NEWS: GABBY DOUGLAS MAKES HISTORY AT THE 2012 OLYMPICS! + PHOTOS!

August 2nd, 2012

16 year-old Gabrielle “Gabby” Douglas of the United States has made history. She won the gold medal in the Artistic Gymnastics Women’s Individual All-Around final on Day 6 of the London 2012 Olympic Games Thursday (August 2) in London, England.

She is the first black woman to do so. Her style, confidence, and resolve could not be matched. This is her 2nd gold medal, after winning one earlier this week in the team finals.

And get this, Douglas still has two more chances for medals. She has qualified for the uneven bars and balance beam event finals. I have a feeling she may end up with 4 Gold medals at the end..

First of all I would like to say congratulations to Gabby’s monumental achievement of winning the Gold medal in her first senior Olympics. It is so sad that on this great day, comments were made about the state of her hair, me personally I LOVE her hair, I love the fact that she was focused on the job at hand and thank god she didnt go for the quick fix of sticking a weave on her head just to please the masses that clearly think her hair is more important than her great achievement. Gabby, well done and its not about your hair its about the gold medal from your London Supporters:-)

Agreed, I was disgusted that her hair became such a big issue. Obviously people take “internet courage” to another level especially on a child. But I’m so PROUD of you Gabby, I love your smile and your confidence in yourself!! Keep doing you because you are awesome! Thanks for representing 757 and the whole USA!!!! Stay blessed.

@FLYMO, DBLOCK and SEVN, you three are the only ones trying to make this an issue on CL. No one else mentioned that topic. Are you the same person piling on to start $#it?

@Indigo, Okay, now I get it, but Angel could get a 1 point deduction for not sticking the landing! :) How about just saying, “she’s the first African-American female” or the “first black female”. Period. Saying, “you know what we mean” always sounds like a booby-trap. I actually thought she was talking about the fact that Gabby’s just a “itty-bitty” person. In most Countries, she would be concidered a woman at age 16. Even lower in some places. “You know what I mean”?

Of course, black people would tweet about her hair. They were to busy trying to find reasons to dislike her being there. Scared of the unknown. It’s funny because those white people are probably more accepting of her hair and body than black folks are. I am sure without a doubt black folks she know call her skinny as hell and thinks she needs a front lace on that skull.

    Congrats Gabby continue to strive!!!

I agree that black folks lose their sh*t over hair. However, I try to remember that black people didn’t just wake up one day out of the blue and think “eww, look at our nappy hair, so ugly…gotta go fry it up and lay it to the side!”. It’s a backwards mindset that has taken root amongst American blacks (and other blacks of the diaspora) after years of internalizing racism. Now, as many people would perceive, white racism has been taken out of the equation. However, these current displays of black foolishness are the branches, white racism is the root that people don’t see or choose to ignore.

Don’t get me wrong, black people are not faultless in this. Delusional maybe. Some are even stupid. But remembering how things started helps me not to lose patience with “my people”, for lack of a better term.

White people have a way of twisting things, so I don’t fall for that “white people are more accepting” bullcrap. Even though it may appear to be so. Like how they want to now say that scientifically race doesn’t exist but back when they were sailing around the world colonizing every damn piece of land they touched, “race” was crucial. I just don’t really trust them much.

It was not only black women who were deriding her hair if you look at some of the tweets about it. Predominately black women, but not only. I personally know a few black men who very much prefer some type of straight hair on a woman (real or not), the men in my family included. I’ve seen that type of attitude among men and women, (mostly women though can’t deny that).

