POLITICS/VIDEO: ROUND 1 OF THE PRESIDENTIAL DEBATES – WHAT’S YOUR TAKE?

October 4th, 2012

Republican presidential candidate, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Democratic presidential candidate, President Barack Obama during the Presidential Debate at the University of Denver on Wednesday (October 3) in Denver, Colorado. This is the first of four debates for the 2012 Election and was moderated by PBS’s Jim Lehrer.

The debate was supposed to focus on domestic issues: the economy, health care, and the role of government but focused more of the economy and health care. Watch full video of the debate below and let us know what you thought in the comment area.

Romney came out swinging and Obama looked like he wasn’t ready for it. Mitt “won’ the debate but he won by going back on almost every position he held prior to entering the building. Obama had so many opportunities to capitalize on Mitt’s flip-flopping but never went in for the takedown. I swear Ed Schulz was going to cry last night on MSNBC because Mitt bested Obama.
President Obama held the lead running up to the debates and if this debate changed anyone’s mind then they should have their registration revoked because they must have started following this thing 15 minutes before the debate began.

Firstly the moderator was horrible. They should have just had Obama and Romney on stage talking among themselves, because he was ineffective.

This is debate #1. Now Obama didn’t come out the gates like a rotwiller which many were probably hoping for, but he was calm and collect and held his ground. After this debate he and his team will look over the tape and see where he can advance.

To me there was no clear winner. From an objective point of view all Romney showed me was that he was a liar, a fat out liar in fact in regards to his tax plan (which would cost billions) and medicare. That is what Obama needed to address but he was a bit passive on a lot. And if someone who is aggressive, talks over you and the moderator, and cannot get his point across accurately and successfully in his allotted time rocks your socks off, then there you go. Romney needed to shoot this out the park, but he was not like-able whatsoever.

I cannot wait for the vp debate.

Nicki I agree with you all the way. The moderator was terrible and I think we were all hoping that President Obama was going to address key issue that would’ve put Romney ins his place, especially the 47% he was talking about in his latest ad that has everyone in an uproar but that didn’t happen. Romney is a liar for sure but President Obama should have showed more involvement than he did.

I could not have said it better myself. Now I am betting that the vp debate will be totally different and Biden will be the agressor.

Obama was cool and I liked it! Sit back and let Romney lie and get all hot and bothered and then hit him in the head the next round with the facts!

Besides, the President’s anniversary was last night, no need to get all hostile, he wanted to chill with his wife!

Besides I don’t need to see a debate at this point I already know who I am voting for!

This isn’t a time for the President to sit around and just be cool, calm and collected–Election Day is almost a month away and there’s no time for that! Step up to the plate President Obama and bring your A game! This is not the time to be good, fair or mediocre. Do better!

    • THECONCRETELOOPIST

And one more thing while I’m at it–every picture I see of the President is one in which he’s standing around with that silly smirk on his face! There’s nothing funny here! Time to get this economy together. I just checked my bank account and it shows a whopping -$165!!! The damn landlords at my apartment complex must of started cashing rent checks on the day in which rent is submitted!!! The damn whores used to at least wait a few days until folk got paid!!! AAAAARRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!

      @ LOOPIST

The reason why Obama is always smirking is because it’s a big joke to him. The whole thing is a big joke. He has no answers. He isn’t paid to have answers. He’s paid to read from a script. Romney, Obama, and their wives probably had an 0rgy after the debate, and I’m not joking. You cannot pay back a 16 trillion dollar debt, and it’s ridiculous that anyone thinks that is a possibility, especially with paper fiat money.

I wonder if Obama secretly wants to lose…..he seems to lack the drive and enthusiasm that Mitt Romney has. I was disappointed. Hopefully he’ll come reinvigorated on Thursday. I’m not buying what Romney is selling.

Because you’re not open to buy it. It’s that simple. I keep hearing “Romney’s a liar, Romney doesn’t have a plan, Romney doesn’t make sense” does Romney not make sense or are you just unable to understand? Does he not make sense or do you just not want him to make sense? Please level with yourself. Are we better off than we were four years ago? Nope. Is anything going to change in his policies? Nope. I’ll let you do the math.

