That was painful. Solange is “style” over substance. All she is just a vapid clothes hanger. This girl looks the part but has nothing to back it up and I do mean nothing.
She wants to be seen as some edgy independent artist when she is anything but. This is sheer nepotism. That audience did not know what to make of her.

I disagree a bit… I mean, in truth she does come off pretentious and she loses me with that… but her musicality is there for sure… I think she just has an “idea” of what she wants to be as an artist (earthy, neo soul-esque, NOT HER SISTER) instead of just being herself.

Not walking to the beat of her sister does not mean she is walking the beat of HER own drum. This image is 100% contrived. Lauryn Hill (Badu, Santigold, etc..) did this style already only difference is they she had actual talent and was not trying to distinguish herself from her far more famous sister. Everything about Solange is inorganic and calculated down to the last polka dot. She wants you to think she is being original and earthy.
Its obvious fashion or style isn’t quite your thing Mr. Overstreet. To call Solange’s image contrived is to call every other person with their own sense of style contrived. The people you named may dress similar to Solange to the layman, but to any self-proclaiming fashionista she has defined her own style. Her use of color, prints and textures are no where near what Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu and Santigold are doing. She definitely has her own perspective and point of view. That is exactly why the fashion industry has embraced her in such a way.
Calculated to the last polka dot? I guess there’s some special panel sitting around deciding how many polka dots to best present her in for live tv? Get a grip dude. Let’s focus on walking to the beat of YOUR OWN drum.
Ok, basically, what Richard is trying to say, is that Solange is dying to prove that she’s this eccentric/arsty/hipster/”weird”/free-spirited chick….to ensure that she wont be held to a high musical/vocal standard….So, when you want to ask “why the heck does she sound like that?”….you’ll quickly realize “oh, its cause she weird, experimental and quirky…not cause she lacks talent”…she’s been trying since 2008…and it’s not working. She’s contrived….not too different than Frank Ocean…except, he’s got more talent.

i agree with you to an extent. I feel that back in 2008 she used that facade of being the weird experimental eccentric artist as a way to, like you said “ensure that she won’t be held to a high musical/vocal standard” but i truly believe that now she has improved musically even in that field and from experimenting so much with her new style she became good at it and is now owning it. personally I definitely noticed an improved from her to the point where im starting to listen to her songs because im liking this new sound of hers. I think the timing of her new style is right. Its so clear that she has a lot of soul and the fact that she has been consistent with that same genre of music for years proves that she’s not a gimmick and that she is indeed serious about it and has been studying it for years.
what you fail to understand is that. solange is that type of girl. and for those of you who is saying she is dying to prove something, she isnt…. she is just a true down to earth chick… she is the odd ball of the familly. the awkard one, the artist, and i can totally relate to her.
I think it was a solid performance. You have to listen to the entire EP to get where she is going. She’s on her way to carving her on path in the music business. Keep striving girl!

Love this Solange! I feel like she’s definitely growing into an artist. Who says that you can’t ever change your style? Maybe this is the kind of path she’s always wanted to go in and if it wasn’t maybe something inspired her to do so.
OMG the people who are saying that Solange sucks, musically, are completely INSANE. This girl has depth. She is not trying to be edgy at all… i swear people use that word, edgy, on anybody who is different,,, i mean compare her to rihanna or cassie… they fall into the category of “edgy” but definitely not solange i mean she’s edgy in pursuing something that nobody else is doing these days so she’s edgy is that way . She has a lot of soul and is clearly influenced by music from the 60s. This performance is absolutely amazing, i would love to have been there because the setting and vibe was just beautiful! The instrumental was amazing! and on a side note, LOVE HER SHOES with them sexy legs! so hot!
She is her own artist, and she’s good at being her. Don’t judge her based on one mediocre performance. All artists have them, even Big Sissy Bey. Solo has killed in previous shows.