In regards to the other issues plaguing blacks hair isn’t that important. But since the subject came up…

Flying squirrel? Maybe, that’s why she was gnawing at the medal? Black women though should be ashamed for going in on this young lady. She’s an athletic woman. Her hair is probably the least of her concerns at the damn Olympics. She’s competing on a global level and going down in the BOOKS as an icon. She can worry about her hair later. Black women also do this to compete for their males attention though. There are dudes that love a long and silky because they associate it with femininity. Also, the weight. I saw comments about her being a skinny ass. I was just like are you serious? She’s in better shape than 98% of Americans. Our people are naturally talented in this kind of shit too. Because, if you go in the hood when folks throw out their mattresses. Kids just be flipping and doing all sorts of random shits on mattresses. BUT BACK TO THE HAIR, Eurocentricism is everywhere. It’s made us hate the very things that make us who we are as we are and put up false ideals. It’s not just affecting African American women. Women of “Melanin,” in general are all battling some sort of internal struggle of self. Indian women are bleaching their skin. Pan-Asian women also value light skin (bleaching) and believe it or not HAIR issues as well – more and more asians are going blonde. You will see white women pay great money to get perms to have curly/kinky hair. You will see them pump their faces with all sorts of chemicals and burn their skin to the point of skin cancer.

I am sorry if it came off as me taking a jab at her? I don’t think anything was wrong with her hair in the first place. That girl was probably shitting bricks just being there…her hair was the least of her concerns.

      @ REHABKID

Yes, there are many sports that so-called black people would dominate rather easily but our people do not have the funds or the outlet to have access to it. Sports like swimming, tennis, golf, and gymnastics are rather exclusive sports, which is why they are predominantly caucasian. The pommel horse event is based on a drill that black men during the Parthian Empire (Acts 2:5-9)would do to train on how to mount and dismount their horse during battle. They needed to be able to fire arrows backwards over their shoulder after they mounted their horse in one quick move. That’s where the term “parting shot” comes from. Here’s a photo of a Parthian:

I also agree that the indigenous women have a terrible self-image, and it causes them to either submit to so-called “Eurocentric” ideals of beauty or to overcompensate for their brain-washing by going completely psycho in the other direction in trying to be over-righteous by walking around with incense sticks in each hand and a towel wrapped around their head, trying to force their carnal understanding of “blackness” on others lol. Our people always styled their hair in different ways, and straightening techniques go back to the ancient time when the white man was still in the caves. In the scriptures, there is an apparatus known as a “crisping pin”, which is what people used to style or straighten their hair (Isaiah 3:22). Here’s King John of England:

Black women will always obsess over their hair because it is her glory (I Cor 11:15: “But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for [her] hair is given her for a covering.”). Many of these sisters don’t have any d@mn hair so they don’t have any glory lol.

@Judah, so why is it, many black females with long hair feel so insecure? They have to let it be known w/o anyone asking “My hair was down my back” “I have Indian in my family,my dad was part____” They could be the first to point out another female not having long hair..which is a sign of insecurities. Is it because of comments like yours, saying women with shorter hair have no glory? Or is it because we stress about what’s on top of the head, rather then what’s in the head? If you know who you are,and you stand for something, your hair is your business..lol It’s for you to wash, style and do what ever..

It’s funny that you ask that question and you said what you said, because I addressed that in a comment to “Rehabkid” but it was moderated. Long hair has always been viewed as a sign of femininity. Black people have always styled it in different ways, and STRAIGHTENED IT, not just to look like the caucasian. I personally could care less if a female straightens their hair or keeps it natural. Alot of females that try to attach “blackness” to their hairstyle are usually phony. In the scriptures, the Lord tells us that he will smite (curse) the crown of the black woman, meaning He would put the spirit on her to have problems with her hair, issues with herself and her hair, and destroy her hair herself because of her issues (Isaiah 3:16,17 “Moreover the LORD saith, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing [as] they go, and making a tinkling with their feet: Therefore the Lord will smite with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will discover their secret parts.”).

      @ LISA

No, the issue with the black woman’s hair is a manifestation of her spiritual issues. It is similar to the Star Wars movies lol. As Anakin Skywalker continued to move towards the dark side spiritually, his body came to reflect that by being more and more scarified until he lost everything and was encased in a mask and armor.

