In an effort to stress the importance of arts programs in schools, First Lady Michelle Obama and Scandal actress Kerry Washington set out for a day of fun with the students of Savoy Elementary School in Washington, D.C., Friday (May 24).
After a little dance session with a classroom of kindergarteners, the First Lady took to the stage to discuss the importance of hard work and encourage the students to be the best students they can be:
You all are so blessed to have this school, but we want you to keep working and prepare yourselves for greatness. It’s not about what you know, it’s about the effort that you put in, the amount of work that you’re willing to do to get where you’re going.
Kerry Washington, who sat among the kids in the audience, adopted Savoy Elementary as part of the Turnaround Arts initiative of the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities. Its mission is to utilize the arts to improve the culture and atmosphere of low performing schools in the D.C.-metro school and boost the academic success of its students.
Savoy is one of the very few schools that was selected for the program last year. According to USA TODAY, this elementary school has already shown improvement.
