Even though ESSENCE MAGAZINE recycles the same people over and over for their covers, this photo of singer-actress Jill Scott is amazing. Love this look on her. What do you think?

Beautiful. Nice to see Jill au naturel.
I agree.
COSIGN.
This is a great look for Jill.
Beautiful and talented.
It’s quite comical how these misguided and brainwashed black women look to other misguided and brainwashed black women for upliftment and encouragement. Doesnt matter if she is fat, slim, natural hair or weaved up, Jill Scott is no different from the other wh0res of the industry.
What, where did that come from. Do you have a mother? Would you appreciate someone calling your mom a whore? Jill Scott is a mother & someones child, watch what you say. WOW! that is way off base. SMH..
Exactly…..and “Essence” is another white jew owned magazine that promotes that chronically self-hateful mentality and victimization role that plagues most of these black females today.
@surprise no mother should be in public discussing being “dickmatized” along with all the other whorish babble that comes out of her mouth so please have a seat and watch what YOU say. Please tell me what this woman who has children for different men and cant keep a man more than 5 minutes, has done for this world that makes her worthy of honor and respect???? I’ll wait….
MA”AT, she has ONE son so how would that be children from a whole bunch of different people?
@MA’AT Jill Scott has one child. So I’m still confused about your comment, please explain!! And all black women are not brain washed. You can’t be black, I refuse to believe that.
Absolutely beautiful.
AGREE!
WOW someone is seriously scorned; to come out the gates like that over a photo. I thought the title of this clip is “Jill Scott Looks Stunning On Essence”; AND CL asked what we thought about the PHOTO. How the contents of the magazine (which no one was commenting on, just the photo) became an attack on black women. WOW; sounds personal to me. I hope someone gets help for their anger management…LOL SMH
This is a d*mn shame. The white man can make a cellphone as powerful as a desktop PC, put a man on the moon (supposedly), build an airplane, but you mean to tell me he can’t find a cure for the black woman’s baldness?
Lmaoo…..actually the black man invented the cellphone and personal PC, but I get your point.
@ JUDAH
I all ready knew about Mark Dean.
@ HELLRAZER
Yes. Henry Sampson as well.
lmaooo exactly!
Lol I spelled already wrong
Essence is wickedly wack!! I hate the cover… The same thing every month. I hate Jill’s hair and makeup.
Love her makeup but hate her hair. Why do black women feel they need to chop their hair off like Africans and go natural? You would never see Beyonce do something as such! #teamperm
So Africans are chopping their hair off or are they already bald and we are immulating them? really? Where do you all come up with these statements and what does Beyonce have to do with it. Stop trying to pattern yourself after a celebrity and do you!!! You will be much happier!
Remember most celebs wear weaves and it takes their hair out, so why not chop it off and let it grow back naturally, but why put Beyonce in this comment, Beyonce will NEVER show her real hair anyway. We know she has a nice length but you best believe she has a hook up on 99.99% of the time!
Either your an idiot, you did this for reaction, or our world is really that jacked up today I’m going to go with the last thought!
And I hope Beyonce does one day wear her own hair texture so people can stop being so surprised by what our hair really looks like and that we don’t have hair that look like white women’s hair.
These magazine’s always lighten these black women’s skin SMDH
And WHITE Magazines always tan up the white girls who want our creamy skin just like you do.
Black people are not the only people who have dark skin
All races except the Caucasian race have brown skin, this is where the word “HUMAN” comes from. You seem like you have self- hatred issues (as all black women do) so your projecting your bullsh*t off on the first person who recognizes how much you lust to be light-skinned .
You are always so small minded and mamomthly ignorant. I am “light skinned” and have no self hatred. And when did you get to be an athority on what black women do are you secretly a black woman????
@Lisa…yes, Hellrazer is a female. I don’t think, she’s thinks she’s black… She’s more like the “black sheep”.
@LISA and that whor*e INDIGO
I’m probably a better black women (and I’m a man) than both of you whor*s could ever be because every tribe of man knows that you black women have no femininity whatsoever. You don’t cook, you don’t clean you don’t do sh*t but work for the white man and have wild bast*rd children
I sure hope Hellrazer isn’t a female…
@ CHEERS
yeah Because we all know you’ve f*cked yourself to my commentary plenty of times. Don’t pay these morons any attention they’re just your typical Americanized black women.
What? What a harsh thing to say
@ CHEERS
I WAS JUST PLAYING
Oh okay
Are you still taking me to see Brandy this weekend?
@CHEERS
yes, so make sure you wear your” freakum dress”.
LOL
@CHEERS… What type of male says,”freakum dress”?????
