Grammy award winning singer-songwriter Miguel premiered a new music video for his socially conscious song, “Candle in the Sun.” In the black & white video, the R&B crooner touches on topics like choice of religion, racism, peace, freedom, gun control and drug addiction:
Is there a God? Is he watching? Is she watching? Are they watching now? If not, what are we doing? Where are we going?

First Miguel was trying to be like Prince. Now he thinks he is Marvin Gaye? I just wish these artists would make a new way and try to be more original. I’m not impressed with this generic video and faux attention to “social issues.” This song lacks “authenticity.” Give someone a single Grammy and now all of a sudden they are “deep and meaningful”. The sad thing is that due to the level of modern music many will view this as interesting or refreshing. LOL
I’m trying to understand your reasoning behind him releasing this video. You are aware that he wrote this song right?!?! Which means he wrote this before there was even a video. As a matter of fact, the whole album was either written or co-writtern by Miguel, but this song in particular was written in it’s entirety by him (check the credits).
And whether you agree with me or not, there really is no such thing as originality. The only reason it’s such a big deal is because if you were to do your rendition of another artist’s song acapella and upload it to YouTube, then you’d be infringing. You name Prince and Marvin Gaye as sources for him switching up his style and not being original, which is rather interesting. Marvin Gaye cites (aside from his Father, a minister…..oddly) doo-wop groups such as The Moonglows and The Capris as the reason why he sings. Prince got his start playing in clubs and parties, the music they would play would be popular songs by Sly & the Family Stone, James Brown, Earth, Wind & Fire, Miles Davis, Carlos Santana, Jimi Hendrix. I’m sure you heard those influences in his music. Prince will probably tell you that Jimi and James are the reason he even does music.
You can miss me with the originality talk. It’s pointless.
Other than that, The video is DOPE, and this actually is one of my favorite songs on Miguel’s album.
Ok….why is he singing a “socially conscious” song, in that generic “sexy male r&b singer” tone? Learn how to emote something other than “sexy”. Also, the melody was all over the place.
I love this song from Miguel and the video is complementary. I love the original version more though.
Im still mystified by the big mass hysteria over this dude. He’s aight, but I guess he’s R&B’s savior by default since theres nothing better out.
try the NEW guy…Roman GianArthur

It’s a sad day when no one recognizes talent anymore. Why try to put this dude in a box? Appreciate the song for what it is…good and soulful.

I like the song. It’s nice to see someone touch on social issues.
This is so sad! Miguel give it up and resume your bible study ASAP. Before this system gets even worse.
