Monday evening (May 6, 2013) hosted fashion’s largest red-carpet event, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute’s annual gala, known as the Met Gala to the masses. The gala marks the opening of the PUNK: Chaos to Couture exhibition at the museum, and the theme of the night was punk to coincide with this. Gala chair Anna Wintour was hostess to a night of punk glamour, topped off by a performance by a Givenchy-clad Kanye West.
If you have been following the Gala in previous years, you would have known that Ms. Wintour banned Kanye’s girlfriend Kim Kardashian from last year’s festivities. This year however, Ms. Kardashian jumped over that loop-hole by default by being Kanye’s plus one, and also being affiliated with Givenchy’s creative director Riccardo Tisci on Kanye’s coattails. You would think by obtaining this privilege, Kim would have wowed us with her outfit choice, but sadly, she fell a bit flat.
KANYE & KIM: WORST DRESSED COUPLE
Kardashian wore a floral-printed, long-sleeve Givenchy gown, that for the current state of her pregnancy, was not flattering at all. West, also donned in Givenchy was a bit dull, to say the least. A tie of some sort or pocket square would have been a great addition to this minimalistic outfit.
WHY BEYONCE? WHY?
Beyonce in Givenchy was a bit matchy matchy. The punk inspiration is mainly seen in her wide leather belt, but that along with the boots were a bit of a disaster. Upon quick glance, it appears that the dress is slowly bursting into flames. You can do better girl!
HINTS OF LEATHER, THAT NEEDED HELP
Kerry Washington in Vera Wang was just okay. The floral print dress with mesh inserts worn along with opera-length gloves was doing the most, in a bad way.
Alicia Keys in Jason Wu could have been good if the dress were flipped. Sequins on the bottom half aren’t the most flattering for her figure.
Eve in Dominique Auxilly encapsulated too many competing ideas; the curly hair, leather and lace in the dress and oversized accessories. A miss.
Solange in a Kenzo leg-baring printed dress may have been a bit more 70′s soul diva than punk, but nonetheless, it was executed well.
Nicole Richie in Topshop channeling Storm? So chic, elegant, and edgy simultaneously.
Jennifer Lopez in Michael Kors was spectacular. The fit of the dress was perfect and the print and styling was flattering to her figure and skin tone.
FLY COUPLE OF THE EVENING
Amar’e Stoudemire in Calvin Klein & Alexis Welch in Giambattista Valli were one of the sharpest couples of the evening. Amar’e brought the punk vibe opting to wear Chucks with his suit and Alexis channelled punk-glam in her feathered gown. Unlike Kardashian, Alexis donned a gown that accentuated her growing curves during her pregnancy, not constraining them.
Victor Cruz in Lanvin gets a #heyboo for looking so sharp in his teal blazer accented ‘fit. Go ahead!
Tyson Beckford in an Alexander Nash dinner jacket was just wrong. The pink camouflage was more reminiscent of Cam’ron in the early 2000s as opposed to punk in the 1970s and 80s.
Pharrell Williams in a Lanvin gingham print suit channelled Punk-cool, with guyliner included. He’s one of the few that can pull off this look!