If you can’t tell this is a female/flammer you’ve been carrying on with… LOL
I’m probably a better black women (and I’m a man) than both of you whor*s could ever be because every tribe of man knows that you black women have no femininity whatsoever. You don’t cook, you don’t clean you don’t do sh*t but work for the white man and have wild bast*rd children
So now who is the confused idiot…oh yeah that would be you! If we had no femininity then why are we the one’s you secretly want to be with. And if we didn’t cook or clean why were we enslaved for those specific jobs. You are such an assho$$. And by the way I only have a child by my husband which would make them legitimate and not like you….trash.
@
Lisa I don’t know what your talking about and neither do you. Do yourself a favor a quit commenting on this post because you’re exposing just how stupid black women truly are. I’m surprised you’re not here in north Carolina (like JUDAH would say) making “slave faces” with all the other bugged out black women
@INDIGO
LOLL I hope not. I planned on making him a steak dinner after the concert. Wouldn’t want my hard work to be in vain.
I’m over all these black women chopping their hair off! Stop! It’s not attractive on MOST! This is the PLAN to keep black women single and non productive…you see black men…men period love a woman with hair, so grow it, and stop cutting it off!!! DAMN!
@ WONDERMENT
Thank you. Excellent comment, but that won’t happen. The black female has been trained to say things like “I do this for ME.”, “I am not my hair.”, etc. as if anyone concerns themselves with their outward appearance for any reason other than the conventions of the society that they live in. The black woman has been trained to believe that to do something for a black male is demeaning. Then after they emit all that counter-productive energy, they buy magazines like this one that promote how many of them are single as if people do not know why lol.
I agree. I can’t stand this trend. It looks ugly on most women I’ve seen it on..
People can say what they want…Short nappy hair isn’t for everyone. I’m seeing sisters with tiny,nappy afros,bad skin and bad attitudes. Nothing feminine. I wish this trend would go away too.. If you’re gonna do the big chop,at least make sure your body is right…and take some time to make sure your eyes and skin are on point. Going natural does not automatically mean you love yourself..but taking care of yourself does.
Jill looked great last year when she lost that 60 pounds… I bet she even hates her hair now.. But someone is telling her it’s the thing to do and SHE of all ppl should have a natural. Smh
@INDIGO
Some women are better off wearing weaves and wigs. Not to mention it makes many look too masculine. The low-cut looks better on old(er) women.
So I guess burning your scalp with chemical relaxers that could lead to other health problems, pulling out your hair with imported weaves and extensions with results like Naomi Campbell is what black women should aspire to. It’s people like you who bring shame to black people’s natural hair. Why should the standard of being feminine and beauty have to be what the white world say or complimentary to what they look like. That is some self hating garbage you are talking about. The chop is a start to growing it natural, not to keep it short. Most people don’t want their hair short, but for a start to what to be their God given authentic self. Big ups to them for being brave enough to do so and at the same time deal with self hating people like you.
@IZZIB
It’s a different story when you chop your hair off to go natural or to have a clean start. The thing is that most women are chopping off their hair and getting shape-ups because they think it’s a “bad” hairstyle and that they look good in it (which “some” do). It’s just a hair trend for many and a bad one at that.
Some people wear extentions, front lace and other hairstyles and look horrible too. It’s all subjective. Why should black women take another race’s hair to make it theirs. It doesn’t match. Beauty styles constantly change to what society thinks is cool. If black women look masculine to others, so be it. It’s their natural look. Let those who love them for who they are naturally choose them.
Just because someone doesn’t like ceasars on female,why assume they are relaxing,weaving or wiggin their hair? I didn’t say anything about disliking natural hair..I don’t like low ceasars,fades and tiny fros.. Like I stated,it’s not for everyone… Just like some weave and wigs are not for everyone…
There is nothing wrong with women wearing their own hair but like everyone said it doesn’t look good on everyone to have a low hair cut. On some women it does look very masculine. I’m not a fan of it. I do agree that the perms and weaves should stop but the low hair cuts I just can’t get with. Why would you want to walk around looking like twins with your man. Negative!
How is what grows out your scalp (i.e. “naps”) not for you??? If I straighten my hair it’s down my back however I’m currently wearing it in it’s natural state…and because people of African descent can experience up to 50%-80% of shrinkage when their hair is natural, my hair looks to be about 3 inches off my scalp. I understand not liking a manly bald fade or ceasar but everybody’s hair doesn’t grow long so what wrong with a short nappy fro? Some of yall sound real foolish on here.
“so what wrong with a short nappy fro?”
