‘Save My Son’ is a one-hour series from TV ONE hosted by renowned Educator, Principal, Author, CNN Contributor Dr. Steve Perry. The eight-episode series will feature several young men and their families dealing with gangs, drugs, truancy and other crimes. The series premieres Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at 9 EST.
If you’ve been reading CL for a while you may remember our exclusive interviews with Dr. Steve Perry over the past couple of years. He is a noted educator and real talk enthusiast, so I know this show is going to be a great watch. Check out a couple of the promo videos below…

Glad to a show a positive show about black people trying to make a difference for the youth, instead of the all the fighting/cheating etc on with some reality shows
this is a necessary show and i am glad he is doing this…because a ton of shows and networks that cater to women and the violence, hardships and struggles they endure. they have nothing on any of these networks showcasing the struggle of men anywhere and everywhere. the fact this caters to our community makes me excited and i cannot wait to watch it!
But the root of all those problems,more than the majority of the time,stem from a female…”MOTHER” The media execute it the wrong way instead of pointing out the connection(s) These types of series have been done many of times,but until they really want to get to the bottom of the problems,this is just entertainment for church folks… And they would have Dr.Steve Perry assasinated before they allow him to show any real solution on prime time. The government got rid of the Black Panthers,but can’t get rid of the bloods and crips?
Indigo, it’s not hard to make your point without referring to someone being assassinated.
@GBW… Did I say I was going to assassinate him? Or hope that he is assassinated? It’s a discussion. Have people been assassinated for standing for a cause? The answer is yes, right? That’s just why these problem will not go away,people want to be handled with baby gloves and have everything sugar coated. And they need series like this to keep them pacified.
@rehabkid
Me too. I’m a woman and I agree with there finally being something on networks to inspire men to be better. Males were created first because they are the foundation and they have the most responsibility, as they are suppose to be covering for the rest…so if men aren’t there or are some how incapacitated then the rest(women, children, family, the community, the city, the state, the country, the continent, and the world.) can fall apart, as the foundation is where it all begins, and a house without a sturdy foundation will fall. So it’s easy to find out where the issue is.
‘dealing with gangs, drugs, truancy and other crimes.’
Dealing. It doesn’t sound like a show aimed at helping solve the above.
They are not looking to solve those problems listed… They are looking to spin themselves into butter… This will be on TV One and on the A&E channel,American Gangster will be playing…
Seems like a great show
I’ve been saying SOS for years… Save Our Sons.
Was he a host on Black Mean Revealed?
Sorry but this has been done many times before, I hope they discuss solutions and give ideas on referral resources to help in peoples communities otherwise its nothing but another trojan horse of a show..
This is great! Tune in People!
i could be wrong, but a lot of the young black guys just seem to absorb and glamorized anything gangster, criminal, hoodlum. if only they would take all that energy and determination and put it into education or doing positive things, they would truly realize just how bad they could really be. i feel like a lot of these rappers are selling these negative images to young black boys. that’s right boys because real responsible men would’nt be doing this stupid shyt. when the fact is these very same rappers are not living the life they rap about, they’re living the good life. they’re living in mansions, nice neigborhoods ( not with litter all over the place), attending the fashion shows in paris, being chauffered around and have bodygaurds. it’s like an epidemic, with these sagging pants, uneducated, baby making (can’t take care of them), disrespectful to wommen, drug abusing, drug dealing, want to be tough guys with no regard for life, killing people to prove that they are hard, over some stupid shyt, when in fact all they’re doing is reeking havoc on their own community and people, which is what THEY want you to do. you are doing THEIR work and objectives for them. which is to put you in the grave or jail. black people wake the fuc up!!!!!!
*glamorize
*women
I hope these boys will not grow to be absent fathers. Fathers are so vital in the family and I wonder do they really know that.
“Good” fathers are so vital in the family. And good mothers even more so…
@ INDIGO
Here we go with the female worship smdh…..no party is more “vital” than the other. The belief that the mother is more “vital” than the father is the reason why there are so many single parent homes now. The females in this society are so high off of their own fumes that they consider the male irrelevant, and then want to blame the male when their “plan” (or lack thereof) fails. I’m not stating that you’re necessarily stating that the male is not essential, but the premise that you stated about the mother being more “vital” is the root of many problems.
@Judah. I agree with what everything you’re saying. What I posted,was far from me worshiping females.lol I just want females to realize how vital their role is in raising a male and to stop blaming males for all that goes wrong. I stress the word good because people seem to forget that it’s “good” parenting that’s the key..And just because this man is the father,doesn’t mean it’s good for him to be in the child’s life. Hurt males are usually hurt by their mother or hurt their mother let them be hurt.. Hurt people do hurtful things.
I know one of the main problems… People forget it takes a village to raise a child. But are quick to throw the word community around.
@INDIGO
Another thing that will help is if children were born to parents who are married and lived together (and stayed married for the most part). Nobody wants to remember this for whatever reason.
