‘ROUND THE WAY: GABBY DOUGLAS SPEAKS ON THE NEGATIVE COMMENTS ABOUT HER HAIR

August 6th, 2012

While Gold Medal gymnast Gabby Douglas was busy making history, a few people on twitter were more focused on her hair. This became a big topic last week on the blogs and now the 16 year-old has finally spoke about her hair critics. Check out what she said:

“I don’t know where this is coming from. What’s wrong with my hair? I’m like, ‘I just made history and people are focused on my hair?’ It can be bald or short, it doesn’t matter about (my) hair.”

Douglas uses gel, clips and a ponytail holder to keep things in place while she competes, a style she’s worn for years.

“Nothing is going to change,” she said. “I’m going to wear my hair like this during beam and bar finals. You might as well just stop talking about it. I don’t think people should be worried about that. We’re all champions and we’re all winners. I just say that it’s kind of, a stupid and crazy thought to think about my hair.” [ SOURCE ]

In related news, you can catch Gabby compete for two more gold medals for the uneven bars and for the balance beam this week. You can also see her face on the cover of the Corn Flakes box this fall. Go girl!

she should of mentioned what it really was, jealousy and crabs in the barrel mentality.

no no we as blk ppl can’t be excited for another especially when it’s something this major. we must nitpick and tear each other down.

idk where the hell sisterhood went but it needs to one back.

Here’s what I’ve come to realize: people who claim only blacks are jealous hearted/crabs in a barrel/etc. are people who only hang out with other black people. If your circle of friends was broader or more racially diverse you’d realize that jealousy is characteristic of all people, not just blacks or women. Perhaps it’s showcased differently among cultures or genders, but the fact still remains that it’s inherent to all people. Furthermore, it’s becoming a trite, played out and lazy explanation.

      Thank you and good night.

Yes, jealousy does exist, but no other race of women HATE to see ANY woman of the SAME race become successful. This mindset is only prevalent in the black community. Every other race, for the most part, try to uplift and help one another…we DO NOT.

Wow, I love her even more now. Yas, this is one strong lil sista. She make me real proud and prouder now. Ppl can have this trifling, petty, negative and small-minded way of thinking and black people r the worse for wear for it. Why is it so hard for people and black people to COLLECTIVELY look at the big picture. What if Gabby had put a little blonde in her hair? Because of how she choose to wear her hair does not say she is not comfortable in her own skin. This mentality is a reason why we at the bottom as a people a stay there just crawling over each other, fallen and can’t get up. We at the bottom economically, socially, academically, mentally, intellectually and would continue along this path with our behavior and attitudes if we can’t/dont/wont change this toxic way collectively. #ilovegabbymorenow.

Her response showed maturity, she could have went there with something negative but she decided to stay what she is; a young lady with class. She is driven and focused and THAT attitude will carry her a long way; we all should be so lucky to have an ounce of her determination. Most of us can’t make a decision on what to eat for dinner, let alone make a decision to get to the next level by moving away from her family. Her coach said he wasn’t going to take her because he didn’t know anything about her; but she begged him, worked hard; and it payed off. So for those so quick to talk about everything BUT her wonderful accomplishments; go sit down and think of some goals to accomplish…OTHER THAN being on an internet blog being the king and queens of negativity.

Ms Hay-Mon, you are oh so right, she said just what she was suppose to say for she is a champion, and she represent America, I feel as a black Senior Citizen very proud of Gabby, you can tell from her comment that that is one of the reasons she is a champion, and have made history. Keep up the good work baby and don’t listen to the negativity, because they are the ones that want to take your place, wishful thinkingl

We group and define ourselves according to what makes us feel comfortable. Anyone who doesn’t subscribe to the beliefs of the group and extends themselves to achieve something bigger is picked apart and ridiculed because they challenge the established norm of the said unit. We created a bubble to keep ourselves from taking ownership in becoming a greater people, and what’s got folks upset is that Gabby took a real stab at that and did it on a global scale. Go Gabby!!