      @ INDIGO

The black woman can get her glory back in order and lose all the issues that she has, including her hair issues on her own. Those black women who choose to pursue a man of another race to give their child “good hair” or “less negroid features” do so as a workaround maneuver that they can utilize instead of addressing the real issue, which is restoring ORDER, which would involve SUBMISSION TO THE BLACK MAN lol. Caucasians actually know that their traits are both RECESSIVE and DEGENERATIVE, and actually want woolly hair. That is why on Halloween, their two favorite costumes are dressing up as DEV!LS and dressing up in blackface with afro wigs.

Yes they are,and they don’t know any better. They don’t know the true meaning of SELF importance..They are too busy trying to convince others they are important;which many times is based on false attributes..The same goes for a lot of black males.

@indigo when you say a non black man – you mean the black female dating outside of her own? because, black women in hollywood do it but as an overall. Hell no. Black women are reluctant to date outside of their race. That’s why so many are in a form of polygamy, single and miserable now.

Black masculinity and femininity needs to be reestablished. Currently, there is like a swamping taken place due to the economic situation we are in. The black woman also kind of does need to know her place. I don’t mean to say that in a wrong or disrespectful manner. We know young women graduating from great universities going to med school, law school, business school etc. These women are going to be single. They have these outrageous expectations of the kind of man they want. They aren’t looking at the situation they are in and more importantly than that they aren’t willing to submit to let him be a man.

@Rehabkid… What you talkin bout Willis? lol

“Black women are reluctant to date outside of their race” Are you saying this is a bad thing? Please explain.

“That’s why so many are in a form of polygamy, single and miserable now” What does this have to do with them not dating outside their race? Take Hugh Hefs and his Playboy Bunnies..These women sign up to be apart of a polygamy set up, with a man that they don’t love..and they aren’t black. So if the black male is a pimp or has a lot of money,it’s alright to be in a polygamy set up?

When I say non black man,I mean someone that checked OTHER than negro on their 2010 Census. lol..

Look at the black women in Hollywood, who are they around most of the time? You are most likely to marry someone from your peer group. But what is your arguement/point?

I didn’t say anything about “dating” outside their race.. I said “And this is why many black women feel if they had children with a man that could give them “glory”,a non black man..” I’m talking about reproducing, not dating, polgamy, being single or miserble..

What comes first, the chicken or the egg…? The black woman forgetting her importance or black men making her feel less than, causing her not to know her importance, causing the black man to make her feel less than? And after seeing it spelled out, this issue affects many.

@Indigo – I think I was just asking about dating outside the race because, I don’t know many sisters that date outside their race. In fact, I went to a pretty damn great school and most of those sisters on an integrated campus REFUSED to date outside their race. The Latino, Asian, and just about every other girl on that campus seemed to be open to dating outside of their race. But the black women. Even the ones that were super insecure still wanted a brother. They even mocked this one young lady from Spain (white girl) because she loved black men. I mean she wasn’t a whore but you wouldn’t see her mess with a man that wasn’t dark skin. She loved the ground that black men walked on and she discussed how in Spain – interracial dating wasn’t that big of a deal – black girls on campus hated her guts she was with every black man they deemed to be dreamy. HISTORY tells us that the moors fucked down those women reckless. But back to the story, —– They are building prisons off of third and fourth graders reading scores in inner city communities. Primarily black and latino boys. With that being said, women make up majority of all universities and college campuses they out number men PERIOD. In the global perspective they out number men overall. Black educated women are finding themselves in really interesting situations. These sisters have worked hard to acquire an education and a stable life for themselves. They have high expectation of what they want in a man. Unfortunately, not all these brothers are going to be their match. What I am saying is that why not look into dating another man of melanin just not an African American man? It’s obvious that these women struggle to submit. I know a girl who is a dermatologist and she is drop dead gorgeous and single. She’s nearly 30 and she is scared shitless. She makes 175K plus; very few of the black men out here are going to match her and then those that do might not want to put up with her charades. She needs to reconsider, reevaluate, or date outside of her race. That’s all I am saying. NOT A BAD THING, just a reality check. A brother with a education has options…
Polygamy is cool if the man has the resources to provide for that community. Most women are going to be in a form of it one way or another. The difference between Hugh Hefner and these black women baby fathers. Hugh has DOUGH. His women are kepted; they also know their place; they aren’t running to the state and getting them involved in their affairs.