Instead of asking if you are better off these last 4 yrs; why don’t you ask yourself if you are better off since 12 yrs ago…8 yrs ago….cuz um yep i am. My 401k is finally making money again, my healthcare is cheaper than it was last year, my mother just got healthcare after being kicked off her insurance due to the need for 2 brain surgeries and a pace maker, my sister was able to save her house that was in foreclosure and my son is in college thanx to the Pell Grant. Vote for who you want; but I need my Planned Parenthood, my child tax credit and my son has 3 more years in college (mechanical engineer) oh and let’s not forget that fema gave me money when my basement flooded. If you’re not doing any better since Obama; you can’t be doing any worse. Everyone has their opinion, but I grew up on PBS and even though i’m not on welfare or section 8 now…i was at one point…i can’t be for somebody that wants to abolish unemployment compensation, streamline SSI, take away my children’s ability to afford school and have me in a dang emergency room receiving medical attention because I cannot afford health care

@nicki, you said it just right! Romney repeatedly talked over the moderator and gave little respect to the guidelines of this debate. Obama on the other hand respected the moderator and did his best to speak in his alloted time. I also think it’s funny when people actually state that Romney talked about specifics etc. when all he did was contradict himself throughout the whole debate. I don’t buy this theatrical performance one bit! I believe Obama definitely could have been more assertive at making Romney accountable for what he has supported and proposed, BUT this is just debate # 1. As another fellow Leo , I know that we like to assess our opponent and THEN make the attack just like a Lion would attack prey lol. Obama is so smart and if you think his team isn’t giving him the best possible strategies and topic points to discuss further down the line then you’re sadly mistaken! Obama ’12.. LETS GO!

Lol. Obama is not the man the country needs at this point in time. I don’t understand why you African Americans are so adamant about supporting him. He’s proved himself incompetent time and time again. He’s done absolutely nothing to support and/or help “blacks” or any minority but you think Romney hates blacks? Says who? Since when? The media has conditioned YOU to believe that Republicans hate blacks, they hate women, and are racist bigots — and you believe it! Think about, this is exactly what the white man has done to our people for centuries — instilling fear to gain control. You all hate Romney and don’t even know why. Smh. Obama is not qualified for this job and I think last night made that clear. Stop being biased and open your eyes. Clinging onto this idea hope and change that is simply not there. Stop it.

Bravo, Pink. I completely agree. I think many need to look at the history of Repubs and Dems (although they both have their “issues”), and find out who supported black rights and liberties more often than not especially during the critical civil rights period. Still, many blacks, including my fam but excluding me, have an allegiance to Dems. Why? Don’t have enough time to give my thoughts…lol! People need to just THINK past party lines and make an informed decision.

Obama is an entertainer. The Presidency for him has been one big social event. We don’t need that for four more years. As with any new President, we may not know exactly how Romney’s plans will play out but he definitely has experience under his belt. Maybe Romney WILL go to ALL of his security briefings, make time to speak with world leaders (and not say he can talk to them over the phone), not think he can smile and negotiate with terrorists who have made it clear they don’t want to negotiate, etc. We do, however, know what we have had and will have if Obama is re-elected. Maybe he will blame the past President for all of his problems…oh wait, my bad! Anyway, I don’t even want to think about how much the National Debt has increased at such an alarming rate over the past 4 years ($5 Trillion in O’s first term alone!).

Anyway, I think at the debates Obama thought he was on The View, MSNBC, Letterman or at a Jay Z concert. Maybe he needed his teleprompter. I dunno but I do know Romney is not playing around. Obama hasn’t really been challenged in 4 years but now its time for the public to see what I saw from day one….an inexperienced, smooth talker who thinks he can charm away our problems. BTW, he wasn’t being “cool” at the debates but he was p*ssed that someone was hitting him with hard facts and questions. Who debates and doesn’t look at their opponent? Debate 101.

