Will and James chop it up!
Will Smith discusses contest and the ideal TV scriptwriter

In a seemingly clandestine initiative, Will Smith and his Overbrook Entertainment colleague James Lassiter collaborated with ANA Alliance for Family Entertainment, in search of stellar TV scriptwriters located in the USA.

The contest was apparently set in motion about a month ago, and calls for a 30-minute comedy or a one-hour drama script to be submitted by 1pm PST, on March 21, 2013.

But before you get all excited, be sure to read the fine print!

According to terms of agreement, the winner signs away their rights for 2 years and agrees to a $1,000 payment (along with the $5,000 prize). A thorough background check will also be conducted on each finalist chosen. For the complete rundown of eligibility requirements, as well as how to submit your entry, click HERE.

But if you’re in the likes of Shonda Rhimes and you’re still interested, you have don’t have much time left to submit your entry. Get to it and best of luck! Peep the short clip above as Will Smith and James Lassiter discuss the contest and ideal writers.

Shoutout to Shadow & Act for sharing the story, too.

    • no it’s not a typo. It’s $1,000.

      according to the terms:
“As part of the Agreement, the Grand Prize Winner will agree [to] a standard eighteen (18) month Rights Option on the Grand Prize Winner’s Script. The fee payable to the Grand Prize Winner for such Rights Option is $1,000. In no event shall AFE be obligated to any entrant and or winner in the Contest for any amount greater than $1,000 for the initial Rights Option as detailed in the Agreement.”

The terms & conditions for the winner are very insulting.

And that picture up top is Will’s face after the winner signs on the dotted line and leaves the room after handing them a script that they’ll develop into something worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

As a person who has worked as a writer in the industry (theater, film, kids tv) for almost fifteen years i see fine writing and fee not only insulting…i see this whole thing as a marketing ploy…a way to promote Overbrook and suck the life force out of some inexperienced writer with a great idea. $1000 is NOTHING compared to what a great idea CAN generate. It’s likely the amount each of these gentlemen paid for a spa treatment. DON’T DO IT!

Will Smith can have several seats. I’m nowhere near as rich as these people, and $1,000 isn’t even enough to support my weed habit and all the food I buy after getting baked. They need to go on with that cheap mess.
