I tuned into 106& Park for the first time in a long time on September 11, 2012 due to my hectic workload in the MA program that I am currently enrolled. To say the least, I was highly disappointed in the presentation of the show, as well as the diction/ readability/ and intelligence of the hosts. The premise of the show is geared towards the upliftment and support of young people of color–featuring hosts that can barely pronounce and enunciate words, lack in presentation skills, and are unprofessional does not correlate with the image the show was built on.
Unfortunately, over the years (I am currently 24 years old) I have seen a shift in the portrayal, images, and messages being conveyed to the young audience that tunes in to view the program. I truly believe that 106 & Park needs to be revamped in its entirety. I am saddened at the departure of Raquel Roxanne Diaz and Terrence Jenkins. However, if the show should continue into its 13th year, it needs a clear vision and new approach to win that once dedicated and attuned audience that it once captivated during the era when Shad Gregory Moss and Destiny’s Child reigned.
To put it quite simply, BET should select more constructive hosts and create a story line that correlates with the issues of today’s colored youth (i.e., job issues, healthy relationships, family struggles, education, etc.). More than just music, young people need to be delivered messages that are applicable to their livelihood–these messages should not be beaten to death, but they should not be summed up in a mere 30 seconds either. Furthermore, although some of the celebrities that stop by the show for guest appearances are relatable, they do not represent the majority of young colored youth–therefore, the emphasis on celebrities/ actual issues of today’s youth should be balanced. I highly suggest that BET begin this change by taking a poll of the interest of young people (one that is geared towards social issues apart from aesthetics/Snapbacks/louboutins). I yearn for the days of Teen Summit, and even the Basement with Tyga (these shows were informative and thorough). The aforementioned shows actually provided young audience members with depth instead of breath. Lastly, with elections around the corner it is vital that the messages that are conveyed to the young audience that tune into 106 & Park is clear, concise, and accurate. Our livelihoods are at stake; since BET caters to a large young Black audience it is important that elections/voting messages are constantly and properly reiterated throughout the show.
In closing, I hope that this letter is read by someone that actually cares about the colored youth of today. I understand that I am just one person, but like Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, like Sojourner Truth , like Malcolm X, like Rosa Parks, and like Martin Luther King, Jr., change begins with the pursuant and advocacy of an individual voice.
I hope to see more representation of individuals like myself on my favorite network in the near future.
