She actually knows how to manipulate and control her vocals and stays within her RANGE, which is what true vocalist do best…

Ignorance isn’t attractive at all. A song recorded in the studio does not grant the listener the ability to hear the full range of a artist’s voice. Fantasia is talented, yes! However, she does a lot of hollering on songs and during performances! Whitney Houston is a LEGEND and “The Voice” of a generation, and paved the way for every female artist that follow her. If you didn’t know, Whitney has blessed and stood behind Brandy’s TRUE talent from day one! It’s called a raspy voice; not a whisper. Every singer that can sing/sang is not going to sound the same; and I am glad for that. Brandy really can sing and has an amazing raspy voice; that’s the voice she was blessed with. I don’t feel every song an artist puts out there; but I will say I am a fan of real singers…Brandy included.

At the end of the day everyone is entitled to their own opinion. If Cheers thinks Brandy’s voice is mediocre, that’s his opinion, and some of those opinions will naturally be challenged. So as everyone else did I’ll give my opinion as well. There are SO many people in the industry that call Brandy, one of(one of, not the) the best vocalists of our generation of R&B. Examples, Jasmine Sullivan, Chris Brown, Tank, K. Michelle, Dawn Richard, Keyshia Cole, and Melanie Fiona just to name a few. Even your girl Rihanna said while recording “Good Girl Gone Bad”, she told her producers she wanted to create an album like Brandy’s “Afrodisiac”. People in the industry call her the vocal bible for a reason. I’m going to have to co-sign with Neil on his comment and say just because she can’t do what Whitney Houston did doesn’t mean she’s mediocre. There’s only one Whitney Houston, just like there is only one Brandy out there. But people who can actually sing or study music, and know everything Brandy is vocally capable of and isn’t just making some assumption off of a few singles they heard would never intelligently make that “mediocre” comment. And what cracks me up the most is that you chose to say that you sing in your bathroom all the time and it sounds very nice. Are you joking? I promise you, you do not sound even close to what Brandy can do and does all the time.Her runs, her melodic harmonies, and even her vocal range, power, and control is unmatchable THESE DAYS. @ CHEERS: I would just add that Brandy’s range is kinda’ dope. Whitney and J Hud, although dope, do not have exceptional ranges (imo. Mariah or Christina have exceptional ranges). Power, tone, breath and vocal control were Whitney’s gifts. Jhud-power. They stay in their high registers for the most part. Bran tends to use her lows and highs on many of her records. Tone=Brandy sorry! Runs, vocal acrobats, ad libs, harmonies, improvising…whatever you wanna’ call those things=BRANDY! I get that these things don’t stand out to everyone…but if you’re into those things listen closely. I would recommend songs like “Nothing” off of Full Moon…or hell the whole album. Or try an unreleased track “Sweet Nothings” if you’re unconvinced about that tone and how she can emulate or project emotion.

@Cheers…this is what upsets me…just because brandy cannot sing Whitney or Mariah notes…doesn’t make her any less of a singer…she is an Alto and she sings in her range really well…she is one of the best alto singers in the game right now….and did you really just say you would rather hear TONI Braxton then Brandy..I mean really…I think Brandy is a great vocal role model for girls out there today who are altos and afraid that just because they can’t sing Mariah notes..that they will not have sucess in the industry…I can go on and on…obviously I’m an alto also…LOL

Wow wow wow WOOOOW!!! THANK YOU!!!! Brandy is a musician’s vocalist….meaning it really takes someone “with ears” to understand what she does….people who know music know what i mean by “ears”. Brandy doesnt go for the obvious or highest notes….she doesnt only “hear” 1-3-5 chords, so the average listener isnt impressed by her. Musicians,on the other hand will know that vocally, Brandy is to be feared.

Alright so here’s my take:

The only thing that’s really selling in todays market is pop. So really for any artist to make it big today they need to be strictly pop (Lady Gaga, Rihanna) or find a way to adapt to the pop world (Nicki Minaj, Beyonce). Back in the day Brandy could make just as much money as artist now b/c ppl were actually buying cds. So Brandy has to decide if she will conform to the pop world or remain the true R&B artist she is. And judging by this single she has decided to stay true to herself. So if the album is anything like this song or even Put it Down. It will be amazing. Good music lasts!!! It may not sell but it will last. And on the Afrodisiac album she said she was thinking about quitting music and that she’s not really hurting for money. So Brandy, with that said, I appreciate you for sticking true to who you are musically and giving our generation music that I could easily let my kids and grandkids listen to.

Thank you. I hope she never changes either. She has made so many hits that even if she wanted to stop singing her music will still be able to be played in years to come. People have a right to their own opinion if they don’t think she’s that great. That’s cool. But I really would like to know what chick is out right now doing it? To me Jennifer Hudson can sing but her voice doesn’t do anything for me. When I hear Whitney sing it take me somewhere else. If anybody’s name should come up with Whitney out of these young girls to me it’s Christina Aguleria. The girl can blow. I don’t know I guess I really listen when people sing. To really get a feel of Brandy’s voice people should listen to this one song called A Capella on her human album. What she does in that song is truly amazing but again it’s just my opinion.

lol…that’s the funny part. Most of the young artists now have copied her style to a large degree (from Frank Ocean, Chris Brown, Melanie Fiona, and Dawn Richard), but she doesn’t seem to get the credit she deserves. They are open about their love for her, but the general public is asleep.

Brandy makes timeless music, this is r&b to its needy greedy.. when PUT it DOWN came out people are like. UGH but its risky and catchy yet climbing the charts. but she puts a classic record and shes actually singing about LOVE. Painting a picture and killing the ad libs. the hook when she pauses, JUST BRANDYYYY is everything. I commend Brandy for giving her fans what they been asking for and staying true to herself in the game. BROCKA never left. she took a chance to marinate in her music and her artistry. That is a true entertainer not to mention an great singer.