They look like used Q-tips!LOL
I also find it funny you had to add the typical black female disclaimer:”If I straighten my hair it’s down my back” Making sure no one thinks you are a used Q-tip..LOL!!! Go on girl! smh
Thank you Indigo. The hair style is not for me that’s what I was talking about. Look I’m not on that holier than thou shit nor am I on a natural journey trying to prove how black I am. This is getting out of hand now. Not everybody wants their hair all over their damn head. Not every one likes the nappy look and not eveyone wants to look like a dude. Period. I have a right to my opinion so how are people foolish? Because they don’t agree with you or the other black women who obviously had issues when growing up and now have to prove something to the world. I don’t wear weaves or perm my hair either. My hair is naturally curly and I still straighten it whenever I feel like it and if that makes me out to want to be something that I’m not then whatever. I don’t have to prove my blackness. This shit is pathetic.
@Michelle My comment must have hurt your feelings. Ironically I wasn’t even addressing you as I pretty much agreed with your post. AGAIN my point: It’s one thing to have a PREFERENCE but it’s sad (and foolish) that “black” people consider “black” women to be ugly/manly in their NATURAL state – which for some might be a short fro if their hair doesn’t grow. How does this not make sense?
@CMEEZ
You’re making it seem like all naturals have short hair. If you’re cutting your hair off to go natural than that’s understandable. But if you deliberately cut your hair (and keep it cut) because you think it’s “bad” then that’s a problem. If a man walks around rocking flexi curls in his hair, people would call him gay. Shouldn’t it be the same thing for a woman who wears a close, shaven cut with fades? The standard should be the same. Low cuts have a way of making women look masculine, just like roller set curls would make a man look feminine.
Black women are beautiful with short hair, black men are brainwashed to believe otherwise and associate it masculinity. If you can look at this woman’s face and not see she’s beautiful, there is something seriously wrong with you and her hair is only an accent to that fact.
Oh forgot to include the women that have this mentality in there too. @ Michelle if you can’t look at what naturally grows out of your head and like it’s evident to the fact that you are trained by this culture to believe it’s a problem. If all black people were still in Africa left alone, you wouldn’t take issue with your hair you may like someone elses based on various reasons as we all do, but nobody to tell you your hair is a problem, you wouldn’t see it as a problem point blank period.
@Cheers Please read my original comment.
@TC Exactly. “Femininity” has less to do with hair and more to do with the nature and behavior of a woman.
Another trend I don’t like is shaving the sides of your hair and perming the middle-like Woody Woodpecker. That stuff IS NOT CUTE!
And I don’t like when black guys get the little nappy mohawk going. That was NEVER cute, even when Mr. T did it. Also, when men bleach their hair ( a la Chris Brown & Wiz Khalifa) and make themselves look zesty as hell.
Jill hates men that date outside their race. She was talking about how it pains her to see black men with white women.
#teamjill
What is wrong with that? She is entitled to her own opinion and there are plenty of women that agree with her.
Im sure it wouldnt pain her as much if she had a black man of her own lol poor thing
Jill isn’t a fan of the black man abandon their own syndrome. A vid I watched the other day where the guy said all black females are out for money what about all of the women that are not, and the black women you’ve never met or experienced? She talks about it in her song do you remember me, it’s not about hate for interracial dating it’s really dealing with those that hate themselves and then want to say we are the problem vs getting with a black person that doesn’t fit the stereotype and recognizing if they don’t fit it and their black, can’t generalize an entire race of people.
I am a Black man, and it bothers me when I see other Black men date outside their own race… #truth I mean I’ll sleep with anybody but when it comes to settling down…I gotta get me some chocolate yo! lol
DOWN WITH THE BLACK WOMEN AND HER EVIL WAYS!!! NOTHING BUT A BUNCH OF JEZEBELS AND SAPPHIRES!!! BUG-EYED MISSY ELLIOT LOOKING BIATCHES!!
STFU!
Go up to one and say that to their face…..yeah not going to happen RIGHT!
Why don’t you put a pic up…effing coward!!
I’ll take natural hair, long or short, ANY DAY over pounds of weave and fake hair.
There are too many crabs in a bucket on this thread. Some of you all need to find something else to do other than criticize other people. I’m sure MAJORITY of you all are very ugly both inward and outward and couldn’t help anyone even if you tried.
PREACH!!!
the big chop phenomenon has been disguised and some sort of liberation for black women from weave, chemicals, and “I am not my hair”, but what it really boils down to is the promotion of the disgusting le$bian epidemic taking place in the black community.
as*
You seem to have caught the epidemic of stupidity. Short hair looks masculine, so that mean a woman is gay? Are you in elementary school?
she’s always been sexy and always will be. go jill!
When this become a commentary on black women and their hair? Weren’t we just looking at a cover of Jill? Goodness..
For the record Jill Scott has long Natural hair for a long time, then permed it in a bob style. She looks as though she cut off the perm and has started natural again.
For a long time in history men with long hair was commonplace. I don’t understand why short hair is by definition “masculine”? Once your hairstyle is FLATTERING can someone explain to me why it matters if it’s long or short. Short hair can be very flattering, feminine and sexy.
