Kevin Clash who has voiced popular Sesame Street character Elmo is currently in a nightmare of sorts. Earlier this week, the 58 year-old was accused of having a past sexual relationship with a minor and just yesterday (November 12) he released a statement denying the allegations.
“I am a gay man. I have never been ashamed of this or tried to hide it, but felt it was a personal and private matter. I had a relationship with the accuser. It was between two consenting adults and I am deeply saddened that he is trying to characterize it as something other than what it was. I am taking a break from Sesame Workshop to deal with this false and defamatory allegation.” [ SOURCE ]
His anonymous and alleged victim (who is now 23 years old) said he had a relationship with Mr. Clash since he was 16 but now if recanting those claims. The accuser’s lawyer just released a statement on Tuesday (November 13) saying,
“[The accuser] wants it to be known that his sexual relationship with Mr. Clash was an adult consensual relationship. [The accuser] will have no further comment.” [ SOURCE ]
Clash released a followup statement saying, “I am relieved that this painful allegation has been put to rest. I will not discuss it further.” The voice of Elmo is now on leave from Sesame Street, but who knows if he will ever return, even with the accuser recanting.