She is AWESOMELY WONDERFULLY FOCUSED AND SHE’S A CHAMPION. No doubt! However, we all know we trip about our hair. I don’t think the conversations about her hair is about negating her excellence. It was just commentary. The gel did look unattractive but it doesn’t matter because she’s a winner. Her focus isn’t her hair like the masses of Black women. Perhaps, if we didn’t focus so much on outer appearances, we could get in touch with our inner greatness as Gabby has. I saw that gel on her hair and I thought “hmm,” but I kept it moving because she’s so awesome that you could only focus on that for a split second and then be in awe of her talent. I don’t “think” people were hating, just having that crazy hair commentary like we always do. Our hair is one of the manifestations of our insanity from trying to exist within this fake White definition of beauty.

Yes, this fake story is a sour grapes by the American white establishment media that this young woman dominated a historically (as far as the modern incarnation of the Olympics is concerned) “caucasian” sport. Some simple-minded black females may have jumped on it, but this comes from the caveman lol. If a black man ever comes to dominate swiimming and shatters Phelps’s records, you can expect some of the same.

She has 2 gold metals so far, one for the team competition and one for the all around, and some of these folks are bitter that they didnt acheive that much before they were even in college.

She is an amazing talent, and some folks are like crabs in a barrel. The need to pull someone down to feel better about their situation. Some folks prioritize the wrong things. This girl has to do amazing feats, including doing impressive acrobatics on bar as wide as a line in a parking lot, and WHAT PEOPLE DECIDED TO CONCERN THEMSELVES WITH IS HER HAIR? If she listened to some folks, they would have her sitting on the bench with a hot comb when she should be focusing on her next event.

The comments were just stupid and made no sense and that’s what she was basically getting at in her response. Gabby obviously doesn’t associate with ghetto people and is an African American who grew up around different races and cultures. You can tell by how she carries herself and talks that she was raised right and hung around “non-urban” people.
It’s funny because when I was on other big blogs, many of the white people (facebook pics showed their race) were like… “Huh? What’s wrong with her hair? Don’t all athletes pull their hair back?” I was so glad that they thought it was just some stupid people making up something senseless because she won and didn’t think it had anything to do with black hair and “nappiness.” This is so embarrassing! How come when blacks make it in mainstream or in a “white” field, something negative has to be said that is related to their race?
I’m still trying to figure out what the heck the comments were about? The hair was pulled back… people were acting like she wore a “natural black hair style in an afro” or something. She finally made it big and it’s good to see a young, African American female win in something that is predominately white. I wish our people would get to the point where we are “just as good” or equal as the “top race” in America.

anyone who has a problem with her hair is really just stupid and not a black female. any black female who has ever been involved in any kind of sports knows that it is almost impossible for your hair to look prim and proper at all times.

this young lady is dedicated to her sport so making sure she does not sweat out her perm is not even on her priority list and it shouldn’t be on anyone else’s either.

but i will say that i did laugh at all the clips she had around her ponytail. but i have had to do the same thing when i played sports in high school. Gabby just needs to stay happy and nappy!!!!

Only hate Willow because she is not rapping or being hood because none of you concerned with Bow wow when he was a kid rapping and going on tour or all the other black kids singers because they were doing stereotypical R&B and rap. HAIR AND MONKEY COMMERCIAL

Where exactly did this hair controversy come from? And if there is any truth to it, who said that other blacks were the ones talking????? Anyone can put something on the internet and pretend to be of a certain race!

Also, like others mentioned, the same powers that be who made this controversy up are most likely the same ones that aired the monkey commercial right after she won gold.

I wish more people around the world would stop falling for this obvious ploy to undermine this young woman’s achievement. It also only serves to pit blacks against each other in light of such a great moment in African American history.

I agree. I did not hear or read this story before. This is white America starting this up. They have an issue with Gabby being a black girl and achieving what she has. This is exactly what they want. Black women bashing black women. We as a people have to stop feeding into everything that they feed us and focus on the big picture. They will do anything to have our minds worry about something so petty then what’s really going on in this world. The girl is amazing period and they know that but they also hate it. I agree that black women can bash each other a lot and hate to no extent but white women, asian women and indian women do it all the same. I see it everyday. People please really stop listening to these clear folks. Their day is coming soon and they know it so they are going extra hard to create mayheim wherever they can.