I know a few people that are drug addicts,felons and gang members that had both parents in the household. But like I say “good” parents are needed. If the children see daddy punching mommy in the face on a regular basis,or mommy drunk out of her mind on a regular bases,what do you think might become of these children? But their parents are married. I’m just using a loose example. I see no good parents married too.
@ INDIGO
That’s true, a man must be a “good” parent, but who defines what “good” is? The mother? Society at large? Who or what is establishing standards of manhood and parenting? I don’t necessarily subscribe to the “mother theory”, because that again over-exaggerates the influence of the female principle. There’s obviously an influence there, as there is from the father, but the environment plays a heavy role and the spirit the child was born with. I believe that Freudian psychology and movies like “Psycho” have trained people to use the mother as a root force for all conduct good and bad, when that is not always the case. More than being hurt by their mothers, black males in this society have been hurt by the massive disorder in this society, which to their enemies is order. You must know what time you’re in, in order to understand the condition of the battle. The propaganda machine fabricates a false scenario of problems so that people in turn concoct false solutions which leave them in the same predicament. Everything is spiritual, and the reason why people end up (like you say) “spinning themselves into butter” is because they don’t really want the answers to the issues that they’re bringing up, because it demands sacrifice. Women have been glamorized so much in this society that they view the condition that would restore order i.e. the dominance of the male, as being demeaning and subservient. Conversely, (and hypocritically) they rant and rave about the lack of “real men”. Energy is never lost, it is transferred, so if the men are powerless, the power must have gone to the women. If the women sincerely want (or claim to want) “powerful men”, the inordinate power that females have must be transferred back to it’s proper place.
@Judah they won’t… who in the hell wants to lose power? I was sitting at a table with some single ladies. My home boy mentioned that this arabic young lady he’s seeing cooks, cleans, and attends to all of his needs and they are only dating. Both of the girls sneered at the thought of him “dating,” out of his race and more importantly her submitting in that regard to him. And told them how my mother “knew her place,” in regards to my parents marriage and courting process and she isn’t a “black,” woman persay. They took so much offense the moment that came out of my mouth. But, it was true. She never had to work and that was a privilege provided by my father to her. In return, she kept an orderly home – clean home, ironed clothes, cooked meals, PTA/Soccer Mom, assisted with home work and even took us to tutors and she even had some other activities for own sanity. I don’t believe its sexist or even malicious when I say this because I had a upbringing almost none of my friends had. They almost all grew up in divorced or single parent homes.
@ REHABKID
Exactly….brotha it’s very simple. It’s all about power. Power is taken, it’s not given, and no matter how much fluff the black female talks, the power will have to be taken from them. The will not give it, particularly the black woman. That transition of power will occur when this society falls. In the meantime, the black man needs to come out of the worship of the female and other false idols and spend their time investing in their development mentally and spiritually. Most of the false platforms that have been created are societal, and will collapse when this society collapses. I guarantee that there were no “strong (rebellious and bitter) black women” in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina or in Haiti during the earthquake. If you ever watch any “apocalyptic” films like “The Book of Eli” (which is an excellent film), Hollywood shows you what the female is reduced to when there is anarchy, and that is a bedwench. Every female in the film had to sell her body in order to stay alive. In a real society, there is ownership of LAND, which promotes order because you must sustain the land by producing children to work it, and pass it on to when you are deceased. The man loves and protects his woman because she is his prize possession and brings forth his children. In a society like this, where nothing is owned, everything is a facade and based in artificiality, so the man and his image is denigrated.
@REHABKID
How many black men nowadays agree with their women staying at home though? Many want their spouse to get out and work just like he is. And I also noticed that Black Men only allow their wives to stay at home if she’s not black. If she was Black, she better work! LOL Hypocrites
@INDIGO
Of course. But the child is more likely to become a felon and all those other things if he grew up with a single mom.
Better female worship, how many more children would be in the foster care system if it weren’t at least for their mothers willing to raise them
Dr. Perry is the REAL DEAL!
Indigo – From all of your posts, I think I see where you’re coming from. You have interesting, strong, passionate opinion about the black family. I can really appreciate your concern. I don’t have kids – I never wanted to have child without being married – all my friends did – and I could just see the mess that it created for my friends, their boyfriends and the children that were born. I think one thing that we as black women do that drives me crazy (and I preach this to my friends) is that we raise our daughters and love our sons. Meaning, we instill the values of hard work, education, and a do-for-yourself attitude in our girls but allow our sons to be lazy, not get educated, be dependent, etc. I think a lot of black women are so afraid of their sons failing or being disappointed in any way that we pamper them and baby them until they are of no use to anyone, especially themselves. Or they seem to feel that their sons responsibility is to be there for them, not to grow up and become a resonsible husband and father. Like Steve Perry said, they want their sons to be their boyfriends. I think one of the ways to counteract this is that, if possible, boys should be raised by their fathers. If they are good and reasonable men otherwise, then I think boys should be raised by men because a man is not going to pamper his son. He’s going to push him to get up, go to school, get a job, get out there and work for his pay. His mother just wants to protect him and keep him near her so that nothing bad can ever happen to him.
