The late great Whitney Houston was honored at the 2012 BET Awards in Los Angeles Sunday night (July 1) held in the Shrine Auditorium. The emotional tribute featured Mariah Carey, Monica, Brandy, Chaka Khan and Whitney’s brother Gary Houston and mother Cissy Houston (pictured above). There was also an appearance from her ‘Waiting to Exhale’ co-stars Angela Bassett, Lela Rochon and Loretta Divine.
The performances and overall emotion had most of the viewing audience in tears, including Beyonce, Soulja Boy, Melanie Fiona and more. Check out full video and photos below.. How did you like the tribute?

I really wanted Mariah Carey to preform but all our wishes cannot come true. I did enjoy all of the performances, yet I believe Brandy could have put on a dress for the event. She was the only one with street clothes on, which pretty much was out of sync with the rest. Chaka looked great and goodness if I would not have known she was 59 I would not believe it. She sounds great too. I wanted Patti to sing as well, but you know one legend is good enough. Monica was okay and Cissy had everyone about to cry. Everyone thought Beyonce should have preformed No Tea No Shade to Bey, but her vocals are no match for a Whitney song. I know I will get some comments on that but I am stating my opinion. Of course I felt it could have been better, how can you truly pay tribute to such a great woman and leave out some of the women who were with her during the time when her career was at its best. I enjoyed it, it was the only reason I watched the B.S they call the BET award and D’Angelo of course. BTW he sound great.
Brandy was dressed as Whitney from the video…its pretty obvious…and she was the only one really dancing.

Brandi had several “deer in the light moments”. Just like the picture that CL has on display. Everyone was great! Cissy had me crying,and to be honest in the middle of the song cringing. I would have loved for her to keep the song and vocals minimal……please don’t kill me

Not at all…Brandy was over the top with this performance. I was sooo rooting for her but she was a big disappointment and I’m a Brandy fan. I hate to say this but I must give it up to Monica she delievered in every way on her tribute to Whitney. She owned the tribute. She already had the crowd of their feet from her performance. Some began to sit down as Brandy got into her performance. She was doing wayyy too much…

Ok so I’m not really understanding all of the hype about Brandy’s performance. Her movement was great but her vocals were pretty dry. For those high pitch songs, she stayed in the same low register. I guess Whitney’s music is just untouchable. But it’s fun to watch people try. Lol

Monica is a boring Artist in general, so are most of her performances… Her voice has no real growth or change, she sings off key at times and is very pitchy at times. Don’t get me wrong she’s a great singer and years ago I would have even went as far as to say she was a better singer than Brandy,but Brandy is a Great ARTIST, Brandy (Now) just understands her voice and how to use it after coming into her own. Monica at times tends to over use hers to try to prove something that at times goes unnoticed because she lacks control. If Monica took vocal lessons and experimented more with her voice, I think others would take more notice, We all know she can Blow, but that’s just about all she can do musically honestly.

It takes a STRONG woman to sing for the daughter you birthed; watched catapult to the highest echelon of success and plummet with so much struggle and pain in between. My hat goes off to Ms. Cissy Houston because I would be somewhere with a pole and a drip. She had been Whitney’s bridge over troubled waters for so long. RESPECT that woman..she deserves it. Now… Monica she tends to over-sing at times; but I love that song.. can’t complain. I really loved Brandy’s performance. Yes her voice is extra low these days; after having Sy’rai her voice went down a few octaves which is normal after pregnancy. Many people don’t know Gary was singing Whitney’s song “Where You Are”. Chaka really closed the tribute well; love her. Seeing the WTE ladies was so lovely. I thought Mariah’s speech was superb. It was beautiful and you could tell she was really about to break down. BET have always done right by Whitney and this was the best tribute so far. It wasn’t about who can sing a Whitney song the best; it was about who had truly been her friends. She loved her some Monica and Brandy and it was perfect. Only person missing for me was Mary J. Blige.. she can take you to church. Whitney was in heaven smiling down. Loved the tribute. Cissy Houston…took God’s strength to do that and I applaud her for that. But, her singing made me lower the volume. I’m sorry. Everyone to me sounded awesome, but her. I still give total respect to her because many would not be able to do what she did. I thought they chose some great songs for the tribute though. I believe Whitney would have been proud.
Brandy hands down did a great job! No she didn’t hit the high notes of Whitney she worked the stage. To be honest Monica didn’t do all that great to me, I struggled while watching that performance. I commend Cissy for singing, she has some real strength. Fr those that may be critiquing her performance, she is straight old school church singing, #nofliter, as you could say. She may not have hit all the “right” notes but she had the emotion behind it. Overall, it was a good tribute.

This to me was probably the best tribute out of all the award shows this year (Grammys and Billboard), and their best overall given that they had time to prepare unlike the Michael fiasco 3 years ago. I too thought Mariah might do something but the fact that she was there was enough.
The tribute was so nice! everyobe did great! Brandy killed it! She didn’t lip sync and she kept the tribute interesting and something for people to dance to in the midst of being emotional. Brandy couldnt perform a slow song anyway cuz she is too emotional from this too. I think the ” Bet ” awards were fantastic, Kanye killed it!!!! The Whitney tribute was hott; Monica’s voice is absolutely amazing, Chaka completely did her thing as always, Brandy did the dame thing I love how she channeled Whitney from her past videos and Mrs Cissy Houston did great. People have to realize her voice might not have been completely on point but imagine giving a tribute and singing for your deceased child. She was holding back tears and did a fantastic job doing so in my opinion.

I don’t think the show was structured well at all, but my main criticism is to piggyback off of circ1984 and say that way too much focus was given to the rap and hip-hop genres. I was starving for more of what Monica, Joe and Melanie brought to the table. And I understand BET relies on its viewers and many of them are Beyonce fans, but it was very frustrating that Beyonce filled my TV screen in every other shot.

I thought the tribute was amazing. Hands down the best Whitney tribute I’ve seen yet. Monica was amazing as usual. Brandy definitely brought her “A” game. Chaka Khan was stunning as usual. I wouldn’t expect less from her. And say what you will about Gary and Cissy Houston but their emotions were definitely behind their performances. It’s not easy singing to and for your deceased loved one. To me their performances were emotionally and spiritually beautiful. I thought that Mariah’s and the cast of “Waiting to Exhale”‘s eulogies were beautiful. And it was refreshing from the usual performances. Thank you BET for giving Whitney a proper tribute.

Brandy was AMAZING last night. I think she was by far the best of the night overall. She really gave the best performance. She sounded great, she looked great, and her energy on stage was fantastic!
We must not forget that Whitney was a Soprano/Mezzo Soprano, and Brandy is an Alto/Contralto. No one should expect Brandy (or ANY other singer for that matter) to sing Whitney’s songs and sound exactly the way she did. The purpose of a tribute is to pay homage to the artists who paved the way for the artists of today, not to imitate, remake, and duplicate.
As Brandy wisely said, “There’s only one WHITNEY HOUSTON. And there will NEVER EVER be another like her.” Bottom line, she was superb and I’m so proud of her.