And the way people talk on here it shows they know very little about the structure of black hair and WHY it doesn’t “grow” (it does actually, but doesn’t retain length and has unique issues that inhibits length retention).
But whatever.
I liked Jill best with the afro. Not in love with the cover, needs some tweaking.
I also like Jill Scott’s hair, and am surprised to see that it inspired so many negative comments. I suspect that the issue isn’t as much about the length of her hair as it is about the texture. If she’d worn her hair straight or wavy, and the length was exactly the same, there probably would have been far less criticism. Pretty sad, really.
i might read it in the safeway line but i wont buy it.
susan taylor sold essence and it suuuuuucks now. essence.com is ooo bootleg they have been needing a revamp for a while.
as far as jilly from philly, she got big headed. she is talented yes but she thought she was the savior of women.
doing relationship seminars, but then when lyzel and her didnt work out what did she do? did she admit her faults? nope. she did what she told us to not do: she ran into a relationship and was stupid? Bc that is what she did when she got pregnant by Lil John Roberts after dating him 4 just 5 minutes, then was mad that they didnt have the same outlook on life. Perhaps if you had dated him you woulda known where he stood on things.
JILL NEEDS TO LOSE WEIGHT AND KEEP IT OFF
OTHERWISE KNEE AND BACK PROBLEMS ARE JUST AROUND THE CORNER….SHE MAKES TOO MUCH MONEY NOT TO GET A TRAINER AND HELP SO SHE CAN BE HERE FOR HER FAMILY
Perms, weaves, wigs, fros, whatever blk women like to do to enhance their beauty. I’m just sick and tired of blk beauticians screaming about a client’s hair being too thick or too long.
Very pretty and I love how she embraces being large.
She looks beautiful as usual.
To whom it may concern,
I tuned into 106& Park for the first time in a long time on September 11, 2012 due to my hectic workload in the MA program that I am currently enrolled. To say the least, I was highly disappointed in the presentation of the show, as well as the diction/ readability/ and intelligence of the hosts. The premise of the show is geared towards the upliftment and support of young people of color–featuring hosts that can barely pronounce and enunciate words, lack in presentation skills, and are unprofessional does not correlate with the image the show was built on.
Unfortunately, over the years (I am currently 24 years old) I have seen a shift in the portrayal, images, and messages being conveyed to the young audience that tunes in to view the program. I truly believe that 106 & Park needs to be revamped in its entirety. I am saddened at the departure of Raquel Roxanne Diaz and Terrence Jenkins. However, if the show should continue into its 13th year, it needs a clear vision and new approach to win that once dedicated and attuned audience that it once captivated during the era when Shad Gregory Moss and Destiny’s Child reigned.
To put it quite simply, BET should select more constructive hosts and create a story line that correlates with the issues of today’s colored youth (i.e., job issues, healthy relationships, family struggles, education, etc.). More than just music, young people need to be delivered messages that are applicable to their livelihood–these messages should not be beaten to death, but they should not be summed up in a mere 30 seconds either. Furthermore, although some of the celebrities that stop by the show for guest appearances are relatable, they do not represent the majority of young colored youth–therefore, the emphasis on celebrities/ actual issues of today’s youth should be balanced. I highly suggest that BET begin this change by taking a poll of the interest of young people (one that is geared towards social issues a part from aesthetics/
Snapbacks/louboutins). I yearn for the days of Teen Summit, and even the Basement with Tyga (these shows were informative and thorough). The aforementioned shows actually provided young audience members with depth instead of breath. Lastly, with elections around the corner it is vital that the messages that are conveyed to the young audience that tune into 106 & Park is clear, concise, and accurate. Our livelihoods are at stake; since BET caters to a large young Black audience it is important that elections/voting messages are constantly and properly reiterated throughout the show.
In closing, I hope that this letter is read by someone that actually cares about the colored youth of today. I understand that I am just one person, but like Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, like Sojourner Truth , like Malcolm X, like Rosa Parks, and like Martin Luther King, Jr., change begins with the pursuant and advocacy of an individual voice.
I hope to see more representation of individuals like myself on my favorite network in the near future.
Respectfully,
A young black female acquiring a MA in Organizational Communication at California State University, Fresno
@ Lovely it is spelled correctly (see, oxford dictionary). Premise (i.e., ground, basis). And out of all that I shared as great concern for a program that I grew up on and value–all you had to attribute was stating that I incorrectly spelled a word that I actually spelled correctly. Seriously…
P.S
Be sure to put the period inside of the quotation mark, not out outside.
My bad. It didn’t make sense how you used the word “premise” in the sentence. Oh and thanks for the tip…..ok…bye bye.
I’ve said that least 7299688 times. SKC was here…
