Hey Damone! Thanks for taking the time to chat with us today, how are you?
DAMONE : Things are good! I can’t complain because I am highly blessed and favored as they say!
I wanted to ask you how the Look Bag came to be – was it a matter of clients always asking for specific tips or tools?
DAMONE : When I write for Oprah.com I get all these questions from readers from all different ethnicities asking very specific beauty questions and the truth of the matter is there is no rule when it comes to beauty but this way you can try new things. You will first hand get the best and coolest things on the market and there are stores where you purchase all these things and use them once and that’s it. This way you can try whats new and great on the market and try them out and order what you do like.
What is it like working with Oprah and the OWN team?
DAMONE : I have nothing but 100% love and respect for Oprah and her team they are all very professional. I have only meet her personally a few times where there is no one else in the room just her and I, and I can say truthfully that she is as sincere and kind as you imagine her to be. She expects the best from her team and that’s what they all achieve and expect is the best! Its been a great marriage of work.
How did you turn brows into a big business empire?
DAMONE : It naturally progressed to this because I initially started off doing make up and realized that the first thing to do is the eyebrows because even without a touch of make up the eyebrows can totally change a persons face. I started getting known for that, the press kind of jumped on board with it and it kind of evolved from there. I always wanted to work and be success but I had no idea it would happen. I just worked hard, perfected my craft and it all came into place.
To many you are also known as a beauty therapist. So when did you come to discover that your relationship with your clients was something special?
DAMONE : Immediately. Pretty much. Women are pretty particular about their appearance and what goes on so I think when you put your face in someone else’s hands there is a repertoire there you have to have with one another. Its very intimate you are so close and your energy is going onto another. I love seeing a woman come in and she’s a little down but when she leaves, she is happier. I think once you bring out the best they can be and look, it helps with happiness. You feel better and then they tell their friends and that’s how you really build clients.
Not to play the favorites game but you have quite the list of A List clientele – any faves out of the bunch?
DAMONE : Truthfully, you have clients you connect with more than others and some of them are girls down the street. Some are A-list celebrities but I really adore Kelly Rowland. She is just good people! All of those girls.. Kelly, Beyonce and Michelle. Entertainers go from one chair to the next but since day one they have been such amazing and loyal women. They are just really sweet girls!
Is there anyone you would love to have a few minutes to take them to that next level – brow speaking that is?
DAMONE : Wow! That’s a great question! I think that Julie Roberts is a beautiful woman but I could take her to the next level. Same with Meagan Good because she is a stunning woman. But the last woman would be Nicole Kidman. I’d really love to work with The First Lady, too! She is such a beautiful woman. I haven’t had the pleasure of working with her personally just yet but would love to.
I have to admit that before watching you on TLC’s Ten Years Younger, I was fighting my arch and went a little tweezer happy as an adolescent girl. What are the biggest brow blunders you have come across besides overdoing?
DAMONE : *Laughs* When people lighten their own brows and they turn orange it’s not attractive with anyone! The general rule is if you have dark hair go one to two shades lighter, vice versa when you have lighter hair and I think messing with your arch is pretty common of a mistake as well. Brows should be an inch and a half apart, too!
What are your thoughts on the high-end editorial trends of extreme bolded or colored brow? Should we leave it to the professionals and the runway or give it a try?
DAMONE : Leave it on the runway! Lightened brows are an example of it working in editorials but not so much in real life. I actually have a brow gel that comes in different shades that you brush the color of the gel onto the brow to get the shade right.
Has working so extensively on the brow region given you an added advantage into the world of make up when focusing on the other areas of the face?
DAMONE : For sure! A lot of brilliant make up artists don’t know how to do brows but I firmly believe that brows can take 10 years off your face, 10 pounds off your face and it balances out and structures your whole face. Brows often get neglected with a beautifully made up face and it shouldn’t be that way.
What is next for you?
DAMONE : I have my salons in NY and Beverly Hills that are quite busy. But I’m always pushing towards the next goal and next for me, I want to get back on television. I have been in a a lot of meetings with a bunch producers and I actually just pitched my first TV show last week. I have been in the lab working on new products and developing some great make up aside from brow care. It all comes out in the next year or so and I am really excited. I can’t wait!
Thank you for the chat and for changing the world one perfectly arched eyebrow at a time, Damone!
DAMONE : Thank you!
