Hip-hop idol Shawn “Jay-z” Carter ignited stirring controversy with his recent “Open Letter,” which dropped late last week on April 11. The track — produced by Swizz and Timbaland –– boasts several punchlines backdropped by sinister instrumentation, and mentions both President Obama and the White House.
On the Today show, President Obama completely detached himself from Hov’s lyrics, but did allude the rap star and his wife Beyoncé Knowles-Carter had permission to visit Cuba, through some kind of educational entity.
When asked about Jay’s “Open Letter,” Obama told NBC’s Today show:
You know, this is not something the White House was involved with. We’ve got better things to do.
