Earlier this morning, New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was arrested as the result of a murder investigation. Moments ago, media announced that Hernandez has now been officially charged with the murder of Odin Lloyd.
Lloyd, 27 was a semi-pro football player for the Boston Bandits. He was discovered slain on June 17, and is said that the two had been friends during which Lloyd was dating the sister of Hernandez’s fiancee. The two football players were out together on the last night of Lloyd’s life.
The Patriots announced they released Hernandez this morning, having expressed sympathy to Lloyd’s family and friends.
Words cannot express the disappointment we feel knowing that one of our players was arrested as a result of this investigation,” the Patriots said in a statement. “We realize that law enforcement investigations into this matter are ongoing. We support their efforts and respect the process. At this time, we believe this transaction is simply the right thing to do.
Hernandez was drafted out of the University of Florida circa 2010. Last summer, the team gave him a five-year contract worth $40 million.
