NEW MUSIC: DAWN RICHARD – “BUM BUM”

March 13th, 2013

Dawn Richard has found much solo success with her studio album, GoldenHeart, which released earlier this year.

To show appreciation to her fans, she drops the unreleased track, “Bum Bum,” (produced and written by Druski) from the sessions of recording her last album, while she works on it’s follow up, BlackHeart.

This girl has so much drive…such drive….and is talented, which is commendable, but, she lacks the “it” factor, and a team as creative/driven as she is. Yes, there is a difference between talent and “it” factor. Example, Rihanna has more “it” factor, than talent…lady gaga has both….some have neither. Also, Dawn needs better material…her stuff always comes off as being “try-too-hard”.

I agree and disagree. Dawn doesn’t have the ‘it’ factor that Rih and GaGa have, which is true, but that has more to do with what mainstream society is willing to be down for. I mean, let’s call a thing a thing (Iyanla Vanzant): You have a chocolate girl who has her own style of doing uptempo Urban Alternative R&B/Dance. Given your opinion of her music it’s obviously an acquired taste. But that’s not saying that it isn’t working for her. Her debut album and prior works have garnered her critical acclaim and a growing large and loyal fan base (1 Mill Twitter followers, 3 Mill in Youtube view). It may not be Rihanna (who I wouldn’t pay to see perform life….jus sayin) or GaGa numbers, but it ain’t bad for a first time solo artist.

Oh and, this track has ‘club banger’ written allover it.

Now, if only 1million followers of hers would each follow her request, and purchase a copy of that album…..smh.

I know you can’t possibly be that ignorant. Nobody buys albums anymore, they bootleg the **** outta them.

Then why is it that Adele sold 25 million albums in this day and age?

Thank you! She also sold close to 10mil of her first album….If the music is good, the visuals are believable, the album will be bought. Ask Adele, Amy Winehouse, Usher (confessions), Norah Jones, Outkast, and a host of others who sold 10mil+ in this “downloading” age.

    • When is the last time you had the WAX taken from your ears? You might also want to try a lobotomy while you’re at it. Dawn Richards is a complete ZERO. Making great music is making great music. It’s not about being as you said a “chocolate girl” in a mainstream world. (Esperanza Spalding Dawn Richards is not) These are the typical excuses people fall to when they can’t sell a tune and they happen to be black. Dawn Richards is not even a real artist. This girl is the very definition of GENERIC. And FYI Twitter does not define greatness in terms of a MUSICIAN. Rihanna has hits that are confirmed in actual sales and sales chart accomplishments on Billboard (not that that defines musical greatness but it does define a particualr viability). Rihanna has done better on the charts than Beyonce because she has a more unique sound. You can’t even compare a nobody like Dawn Richards to Rihanna because Dawn will never have any type of commercial success. And Dawn does not have as you describe “critical” acclaim when all she produces is GENERIC R&B music.

But the thing is Richard, you don’t know what the heck youre talking about. Dawn doesn’t even have a record deal. Shes an independent artist. She fresh, innovating, talented and beautiful. She just need to right team behind her and she will definitely take over the music industry.

    • I know 100% what I’m talking about. Independent or not she is still GENERIC.
And one thing I can tell you with 100% certainty.

    • Dawn won’t be taking over the Music Industry. LOL

Still Richard that is YOUR opinion as far as Dawn Richard’s potential for more success and her sound (which, obviously you don’t like……….we get it already). If there is one thing I’ve learned about artists that take over the industry, let’s say Michael Jackson for instance, they don’t always come from the majors and they don’t always have a number one album prior to getting there (that’s where MJ fits in). You are aware that Thriller was MJ’s 6th studio album!??! Most of those works prior to hadn’t garnered the critical acclaim he’s so well known for now. Quick, name me at least 3 number one singles Michael has done as a SOLO ARTIST prior to Off The Wall/Thriller (don’t even think of mentioning anything by The Jacksons/Jackson 5)!!!. Rihanna has been making number ones (and has been taking over the game) since day one mainly because she’s had a well oiled machine behind her since day one. Given, she has a unique voice and can deliver on the next hot song like it’s nobody’s business. But Rihanna, for the most part, does other people’s music and she has less of a say in what she wants to put out.

(That’s exactly why you can name at least one number 1 hit from any album she’s ever made.)

Dawn Richard is an artist’s artist, she can sing, dance, write and produce and like MEHAN was saying, she’s independent, which means she has more control over what she wants to put out and what she believes in which again, is an acquired taste for those that ain’t feelin her sound. You don’t like it so that further proves that point.

But to say that she won’t takeover the game with the advent of independent and vanity labels now taking over the game with some of their most promising artists is like saying Republicans aren’t gerrymandering your district to steal the next election. Whatever you want to believe is up to you, but BEST believe it’s happening. If Dawn didn’t have that potential then you wouldn’t even be on this post making a comment about how much you can’t stand her music all-the-while big upping Rihanna in the SAME SENTENCE.

I am convinced that you work for Rihanna or are just so obsessed with her. You have a nerve talking about black women being ghetto and making fools out of themselves, but support, ghetto, trashy, “I like to get my a—whooped, pot head” Rihanna AKA Riwhorna! Riwhorna has only sold more than the talented Beyonce and has so many #1 hits because she makes BUBBLEGUM, TRENDY MUSIC and has Def Jam putting millions and millions of dollars into her marketing! She’s the Britney Spears of our generation and her voice is nasally and she never, ever hits all of the notes in the melody of her songs straight on. She’s a studio artist and a skank. Kesha was racking up #1s so quickly, but her label did what most labels do to their artists, make a mistake and didn’t promote her as much as they could have. Katy Perry stopped getting #1s because she finally took a break. This is why Def Jam forces Riwhorna to release albums a year apart! They know she will be forgotten once she takes a break.

No one has ever claimed Rihanna can sing. The issue at hand is that while Dawn IS more talented than rihanna, she lacks the charisma, likeability, and “it” factor that is needed for this “takeover” to happen. This is coming from someone who isnt even a fan of rihanna’s.

Dawn is right there with Cassie, Jojo, teyana taylor, Ashanti, Amerie, Rihanna, Teaira Marie, Blu Cantrell, Tiffany Evans, Tweet, and a host of others. I’m not saying that theres anything horrible about that….there are worse positions someone can be in, but lets be honest….none of them are “taking over” anytime soon.

And by the way both GoldenHeart and Armor On #1 on the itune charts which is where everyone buys their music now. oh and lets not forget White Out which charted as well. She has been in a platinum selling girl group twice over as well as a certified gold group with diddy… ghost writes for the same lame artist playing on the radio and does choreography as well… ok thats all!!!! #nowbacktothemusic lol

Rihanna has never wrote a record, so pipe down about this girl, if dawn decided to pay for hit records like rihannas, then she would properly be as big!!! People need to know the business, rihanna is not behind any of the creative on her project, she’s a puppet

A puppet with top designers, a lot of makeup and no talent