I didn’t even watch the “debate” i.e. the PERFORMANCE, between these two puppets last night, but I knew Romney took Obama’s lunch when I read the title of this post……”What’s your take?”, lmaooooo. Had Obama “won” this debate, the title would have been, “Obama destroys Romney in presidential debate” lol.

I knew that your tail wouldn’t be tucked between your legs for very long lol. All it takes is a couple of rocks to make the ogre come out the cave. So you didn’t have “political” posts called “Michelle Obama’s HEARTFELT speech”, or “President Obama EXUDES CONFIDENCE in Essence Magazine”, or “Clint Eastwood makes FOOL of himself at RNC”, or “Bill Clinton BREAKS DOWN FACTS” lmao??? You didn’t have any of those thread titles? I found those within the first 5 or 6 pages of a search on YOUR website. I’ll give you a pass and chalk up your amnesia to the multiple personality disorder you black females are usually plagued with. Don’t worry about when I’ve allegedly been “right” or “wrong”. At the end of the day, you will bow down to the elect just like everyone else when you’re broken down and you have no more options lol.

An exaggerative lie will more times than not sound more appealing than the straight truth so wit that said I think Obama did exactly what he was supposed to do, tell the people what we need to hear and not what we want to hear… if ur argument is inaccurate and/or baseless, I could care less how aggressive u speak or how much conviction u may put behind it.. even the analysts during the post debate poked holes in just about every so called fact Romney claimed… #teamobama

@ Ru agreed! @Pink, just speaking on behalf of myself and probably a lot of other Obama supporters, I don’t hate Romney at all, and I don’t accuse him of being racist!.. I just support Obama. I believe with the cooperation of Congress and with Obama’s leadership we will start to see even more change that Obama can provide. Too many times people want to blame Obama for the state of this country, instead of looking at the reality of the situation. We had a HORRIBLE and uneffective president BEFORE Obama and there is plenty of facts, events, etc to support this. So assuming that someone is brainwashed or oblivious to how the system works just because we think Romney is full of lies is ridiculous! I support Obama because he makes his policies clear, isn’t afraid to admit when he’s wrong, reaches out to the other side for unity and advice. This shows true leadership! Romney hasn’t even been consistent on sticking with most of his main proposals that he has been so vocal about over the past yr. The decision is clear between these two candidates.

No one was expecting Romeny to do as well as he did, since he has been flip-flopping and gaffing for the last 4 months. Romeny has been doing his homework and coming out of the primaries he was much more polished than Obama. Some of his base had given up all hope on this guy. What Romeny did last night was remarkable cause no one was expecting him to do better. Obama performance was not bad it just lacked spirit. He is out of practice debating, he needs to review this debate and remember to look directly at his opponent or directly at the camera when addressing an issue, not doing so made him look disconnected and sheepish. Hopefully he will learn from this experience, get some fire in his belly and come out swing in the next debate. He CAN do this.

After watching the debate yesterday and viewing some of the other comments I can honestly say there wasn’t a clear winner of the debate. I do feel like Obama answered the questions more directly than Romney, especially about his plans with his budget cuts and Romney’s attacks. I feel like Romney danced around a lot of topics, and should have played it more cool like Obama, it made him look like he was starting to drown. I can’t wait to see the next debate now

Absolutely flabbergasted that polling shows that Romney won this debate. Was I watching the same thing as everyone else? Did Romney not answer one single question? The only thing I know about what he plans for his administration if he wins is to undo everything that Obama accomplished, to cut “frivolous” spending like PBS, and to try to push administration of programs like social to privitization and the states to manage. Oh, and that HE IS A BIG LIAR! Still confused how he won this debate – because he talked really, really loud? America never ceases to amaze me. EVER.

President Obama could have checked Mitt several times during the debate. Mitt contradicted various statements/policy objectives he had put out in the past. Obama will presumably bring out with the big guns with a more offensive strategy, as he’ll definitely bring up the 47% comment, as well as more “mitt shit” that needs to be addressed!! ie how the hell romney plans to reduce the deficit and also reduce income tax rates AND eliminate tax breaks (while also stating which tax breaks).
