually the talk show. So that’s really not a good example, but I see what @LISTENING is saying, as unclear he was about his statment/admission, using it to sell records well, would be trifling if that was the case. I hope not.

Didn’t he come out of the closet because everyone started to question the lyrics that were going to be on his album? Better to come out of the closet with your head held high like a real man than to be forced out like a bitch.

Do y’all even realize what you’re listening to or are you just following the crowd? His songs are amazing? Really? In what way exactly? Can someone breakdown each song on this album for me, since you all understand how “deep” and innovating he is….
I doubt any of you can, because you don’t know anything lol. Everytime an artist has music with flowery lyrics and elaborate context — lyrics you can’t even begin to comprehend — you automatically deem it “deep” lol. No, my friend, it’s not deep, it’s a bunch of words with little to no meaning.
Meanwhile, he’s worshipping the d3vil and his people are sitting applauding that his music is pleasing to you people. How you can support people like him is Beyond me.

The beautiful thing about music, lyrics, art and just about everything in life is that it allows everyone to connect in their own way and interpret it as it relates to their life/journey. What might be deep to one may be superficial to another.

As for devil worshipping, we should all lock ourselves in a cave to avoid exposure to the world. The DEVIL (aka greed, envy, power, control) is every where and is disguised as climbing the corporate ladder, achieving the American dream, corporate shenanigans, and out of control Governement). For example, I guess the people jacking up oil prices to line their own pockets, to support war or keep entire countries oppressed are like Jesus. Or does that make us all a supporter of devil worshippers in some regards? I’m just saying…

      I’m just saying…

@Pink Lemn don’t even waste your time. To me as long as the people I care about knows what’s going on and are aware of it I don’t try to force any knowledge on unbelievers. People will see in the end. Worshipping people is a sin as it is. At this point in music people will listen to anything and call it amazing. Be glad that you are awake and know the truth. To me it’s amazing how no one even wants to take the time to research anything to know the truth but to each it’s own. As long as I know and my loved ones are aware that’s what matters to me. And believe me there are more people that are awake to what these artist are doing and praising then you think. We are not alone in this trust me.

These people are so biased and one sided! They’re doing their best to squeeze God or anything that has to do with God out the media. These artist continue to be blasphem0us and apparently NO ONE sees anything wrong with it. They can disrespect God and/or the Bible and no one will object. But if I were to disrespect the “geighs” I’d be crucifiedx and called “ignorant” (that is people’s favorite word they use on you when you don’t agree with them) and my comment would be deleted from sites like this. I just don’t understand. People complain daily that are kids are “too grown” “too disrespectful” “too inappropriate” “lack morals” but we don’t do anything about it. These kids are being influenced by the WORLD. The same world YOU chose to liberate. The same world where EVERYTHING is accepted. At what point do we stop and say. “you know what, this is not right”. LOVE IS LOVE. So I’m guessing you see nothing wrong with a 70 year old man falling in love with a 14 year old girl. Afterall, love is love. SMH. Tis a sad world we live in today. I’m ready JESUS.

I agree with everyone’s comments. It’s just truly sad how caught up in the matrix people are. It’s gotten to the point where I don’t listen to music or watch television. People don’t know they are being controlled by the media who are the biggest devils. I’m done with trying to preach to black folk. If they want to stay unaware then you’ll just be unaware. any person with common sense can see how this world is changing right in front of their eyes but yet people still deny that anything is wrong. Very accepting of any and everything. It’s a damn shame.

Despite my name on here, I’ve been ignoring all the posts that refer to the “devil worshiping artists/ satanic music and symbols in music” because sometimes I think people over-analyze.

However, I just looked up the lyrics to this song (b/c I’ve never heard it) and I don’t think I’ll be supporting this artist or listening to his music in any way.

To all other believers, we need to be careful about what we listen to…you just might be bopping your head to a song that’s blasphemous to God. The lyrics to this song can be taken that way and obviously he did it on purpose. I’ve noticed that Mr. Ocean makes a lot of religious references in other songs to promote his beliefs. He can do what he want, but I want be listening and neither should any of the believers. TRUST me, it matters…don’t think “it’s just entertainment”…

“If it brings me to my knees, it’s a bad religion
Unrequited love, To me it’s nothing but a one man cult”…come on now, you’re a fool if you can’t understand this

    Reply /0
    • Godson

U could easily be misinterpreting this. I myself am a believer who does not agree with organized religion in most cases.. It really is “bad religion” that Mr. Ocean felt love for someone, and he knew that self assured believers would condemn him for it. Just judge, not help, just judge and condemn.
I love the song…and his passion is undeniable. I know Christians have a hard time opening their minds to anything different, and apparently so does he.