“Meaning, we instill the values of hard work, education, and a do-for-yourself attitude in our girls but allow our sons to be lazy, not get educated, be dependent, etc.”
Jeez, maybe we actally needed the massa and overseer to make them work…or maybe they had them for so long, they don’t know how to motivate themselves without.Hmmmm….
Helpful information. Lucky me I discovered your website accidentally, and I am surprised why this accident didn’t took place earlier! I bookmarked it.
I have wow cable and I do not have tv1 maybe you can inform me if this program may be on wow cable an if so what channel. I was looking so forward to seeing Save my son and it’s was not on my cable. Can anyone help me. Thank you
So i watched the episode of Save My Son. I have to tell you all. I know Steve and his family .What he does is great!! however he has lied to everyone. he did not come from an abusive house . And although he slept in low income housing he was brought up in a very loving upper middle class family. Now don’t get me wrong did he see these things? Yes but not in his home life. He’s a fraud in that respect.
saw some of this show, seems like they’re trying to direct young black men in the right direction. how successful it will be, only time will tell.
I’d love for these documentaries to actually get legs in the black community and actually affect change. It seems like most people these days are content to sit idly by and watch these things happen and not do anything about it.
I hate to have the one ignorant comment, but god damn this man is fine as shit. Marry me, Dr. Perry.
Part of the problem…
HELP MY SON PLEASE, he’s 19 yrs old and he’s out of control .he didn’t finish school he’s drinking/smoking keep getting locked up I can’t take it as a single parent ;(

May God forever bless you and your family Dr. Perry. Your work is not going unrecognized. As a single african american mom who raised two girls and whose daughter is now raising a son without his father, it gives me hope to know that if one man can step up and mentor our young men in this generation, there will be many to follow in your footsteps. Again, God Bless You. May you live a life full of purpose and abundance!
I have been trying to get help for my Son since he was 14 years old due to me being a single mother and not financially able to do things that I want to do, i couldn’t afford to get him help, Its been a long road with my son he is now 23 years old he has been in and out of juvenile and onto jail in and out and still Im asking you to please SAVE MY SON. But he still on the road to destruction please help me help my son before its to late, Before he end up dead are in prison for the rest of his life..He makes bad choices.smh pls help me..In the name of JESUS. HELLO I’M A SINGLE PARENT OF A 17 YEAR OLD TEENAGER FROM NEWARK,N.J. MY SON IS INTO THE STREETS AND I NEED HELP SAVING HIM. HE BEEN KICKED OUT OF 2 HIGH SCHOOLS, SMOKE WEED, INTERACT WITH GANG MEMBERS AND I’M TIRED THIS IS MY LAST STRAW I’M READY TO GIVE UP ON HIM,BUT EVERYONE IS TELLING ME NOT TOO. PLEASE HELP
Call Jay-Z, hes just across the bridge, and he’s all about love now. Maybe he has some words for the young man. That don’t work, try Snoop.
pls don’t give up he needs a male mentor of some kind, i know because i used to be your son i was out of control, getting arrested for theft mutiple times all kinda ingnorant shit. But i read this book call HOW JAIL SAVED ME, i read it while in jail got out went to church with my mom found a great mentor in the church and he helped me turn my life around. Now i have love for god, my family and most important myself. Young men have a major weakness if they grow up without a father, its like going hiking without a map so you get lost. Im praying for you and your son only he can save himself but puttin tools to help him shouldnt be off the table.
Girls, stop gettin with these HIV infected jailbirds – try “something new” because the black “community” is dead!! Don’t love him, support him, vote for him because he’s black, and you think he got your back like you got his – cause that’s a fantasy – let it go!
In every case on this show, the man willingly leaves his children. Black men are about the ony race of men that abandon their children, try to justify their bad behavior by outvictiming black women. Almost all of these kids are raised with everything, a mom who struggles successfully to give them everything but they choose to do wrong – pitiful.Glad its not my problem.
u sound sick in the head.
Black men need to save their own sons and stopping asking women, the government, and everyone else to do it for them. Probably one of the most damaged group of people on the planet – sadly. My grandad, older father great, but since that generation – rubbish. Just being real…
SOS without spendin a bunch of money taking these kids to fulfill some fantasy. SOS with the resources available in the household and community. Otherwise this isn’t a viable solution – just entertainment…hmmm, oh wait,this TV1 – okay, now I got it.
I really need your help, my nefphew needs hes a good boy smart has a father but he’s with a aother family,,his uncles care very much ,but know don,t know how to reach out and they love him so much and is scared of loosing to the streets,,mom needs help too, how can he get on the show Im writing I,m his auntie and i k now this boy can get some help ,,, please steve help my baby,,, saveon roystet …

My question to you Sir, do you have plans to come to San Diego, Ca, and if so I would to meet with you regarding start a program here.
A former employee of Juvenile Hall, and a Youth Drug Counselor, I’m interested in starting a program as such, with you help and guidance I feel we can make a difference between our young men and women.
I look forward hearing from you, I pray God will continue to bless you in a might way, the world needs more men of your status to help get our young people back to where they began. Hopeful with their parents, family members, school, and the Church.