Mormon women are also practicing polygamy but they aren’t in the same situation as black women either. They have a full understanding of where the place is in the home and the understanding of why they are doing what they are doing for their community to function and be productive to survive. Black women are not in that same head space. No comparison. A black woman wants her mans nuts as earrings and his dick is probably the only time they understand each other. Sorry for being crass.
I associate reproducing with marriage. I have always thought of first you court the young lady, and then you eventually want to build ties with the young lady to progress the relationship into something more possibly marriage then the baby carriage and all of that. Our community is super fucked up that these women are allowing themselves to have babies out of wedlock and not being embarrassed of letting their children grow up in fatherless homes. It’s bad. Reproducing with a man from another race and not showcasing to him the value of getting to know your womanhood or ‘glory,’ only showcases how confused the black woman really is…so the baby might be fair skin, good hair, and cute eyes? Where is there daddy? I am not trying to be rude when I say this either. Both the black man and the black woman need some serious readjustments and reality checks. There is too much finger pointing and not enough accountability.

@Indigo – You have already disregarded me from the jump. Not only that your comment on Friday, August 3, 2012 at 3:26 you asked me to please explain and I broke down everything you mentioned and more. It wasn’t just out of thin air. You dismissed my long previous comment prior and even admitted to not even reading my earlier post because of cheeky commentary. African Militants do not suggest to African American women to date outside their race. I did. Because, often more than not I hear black women compare about their single situation. Especially, black women that have acquired some format of success. But you say I am making this up out of thin air you said it was all imaginary? The black woman faces a lot of challenges her challenges are just as complicated as the black males experience. While, I might never understand her experience 100% that doesn’t mean I can’t see or understand some of the obvious poisons that she faces. I do not need Cornel West, Michael Eric Dyson, Sister Souljah, or any other negro sponsored by some large corporation to tell me what I personally see myself.
Lastly, polygamy isn’t a bad option for sisters. Most of them might benefit submitting in a form of honest polygamy than just being a baby momma. They might actually be happier.

That’s exactly how I felt like a proud big sister who doesn’t even know her LOL. I think that is what’s best about Gabby, her personality and the way she carries herself is so inviting that you can’t help but root her.

@TAJ ,,,SO TRUE GABBY IS A POWER HOUSE , AND SHE MADE A HELL OF A STATEMENT .I LOOKED AT HER AND FELT HER GRACE AND STRENGTH AND HER TRUE POWER AND CONFIDENCE IN HER SELF. GABBY WAS FULL OF GRACE , BUT YET SHE WAS ABLE TO SHOW THE WORLD HER POWER TO OVERCOME AND RRISE ABOVE THE REST . AND ALL THE NATIONAL COMPETITOR’S AND PEER’S FELT AND SAW THAT POWER .

Only one who devotes himself to a cause with his whole strength and soul can be a true master. For this reason mastery demands all of a person.

If u look at Oprah as a lil girl I’m sure u will agree but yeah Kimberly too I agree. Wonder if acting is in Gabby’s future? I can see Gabby acting alongside Kim in a movie as relatives, a daughter role for Gabby or lil sis to Kim :) .

Her body is bananas! Athletic and very toned. Very proud of her…maybe her Asian coach gave her the nickname? Perhaps Asians have a specific view of squirrels? Lol

    STOP

I wish that this beautiful young lady would stop people from referring to her as an animal There is nothing cute or endearing about her being referred to as a flying squirrel.

Good luck and continued success, Gabrielle!

(sigh…) The nickname “Flying Squirrel” is because of her uneven bars routine. No one in the world gets as much air as Gabby and can navigate between the two bars as well. Even for elite gymnasts the height she gets is crazy. The team coordinator said it off the top of her head after watching her routine the first time and being amazed and the name stuck. Not everything in the world is about race and who’s trying to destroy the image of black people! PLEASE just let Gabby have her moment! She has completed a tremendous accomplishment (both as an African American and an American gymnast) and that should be celebrated.