      Reply /0
    • Some thoughts

Tell us how you interpret it. Because from my point of view, he is saying religion is something that brings us to our knees (to pray), however in his case b/c there is heartache involved it must be a BAD religion, since GOOD religion doesn’t cause heartache.

I don’t really think that has anything to do with him being blasphemous towards G-d.

I’ll be the first to say that I didn’t understand No Church, so he could very well be subliminally speaking out against all religion. However, he has professed that he believes in G-d in another of his songs, We All Try.

My question is why use religion as a negative metaphor? It just adds to the suspicion that this is just another calculated move to stir more controversy to push album sales. I don’t see any other reason for it. First an “open letter,” a week later a performance of a song called Bad Religion, and now, surprise, my album is released early. What happened to Sweet Life? He looks sad singing this song. He is a talented songwriter but I’m not feeling his angle. Where are all these fans coming from? After all the controversy it seems like so many people have jumped on his bandwagon. Interested to see what the numbers are going to be for his first week sales and if they will drop dramatically or stay steady.

Hes a genius. And truthfully genuine. I commend him for expressing his heart, unlike most men. Some only go to a certain limit with pouring there soul out. He let it all out, and its trully beatiful. PLus, its not the point of him going against religion snd turning it into a negative basis…from what hes saying ( how i understand/ and based on how i see it as well), is that its a burden within his heart to feel such anguish because its said to be so wrong by the world and or religion it self. Its hurtful as well as deeply painful inside to feel this way. To be raised into a certain religion and and family that neglects the fact of being your own person no matter how much of a difference you are as an indiviual compared to another, especially if its someone you love, and those feeling are hard to mask. one could lie and deny it, but on the inside its tearing them apart to have such feeelings,… feelings that will be seen as a discrace to those that are closest in heart. that alone can give a person the BLUES.

also, For him to keep it a secret adds on to the pressure.hes not himself, hes holding back who he really is to suit the common needs of society. Why hide who you are just to feel N-Synk with the world.

Paint your own portrait and live your own life. Those who cant love and appreicate you for you are hypocrits. If they cannot find the heart to love another then they must not love them self… This topic has so many chapters of undertsanding its rediculous

It just goes to show that perspection is everything. And to the fire and brim stone messengers, you do realize that the act of kneeling is not only peculiar to Christianity. In fact it seems to be more compulsory in Islam were they kneel to pray

I doubt God cares about religion. So you will not be hurting his feelings to call religion bad. Because it is bad and has infact removed us from the essence of a relationship with HIM(which was what he intended from the begining) and focused on self righteous rituals, legalisms and empty ceremonies, leading us to a circle of nowhere.

Religion has focused on what it is we can do for God, when he has made it clear that we would always fall short.

He has told us to focus on HIS love for us. and the abundance of his grace through his son. People are out here sinning because they feel damned and they think “well if God is real, he already hates us so we might as well keep on sinning”. But perfect love cast out all fear. When they understand the depth and breath of Gods perfect love, they will draw closer to HIM, and slowly God begins to show them who they reallly are in HIM, then sin begins to lose its appeal because his grace is bestowed. But na na, we want to do do, keep fallin short then wonder why when God say its already been done!

So yes unrequited love is a bad religion. Telling these people to love God, but no one is telling them how much he loves them. I mean if we want to go all deep in it, that was what I got. But of course frank ocean might just be saying something else. My perspective

i went and read the lyrics to the song.Let us not forget that anything a person worships becomes their god.In that regard, his religion/his god was this dude he wanted.to me,it speaks of his anguish for being in this situation, feeling the way he does about it.I was fully expecting to be put off by it,to see the epitome of blasphemy, and be disgusted by him. That isnt the case.Im thinking that he comes acros as being torn.As asking not to be cursed by the man who says he needs prayer (because he knows thats what will probably come next)but thinking that he probably can use some prayer.
I dont think thats stretching it too far…sometimes Its like sitting in a philosphy class reading peoples inferences on here…I hated that class, lol.