      @ JUST a tHOUGHT

In looking up the origin of the nickname, I stumbled across an interview that Dominique Dawes gave in which she stated that SHE (Dominique Dawes that is) hates the nickname and that she found it inappropriate. Nobody is trying to take away her “moment” of being used as a globalization pawn, or stopping you from feeling closer to caucasians through her victory. Alot of you pea-brained n!ggers need to stop reading my comments if they bother you so much lol.

      1) No one said my comment was directed towards you. But I do find it interesting you assume it was. Looking for argument and an opportunity to try to insult someone? 2) Don’t even bring Dominique Dawes into this. She has 100% of my respect and I value her opinion – the difference is she knows the origin of the name. I believe she offered “Doin’ It Douglas” as an alterative. Better? 3) Perhaps YOU need to stop reading other people’s comments. It’s really a shame, for someone who seems to be somewhat intellectual you ruin it by, well, typing in the comments section. I’m done….time to go feel closer to a Caucasian.

Oh ok, so who was your comment in reference to lol? I was the first person on this thread, from what I’ve seen, to bring up her nickname.

What’s sad if she was white there would be no focus on her hair or color or anything. And the worse part is that black people are the ones that will bring out the negative comments first. And Judah, I like dreads, braids, natural hairstyles because they are easy to maintain. It has nothing to do with being white. Sometimes it’s all about lifestyle and preferences. I work hard, married to a beautiful black man and we have a beautiful black daughter that learned to read at the age of 2. We own a house and I consider us successful. People will probably hate on me and say something negative but it’s okay. I still will live life and die a happy person. I hope Gabby continues to strive and reach every goal that she wants to. Despite the crap that everyone says it doesn’t matter, because regardless she will live her life, and hopefully to the fullest.

Awesome, Fantastic Achievement…we need to really pay attention to the greatness that comes from African/African American people…Melanin, it do what it do…We were great when we hit American soil…We don’t know our history, we don’t realize that within each and everyone of us is greatness…focus, dedication, and perseverance and we’re making history as we’ve always done…We’ve been contributing to the world in a mighty way since the beginning of time…we are the MIGHTIEST OF THE MIGHTY…Go Gabby!!!! What an inspiration for all people!

    Aha!

is’nt that asian man her coach? well the asians have a thing for animal names, for instance the year of the dragon. or the year of the rooster. leaping tiger, etc. they do things like that. so maybe “flying squirrel” just came to mind when he saw her flying on those uneven bars.

Besides, what’s wrong with taking inspiration from God’s creation? Ali said he’d “float like a butterfly and sting like a bee”. Dennis Rodman was the worm. Ron O’Neal was the “Superfly”. And, Tiger Woods was a “Tiger”. And, Gabby is the “flying squirrel”. In each case, the name is used to describe a near supernatural ability that the person has. Calvin changed his nickname from Snoop Dogg to Snoop Lion after he saw the ganja in Jamaica. Bow-Wow is just a name for a little dog. So, don’t get to upset over nicknames unless its something like, “ape, chicken, skunk, duck, elephant, gorilla, snake or monkey.” Squirrel, rabbit, bird, eagle and shark are user friendly and more acceptable. And, let’s not forget, squirrels really can’t fly!

Black women doing it again, talking about another black woman like they ran off Usher’s ex-wife, these same weave heads at it again. Black women do love white women just like black men, no different. A black woman will love on a white woman and hate on a black woman in a second. Gabby at 16yrs old was about business and the black witches talking about hair. Just like everyday. Black men keep marrying and dating outside your race because the black witch is still dominate. Just like black women on the job, wanting to laugh and eat and barely work and then roll their eyes at the black woman about her business while ignoring and loving on the white woman about her business at the same place. Im so glad she had a white host family. Because if she had of lived with a black host family, the black girls in the family would have tried to fight her or try to make her eat bad food or somehow try to get her off her game.
